@NowYouListenToMeFella yes, you can use a cashback site to claw a bit back but you need £7k cover or more.

@Supersimkin2 Best of luck schooling him out of that little habit.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 10/03/2021 18:43

Can I pick the collective brain again please. Is it worth getting pet insurance?

Absolutely. Completely.

The only alternative is to religiously pay the equivalent amount in to a savings account every month purely for vets bills.

Supersimkin2 · 10/03/2021 20:20

He's not wazzed on me again. Bless him. Is kippy now, on duvet, after the heating broke down.

We have made up for the temporary lapse in petiquette with a tin of sardines and a cuddle.

NowYouListenToMeFella · 10/03/2021 21:11

Thanks fluffy and yes. I shall do some googling tomo.

seriouslynonames · 10/03/2021 21:13

Hello, hope you don't mind me popping in to ask some advice from you lovely people.

7 month old girl kitty has been spayed today. She has a little jacket instead of a cone, like a babygro with poppers at the bottom.

She has been going crazy since she got back - which I assumed was the jacket, but with her strange behaviour I'm wondering if she could possibly have picked up fleas at the vet. I guess this is unlikely but we had forgotten to flea treat her the last time she was due ) though she and her brother have never been out yet as waiting for these ops.

Is the crazy behaviour normal with a jacket thing? Will she get used to it? The vet said she had been fine and just keep her calm and don't let her jump - some chance! She has been crazy and jumping for the last few hours!!

Pic of them both attached

I'd say it's most likely the jacket rather than fleas. When girl cat was spayed as a kitten the cone of shame lasted 24 hours before she took it off and I wasn't going to lose a limb trying to get it back on. She was very good with her stitches and left them alone.

@NowYouListenToMeFella in theory, you should be better off self insuring ie putting away what you would spend on pet insurance, if you can withstand the strain of a potential big bill in the early years. Insurance pricing is the expected cost of claims plus admin costs plus cost of capital plus profit margin. By self insuring you only pay the cost of claims.

But (and it's a big but), do listen to @Toddlerteaplease and @QueenPaw about their insurance claims to give you some idea of what to expect,

Toddlerteaplease · 10/03/2021 22:03

@NowYouListenToMeFella yes, insurance is definitely worth it. Two of my cats have run up bills of £22k!!

NowYouListenToMeFella · 10/03/2021 22:19

Have had a quick google, most here seem to offer up to €4,000 per year. I'll look more tomo and see what else is out there. Cover is around €150 which isn't bad at all.

coastergirl · 10/03/2021 22:22

Checking in! It was my 6yo's birthday today so I'm knackered and cba answering individually. Sorry. But...

Pet insurance is so worth it. Walter was hit by a car. Bertie was poisoned by anti-freeze 😭 One good outcome, one bad. But it was SO comforting to know that I could just tell the vets to do what they needed to do for my boys, and know that they were insured.

Re the jacket: my only girl cat Helix had a jacket after she was spayed. She hated it and managed to wriggle out of it. She did ok without.

QueenPaw · 10/03/2021 22:23

Ollie likes to do dramatic, preferably 1 minute after the vets close and needs out of hours
Him "looking a bit off" turned into triaditis and nearly £3000 vets bill

YesItsMeIDontCare · 10/03/2021 22:29

@seriouslynonames - can you try her with the jacket off? She may calm down and leave her stitches alone anyway. It's got to be worth a try if she's stressed.

seriouslynonames · 10/03/2021 22:40

Thanks all
@YesItsMeIDontCare I think I will try her with it off. She seemed distressed to start with, then more confused. She has finally called down, she fell asleep against the radiator mid-wash, legs akimbo. So when she wakes (as she no doubt will as I drop off to sleep) and if she's still out of sorts I'll take it off.
Maybe there is a niche for a post-op thing that actually works and is tolerated - the boy kitty got his cone off 30 seconds after getting back from his op... We tried about 4 different collars/cones, all of which he hated. Eventually gave up. But her stitches are more vulnerable than him having the snip so I wanted to be careful especially as she's such a fearless climber!
It seems they know their own minds though!

It's my first time posting here, so lovely to meet so many other cat lovers in one place . I have a beautiful black cat named Kitty (not very original I know but she came with that name). She loves yelling for food and can open the fridge door on her ownGrin

YesItsMeIDontCare · 10/03/2021 23:01

@hippychick11 - Welcome!

@YesItsMeIDontCare this is Kitty. She loves having her photo taken. I always think she looks almost royal 😃

YesItsMeIDontCare · 10/03/2021 23:46

Oh she's a beautiful girl hippychick. And some adorable little toe beans on display there too!

TheLongRider · 10/03/2021 23:51

Welcome to all newbies. Pull up a chair, the tea is in the pot and the biscuit tin is open.

Kitty looks like a pretty determined lady, I wouldn't like to get between her and the contents of the fridge!

NowYouListenToMeFella · 11/03/2021 08:20

Kitty is gorgeous hippychick.

Sounds like pet insurance is the way to go. Will organise it today.

samlh · 11/03/2021 08:31

Hi All. I just wanted to jump in and say hello. Its so nice to see so many cat people in one place :D

I have actually lost my cat this morning, usually he lies on the table watching me work first thing, but I think he's gone upstairs for a bit of peace and quiet :D

TheLongRider · 11/03/2021 10:29

If you want toe beans, I can offer some grubby ginger cat toe beans.
