Rescue cat refusing all comforts

We've had our rescue 4 months now, he's less jumpy but still quiet and taking his time with us. He comes for head bumps now and let's us stroke him. He sleeps in the floor, I've bought him a radiator bed as he loves heart, I've bought him a cave bed for night-time, I've bought him a donut bed. I'd love to see him lying in comfort and enjoying the softness but he's not interested. He loves lying in my bed when I'm there so he likes soft things. Is there any way I can encourage him to use the expensive and lovely beds I've got him? I've tried putting treats in the bed but he grabs the treat then jumps out. Dh has banned me from buying anything else for him. I'd love to see him curled up in any one of the beautiful comfy beds I've bought him. Hate seeing him on the cold hard floor every day. Any tips?

We had a shaky start but he's my shadow now. I wfh a lot and it's only me and him during the day. He sits wherever I am and accompanies me to the loo, waiting patiently outside. When the kids come home in the evening he will still come looking for me and just sit near me.

Aww, he loves you! Mine has tired of me now I wfh, I only see her if I go visit her on my her bed, or when she's hungry Grin

Ours snubbed endless cat beds. Till we got a dog and a dog bed. The dog's bed is now the cat's favourite place. While the dog lies by it on the cold floor.

@TheLongRider

You can't beat a cardboard box or a paper bag in this house!
The paper bag on a foosball table really got me.Grin

One of ours was gutted when they picked up the skip after we had some renovations. He'd grown very accustomed to sleeping in a rubble bag on top of it.

tcjotm · 03/11/2021 12:44

Aww he loves you!

But beaming when you get him things probably makes them uncool. Cats are like teenagers 😂

Mine uses his bed occasionally. His favourite places are on the back of the sofa on a blanket is bought for myself, or stretched on my lap on a fluffy blanket.

We used our cat scratching post as a door stop. Only then, when they knew they would be in the way, did the cats deign to use it.

My cats are semi ferals that live in my greenhouse now. I bought them a little house that looked like it would be insulated well but the sides were squashable and they like to jump on the roof, squash it and sleep on the crushed results...

When Dcat got elderly and rheumatic I bought him a lovely donut bed and set it beside the radiator. He refused to even look at it let along lie in it. Your 'mistake' (not a mistake imo) is to let him sleep with you. He has a bed. Yours. (DCat currently on the bed purring his head off while holding down my arm with both paws in case I give MN more attention than him.)

AlbertBridge · 03/11/2021 15:09

My (rescue) cat's very favourite place to sleep is a folded-out piece of Amazon packaging. The type books come in. She LOVES that.

AlpineSue · 03/11/2021 15:11

Those photos you have seen of cats sleeping in lovely cosy cat beds are photoshopped adverts….

Mabelface · 03/11/2021 15:18

@AlpineSue see my photo above 😉

RockinHorseShit · 03/11/2021 15:45

You're new to this aren't you 😂

Every cat owner knows that cats prefer a cardboard box to any toys or fancy beds, we gave up trying years agin

dot91 · 03/11/2021 16:33

My girl ignored all beds except this one as it reflects her body heat back to her . She loves it .

My cat refuses to use her cat bed. She sleeps on the window ledge so I bought her a nice, soft cat window ledge mat to sleep on. She just knocks it onto the floor so she can sleep on the cold, hard window ledge instead.

DontKeepTheFaith · 03/11/2021 21:35

I’m a new cat owner. Our newly adopted 4 year old ragdoll has 2 beds + a heat mat + a scratching tree with a Perch on top and she will sleep on the hard floor next to her bed and will deliberately step around the heat mat🤣🤣

The other place she likes to sleep is her cardboard scratching mat🤣 After a good old scratch!

I bought the heat mat after she discovered the joy of lying on my laptop keyboard whilst I was trying to work. It’s clearly not the same and is off no interest to our girl….

I’m learning very quickly that cats are a law unto themselves😍

Our cat is so utterly adorable though, she can do what she wishes frankly🤷‍♀️

This is my last cat, who never quite got the hang of the cat bed

I've had quite a few cats over the past 41 years and bought various types of beds. Not one was ever used by any of the cats.

My old boy (17) likes to sleep on my bed, the rug, or a cushion

Colin manages to make a comfy bed look anything but.

Result!! I bought this with my last cat food order from Bitiba as it was half price, so worth a shot, plus they are cute. They run around like little bugs. My two cats have played with them all day, best reaction to a new toy from any cats ever ... winning at cat slavery 😂

& as for beds... we gave up 😂

Try a laptop, a homework book, a school blazer or a piece of junk mail posted on to the hall floor, all highly successful cat beds.
Or a sink.

AliceAldridge · 03/11/2021 23:14

My (outdoor) rescue cat would only sleep on top of the outdoor wooden cat house we got him.

However, now he sleeps in a large vegetable box with a fleece in it, in a cold dark utility room with a cat flap. He loves it.

Our short lived cat igloos are in the garage.

FatAnkles · 03/11/2021 23:23

Places my cat sleeps:

Under the bed
On my bed
On the windowsill with the best sunshine
On the back of the sofa
On the chair in the lounge
At the top of the wardrobe
At the bottom of the wardrobe (inside, if she's sneaky!)
In any discarded Amazon cardboard box
At the top if the cat tree with the smallest platform

Where my cat will not sleep:

The very expensive cat cave I bought for her. Nope. F*ck that.
