My 6 year old cat has died suddenly this evening

She was six. A long haired Chantilly mix.

My son, 14, in his room. She was sat on his spare chair, he said she started choking, launched into the closed door. Fell to the ground, tongue out panting.

DH who was working in the room next door scooped her up, brought her outside, tried cpr breathing in mouth, massaging throat etc with other son.

They raced her up the vets 2 mins away. Vet took her in room but she was gone

Vet said nothing in airways.
The son who saw it us traumatised. I'm in shock. I don't know what happened. Can I talk to you on here as this game face is killing me.

I would guess heart attack. Despite what it may have looked like, quick and probably pretty painless.
I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s worse when it’s so sudden.

CodenameVillanelle · 10/11/2020 18:36

Oh god poor baby and your poor son. My son would be traumatised too. Give him big hugs and it's ok to show you're sad, he might need permission to cry too. I'm so sorry for your loss :( xxx

MiddleOfTheRoad · 10/11/2020 18:46

Thank you.
It's the not knowing, the speed.

I've lost cats to a car accident, cancer, age, but I knew the cause.

MiddleOfTheRoad · 10/11/2020 18:48

I hadn't considered a heart attack.

She was healthy generally but prone to coughing up fur balls and had caught 2 birds (again!) in the last 2 days.

It's such a shock.

Oh god I’m sorry, 6 is so young to lose them too.

WanderlustWitch · 10/11/2020 19:01

She's gorgeous OP, what a shock for you, and your son is bound to be upset. I'd second heart attack tbh, I lost a 3yo cat a couple of years ago for no apparent reason, heart attack was the only explanation as she was healthy up until that day then boom, gone.

bellinique · 10/11/2020 19:03

I'm so sorry, that must be heartbreaking Thanks

timehealsmost · 10/11/2020 19:08

I am so sorry to hear this we lost our cat back in March after a very short illness. but we never found out specifically what it was. I hate not knowing.
don't be afraid to show your feelings openly..its ok to be sad.

MiddleOfTheRoad · 10/11/2020 19:10

Thanks - she's pulling a cute face in that picture!

I have never had a cat like her. She was obsessed with DH, so affectionate. Last night we were laughing as she jumped on his lap and proceeded to lick his hand, neck etc. A lovely nature (unless you were mouse or bird)

Here she is in the garden this summer. Wind through her feather tail. Loved the great outdoors.

I am so so sot sorry to here this, could it be poisoning, I had a cat when I was child that was poisoned, choking was one if the symptoms. It sounds like she was a lovely cat.

Keyperfect · 10/11/2020 19:16

I'm so sorry Middleoftheroad. What a shock for you all. Cookie looks gorgeous, i love her tail! She had a great life with your family - she was a lucky cat.

confusedpombear · 10/11/2020 19:16

I'm so sorry for your loss. She is gorgeous. We lost our cat suddenly at 6 too. It was awful. Hugs to you all, especially your son Thanks

MiddleOfTheRoad · 10/11/2020 19:19

Thank you. Her tale could rival Basil Brush.
I guess it could be anything, she liked to wander.

My other son is 14 too (twins) and I was proud of how he tried CPR (Learned in cadets). He went with DH to vets as I consoled my other son.

So sorry for your loss OP. Cookie looks like a gorgeous cat 💐💐

DarkMintChocolate · 10/11/2020 19:22

I am sorry to hear of your loss.

MiddleOfTheRoad · 10/11/2020 19:27

There was just no time to act and I wish I could have done more.

My son told my husband as soon as he saw her, we tried everything outside and are lucky to live by the vets. It is just the speed and her young age.

My 7 year old cat had very similar symptoms and went within a few minutes. It was sudden heart failure. I miss her every day. Like your Cookie, I've never had a cat like her, she was wonderful. I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 10/11/2020 19:28

So sorry for your loss, I’m dreading the day we have to go through it with our cat too. I was thinking the other day, I see more of my cat and have a stronger bond with her than many of my own family members so I’ll be devastated when she goes, and I’m sure it is the same for you. Take care OP and take comfort in knowing that she’s no longer suffering or in any pain. Flowers

theotherfossilsister · 10/11/2020 19:32

She is so so beautiful and like our four year old cat. I'm so sorry.

leolion1 · 10/11/2020 19:33

I'm so sorry for your loss. Cookie was a beautiful babe. Sending you strength Daffodil

MargotMoon · 10/11/2020 19:34

What a beauty, I'm so sorry for your loss 💔

MiddleOfTheRoad · 10/11/2020 19:36

Thank you. She only turned six last week. I had just added a cat water fountain to my Xmas shopping as she loved drinking from the taps. I wish I'd given it to her sooner to enjoy.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 10/11/2020 19:38

Cookie -what a gorgeous girl ❤️

I am so sorry. It's very shocking for all of you.

DS (other son) & DH were brilliant to try cpr on her

DS might need some reassurance as he might feel he didn't do enough compared to the others. & obviously very traumatic for him to have seen her do that.

I hope you can get some answers, but you may not.

Of course you can keep talking to us. Tell us anything you like, about cookie or anything x.
