Orphaned Kitten

Hi, does anyone have any experience with an orphaned kitten? They were found abandoned by their mum, in a friend of a friends garden. This one seems a little behind the others, and I have the time so am happy to help him. I’ve done a lot of reading and a vet has aged him at 5/6 weeks.

Does anyone have any tips? He’s so affectionate, and is bottle feeding at the moment, preparing to be weaned properly. Does anyone recommend a good wet food to make a slurry?

And how can I help him with grooming? He accidentally smooshed a bit of poo on his back legs and stinks but I don’t want to hurt him 😩

Thankyou!

@SappysCurry Frank is absolutely fine today, it was just a case of me having a panic. He’s wolfed down loads and loads of the milk the vet gave us, so I’ve got no concerns.

If I pop outside to do the bins or get something from the shed, he waits for me on his cat tower and then pounces at my dressing gown as I walk past. 😂

Lookit his little tail! He's so cute.

Ivebeeninlockdowntoolong · 14/04/2021 09:14

Thank you OP for such a lovely story and all the photos, it's really made my day. We are nursing a poorly kitten at the moment who's just had 2 operations to repair his right hip and left hock and he is caged up and resting.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/04/2021 09:15

Oh couldn't you just squeeeeeeeze and put him on a butty and eat him all up. Grin

Em8725 · 14/04/2021 10:07

Oh @Ivebeeninlockdowntoolong poor baby, this little one doesn’t seem to know how to rest today. Up half the night and springing around all over the place.

We are going to go and buy him more toys and interesting things today, to keep him stimulated and entertained.

He’s beautiful isn’t he @Awwlookatmybabyspider, I just love him 😂. I’m just trying to be more confident that I’m doing the right things for him. The lady that brought him to me said he is so much more content here than he was with the lady that fostered him. We’ve also learned that his siblings used to snuggle together to sleep but this one never joined them. At least I don’t feel so bad about him being lonely!

He looks lovely, has he climbed your curtains yet?

He looks like he might have long fur.

giletrouge · 14/04/2021 10:51

That last pic is adorable. Well all the pics are, but in the last one he's venturing forth bless him.

Aweeeeee he is so cute. My ❤️

Em8725 · 14/04/2021 11:13

@sashh He’s not yet had a chance to try, I’ve put him in a room with only roller blinds 😂😂.

I reckon he would given half the chance, he climbs my clothing with ease!

Paper bags, crumpled foil balls, table tennis balls, a nice sized kickable mouse/rat toy, cardboard boxes are all great kitten toys. The Catit Senses track with a ball is also popular in this house.

The pouncing is cute now, not so much when it's 5kg of muscles lying in wait for you.Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 14/04/2021 15:29

Especially at 3am!!

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/04/2021 15:49

I made the mistake of using hands as toys with Bengal boy, cute as a itty bitty kitten but bloody painful at 6.5kg of pure muscle & he never grew out of thinking my left arm was a kickeroo toy.

Aldi sell paper bags at the till.

Em8725 · 14/04/2021 20:18

I weighed him on my kitchen scales in a box, and he’s put on another 10g today. He’s growing very well.

He’s had loads of bottles and tried some food. We bought half the shop in toys and he’s having great fun. I’ve got a head pad mat thing coming tomorrow as I couldn’t get a hot water bottle at the shop today, so as of tomorrow night he will be sleeping downstairs where he has a bit more freedom to roam

How’s your didn’t want a cat dh?

Em8725 · 14/04/2021 20:38

@Fluffycloudland77 “didn’t want a cat DH” has spent a ridiculous amount of money on cat beds and blankets and sleeping bags and a top of the range heat mat that he won’t need for long 😂 if I go out, when I return Frank is always on his lap.

I can’t even say he’s secretly loving it, he’s just so obvious about it 😂😂😂

Cats choose their human. It won't be the one who takes to the vet, cleans up their furballs and endures being shouted at. It will be the person who never wanted a cat who gets the cuddles, the purrs and adoring looks.

Allergictoironing · 14/04/2021 21:18

I got round that problem TheLongRider - I'm their only option for cuddles Grin

sashh · 15/04/2021 06:27

so as of tomorrow night he will be sleeping downstairs where he has a bit more freedom to roam

And by the end of the week he will be back in your bed.

Cats choose their human

Mine is a complete tart, particularly with male hoomins, if one dares to sit down in my house she makes a bed out of them.

Em8725 · 15/04/2021 08:54

@sashh I know he will 😂😂😂

Upstairs he has a small but comfy box with a bed and a makeshift tiny litter tray. He fits in a Tupperware pot with room so that’s what I’ve used for litter.

He climbed the stairs last night, cue frantic searching for him 😂😂😂

Aww I love this thread, Frank is such a gorgeous little cutie!

SappysCurry · 15/04/2021 20:53

@Em8725
It’s time for picture update surely ? We all need our frankie fix ❤️❤️
You know the rules 😂

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/04/2021 22:39

I'll second that Sappys

Em8725 · 16/04/2021 10:27

@SappysCurry
@Awwlookatmybabyspider

He kept my on my toes yesterday, constantly feeding, a mix of both solids and milk. He’s put on 30g since yesterday which is amazing.

He’s climbed much further up his cat tower and is a lot more confident around us. I think he’s finally settled 😊

He’s so happy with us now, much more confident. He’s climbed much much further up the cat tree.

He’s also got greedy, and is feeding really well. He put on 30g yesterday instead of the usual 10g a day he has been doing
