Hi all

After a truely shit year when you think things cannot get much worse my lovely cat Bella arrived home last night in so much pain and her tail was completely limp :(
Off we went (at midnight to the emergency vets who said that the tail had completely come away from her back and she has no feeling in it they gave lots of painkillers and she is due back to our regular vet tomorrow..
Can anyone give any positive stories of a tailless cat and also as she isn't insured 😬 a rough idea of the cost?

Thanks in advance 🐈

So sorry Flowers

Oh I'm so sorry. Thanks Did the vet give any idea how it might have happened? For instance a vet once told me that if they are hit by a car they very often put their claws out which then get damaged so certain accidents have other signs as well as the major injury. Outcome still the same though. Very sad for you.x

It is shit Sad

We’ve had 2 cats die on us this year. First time I didn’t let my 8 year old see anything an just told him, it didn’t go very well as it was so unexpected it took a while for him to really believe it.
Second time I let him see the body for himself. Might be a bit controversial but he took the news so much better that time as it was confirmed in his mind.
Also holding a mini funeral helped him to say goodbye.

I’m really sorry for your loss Flowers

I've broken bad news to many a person (nursing), and it's best to build up to the news with a few sentences, so that they know whats coming before the actual news. I had to do this last year to a DCat.

I'm afraid we have some bad news
We took DCat for an Xray
Unfortunately she'd hurt her back badly and we talked with the vet
The vet said she wouldn't get any better.
We decided the best thing was to give her a special injection that made her sleepy and then slowed her breathing and heart down.

Always differentiate to a child that euthanasia and 'putting to sleep' are different things. Sometimes children don't get the nuance, and think that going to sleep can = death. You don;t want a worried child at her bedtime.

We're also a bit 'woo' in a pagan way and they made a card for DCat which we burned to send it to wherever cats go to let her know how loved and missed she was/is. Any kind of little family celebration to honour your beautiful cat would do.

So sorry it was such bad news. Your poor DCat. It's very upsetting. I agree that some sort of memorial is really important. A shrub or garden ornament in DCat's memory. I love the idea of writing letters and burning them to smoke into the sky to send messages to wherever the cat has gone. As a child I would have found that very comforting.

Flowers I am so sorry
rupertpenryswife · 06/07/2018 16:38

I'm so sorry to hear about your beautiful Bella, it's heartbreaking. Some good advice on here re telling your DC, it's really tough because as a parent you protect your DC from everything, I guess it is best to just be honest so he understands what has happened to dcat and that she won't becoming back.

I hope it goes as well as it can.

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 06/07/2018 16:46

Think poster ImAGoofyGoober has given you good advice. Flowers

Gatekeeper · 10/07/2018 18:23

I'm so sorry Arggh Sad

I love the idea of writing letters and burning them so the smoke drifts skywards...perhaps you can get some sparklers and write Bella's name in the air...'we love you Bella...goodnight sweet little cat'
