My beautiful cat due to have tail amputation

Hi all

After a truely shit year when you think things cannot get much worse my lovely cat Bella arrived home last night in so much pain and her tail was completely limp :(
Off we went (at midnight to the emergency vets who said that the tail had completely come away from her back and she has no feeling in it they gave lots of painkillers and she is due back to our regular vet tomorrow..
Can anyone give any positive stories of a tailless cat and also as she isn't insured 😬 a rough idea of the cost?

Thanks in advance 🐈

Does she use a litter tray? Could you move it very close to her so she doesn’t have far to go? She might not want to venture far from her little under bed nest.

TerfsUp · 02/07/2018 22:21

Poor baby. I hope tomorrow sees an upturn in her health, OP.

mumtav · 02/07/2018 22:22

I had this with my Cat a couple of years ago. Limp tail, lots of pain, medication didn't seem to help.
Long story short we persevered with the vets and although they did want to amputate the tail they decided to try a strong course of antibiotics that would penetrate the tail bone/cartilage as they suspected a bite from a fox or another cat had infected it. That worked thank goodness and he still has his tail. Good luck with your cat

MrsHappyAndMrCool · 02/07/2018 22:23

Our cat was a rescue cat and had a very short tail as part of it had to be amputated too, I will take a picture once I find him.

TokyoSushi · 02/07/2018 22:35

Plate of biscuits, That's a good idea, moving the litter tray nearer to her.
X for Bella.

arghhhhhhhhhhh · 02/07/2018 22:58

Thanks everyone 😘

Yes she uses a litter tray as she's not normally allowed out overnight.. and yes have moved it to next to the bed so fingers crossed for tonight she must be so uncomfortable as she has drank quite a lot today xx

One of my boys is tail-less but it doesn't stop him. He is 15 tomorrow and has spent part of this evening beating up and seeing off a strange cat in the garden. He is now curled up on the sofa snoring.

He didn't have a tail when he came to live with us, and it doesn't seem to bother him at all.

TheSpottedZebra · 03/07/2018 09:22

Hope today brings better news.

arghhhhhhhhhhh · 03/07/2018 20:35

Thanks zebra

Still no wee but been to vets again and they said her bladder doesn't feel full and she has had a poo .... whoop never been so excited to clean the litter tray 😂

She has to go back tomorrow if she's not peed seriously I have the most stubborn cat ever I swear she's holding it in on purpose 😘

Poo is good news!
May she wee copiously very soon Grin

MinaPaws · 04/07/2018 15:28

OP all those symptoms are exactly what DGinger had when he injured his tail. Not pooing or weeing, no feeling in tail but great pain at site of injury. Every single one of them healed up. We never found out if it was a fox bite or a dislocation but it all righted itself and his tail is up like a ship's mast again.

arghhhhhhhhhhh · 04/07/2018 17:41

Thanks Paws...

She has still not wee'd how long did it take yours? If you can remember?

I really don't know what to do for the best 😔 she has a gab of about an inch from where the tail has separated xx

MinaPaws · 04/07/2018 18:38

Oh, ouch. Poor thing. I can't remember. It was years ago. But about two weeks until it was all back to normal. Don't remember such a big gap though. Sad

DownAtFraggleRock · 04/07/2018 18:47

We adopted a 2 yr old cat with no tail. Not sure what happened to her, she has a little bent stump.

She's fine - her balance isn't as good as normal cats, but other than that she's perfectly happy.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 04/07/2018 18:53

I don’t know about cost. But my dear old boy came home with an injured limp tail when he was about 2 and it had to be amputated. After the operation he acted as though nothing had happened. It’s amazing how resilient cats are, he just got on with it. No balance issues etc. He lived a normal life to the grand age of 18
Hope everything goes well for you OP Flowers

Gatekeeper · 04/07/2018 18:56

I had a cat years ago that had a tail amputation. I was in my bedroom and heard cheering from outside. Looking out the window I saw a gang of teenagers taking turn to swing my lovely boy round and round by his tail Sad. By the time I ran outside they had buggered off leaving him on the ground and in pain

Cue a rush to the vet and he had his tail amputated the next day as there was no way it could be splinted etc.
He made a good recovery and had many more happy years. Mind you...I could have quite cheerfully have got a Uzi and blasted the fuckers responsible into the next world!

LanguidLobster · 04/07/2018 18:58

Gatekeeper oh god I would have wanted to deck them too. Glad he recovered from it well

arghhhhhhhhhhh · 04/07/2018 20:18

Oh Gatekeeper that's horrific 😢 just read that to my girlfriend (who I call doctor Doolittle) and she proper cried!!

MrsCatE · 04/07/2018 22:51

Best wishes again OP. Flowers

Don't want to hijack thread but feel physically sick at Gatekeeper's story. Horrible people out there.

mountwashmore · 04/07/2018 23:11

One of our cats had a limp tail. We were away so it was our amazing cat sitter who spotted it. She took her to the vets and it turned out to be an abscess from a bite (maybe cat or fox) that was pressing on the spine at their tail base. A week after the antibiotic shot it slowly rose again and is fine now.

mountwashmore · 04/07/2018 23:12

And Gatekeeper, that is a horrific story. Your poor cat and what a horrible thing to witness.

arghhhhhhhhhhh · 05/07/2018 20:11

She's been back in today had X-ray and she has broke part of her back too she's going in tomorrow to be put to sleep absolutely heartbroken xx
