My beautiful cat due to have tail amputation

Hi all

After a truely shit year when you think things cannot get much worse my lovely cat Bella arrived home last night in so much pain and her tail was completely limp :(
Off we went (at midnight to the emergency vets who said that the tail had completely come away from her back and she has no feeling in it they gave lots of painkillers and she is due back to our regular vet tomorrow..
Can anyone give any positive stories of a tailless cat and also as she isn't insured 😬 a rough idea of the cost?

I'm sorry I don't know about prices but our neighbours cat had his tail amputated (neighbours from years ago) and he lived happily years after that. We used to see him rolling about in the back garden all the time! I am really sorry this has happened to her but it sounds like you are making all the very best caring decisions you can for her. We will of course do the surgery just putting off booking a holiday until we know how much it will be 😬
She is so fed up/drugged up today just hiding under the bed and isn't eating at all poor thing 😞

Poor little thing :( I hope she gets on okay at the vet tomorrow. Mine was on painkillers after a knee operation for quite a while and he used to spend ages asleep or doing very little, just needed the rest really. He's right as rain now, I'm sure they'll look after your Bella

I see a neighbour's cat and he lost his tail as a kitten. It hasn't dented his lust for life and she says he is 10.

Just observe her to make sure that she can pee and poop. Sometimes those functions are also damaged in a severe tail pull injury (but can improve). A tailless cat will be fine once she adjusts her balance.

I don't know about tails but I've a cat who had her leg and toe amputated and manages just fine 4 years on.

That’s so sad.
My mums cat lost her tail. We don’t know how, but possibly the back door blew closed on her tail.

She had it amputated and is fine. It’s totally gone now. She’s affectionate as ever and doesn’t seem to miss it. She was young when it happened.

It hasn’t ever caused further problems.

OP - please hold on! Our DCat injured his tail. He wa sin pain and his tail dragged on the ground. He couldn't move it and had no feeling in it when we touched it as its tip. Vet said it had become dislocated and should be amputated. But DH said lets wait. We waited and within a week he'd agined more moveent in it. Bit by bit it healed and it's now as upright and jaunty as it ever was. No unneccessary operation or vet's bills.

May be worth giving him a bit of time to see if it heals. I'm so glad DH refused the op on DCat's behalf.

My boy never had a tail, he's manx. He's also gorgeous. At the minute, he's a hell of a lot more straight forward than his sis (see my post below yours)

Aw fluffy he is beautiful! My best friend has a ginger Manx cat she looks like a ginger rabbit from a distance 😁

We specialise in black cats with who have had their tails amputated. Tailless girl cat had a tail injury that was horribly infected when she first entered my life ( with 5 kittens too). 6 years since her amputation. Boy cat came home one day with a degloving injury of his tail ( probably caught in a door). Both have lovely active lives they are slightly clumsy, but they climb trees and fences and both are very successful hunters. Girl cat prefer shrews and boy cat likes slow worms.

In my hands a tail amputation is going to be so where around £250, but my practice is not a 'high cost' practice.

One of my cats had his tail amputated a few months ago. He was back to his usual self after about a week.
Thankfully he was insured as the vet bill we saw came to around £600! Although hopefully yours will be less (no idea if we are at a particularly expensive vet) our bill did include x-rays as well.

Yes my last cat had her tail amputated and went on another 10 years 😁

Friends of mine have a cat who had his tail amputated. He doesn't go out as he's too anxious. But totally rules the roost and it doesn't seem to bother him.

Thank you for asking not great been back to the vets they definitely want to amputate the tail but she still hasn't peed/pooed so if she hasn't by 4pm tomorrow we need to take her back and she may need to be put to sleep 😢

If she does she's booked in for the amputation on Thursday...
