Why would a cat change its behaviour (mines being affectionate!)

Not that I'm complaining. But this is weird!!

He's hanging around me a lot. If he does wander off he comes back meows at me from the door (I'm sitting in the kitchen reading) runs over to me an jumps on the chair next to me an bunts me lots. He's just sat on my lap too. He is most certainly NOT a lap cat. Last time he did that he was about 6months. (That was just over a year ago)

I was do taken aback I took a photo!!

But seriously why would be be acting like this. I feel bemused and discombobulated.

Maybe that's his plan. 🙀😸

Could you be pregnant? (Assuming you are a woman, of course). One of my cats was ultra affectionate when I was pregnant.

SheilaTakeABow · 15/01/2016 16:54

I was going to say that too - my grumpy unaffectionate beast got very snuggly when I was pregnant - I always say he pretty much knew before we did...

Shit!

I'm going to pretend I didn't post and go back to not having this thought in my head.

Haha! You know you need to do a test now, don't you :)

WildeWoman · 15/01/2016 17:02

Oooooo - shameless placemarking!

WildeWoman · 15/01/2016 17:03

Possibly the funniest way to ever find out you are pregnant.

Moln · 15/01/2016 17:03

Yes.

Very freaked out.

You wicked people. Wink it's too early as well so I'm going to have to wait.

Either you're pregnant, or he wants something, or he's murdered a relative of yours and isn't going to own up but still feels a bit guilty.

I can just see MNHQ's discombobulation ;) at the request to move the thread about a cat, in 'The litter tray', to 'Pregnancy.

Was going to say pregnant too just from the thread title. We had a cat that would go mad when I was pregnant. She would rub herself all over me be super clingy and just generally weird.
One night I had a friend over and the cat was displaying the odd behaviour. Asked friend if she was pregnant, friend said no hardly hahaha so and had a glass of wine. Said friend did a pregnancy test a couple of days later because it was playing on her mind. Her dd3 is 7 now Grin

Well ours is acting the same and I'm definitely not pregnant. It's because it's freezing outside. He basically wants to be allowed to sleep on the bed with us. When warmer weather returns he will go back to turning up for food and then sodding off until he's hungry. The only other non jokey thing to watch is its not ill. Some cats come back when ill to get help (others disappear and die under a bush). My money is on the fact it's freezing though.

FannyFifer · 15/01/2016 17:26

My old cat knew I was pregnant before I did, I was like catnip to him. Smile

Moln · 15/01/2016 17:37

Catanddogmake6 is the only one of you I like.

Grin

Well apart from the ill bit. Especially as he drank an increased amount of water yesterday (though not today)

Actually. I might change my mind, I'll take a much feared pregnancy over him dying.

I really hoped my grumpy cat would become affectionate when I got pregnant. He didn't 😭

OP - maybe he's done something really naughty and is buttering you up. Dead mouse? Poo in your shoe?

SparklyTinselTits · 15/01/2016 18:00

My grumpy female was really affectionate when I was pregnant, she also loves my 8mo more than any other person in the house!
She had a personality transplant when my beautiful Tom cat died. When he was around, she was grumpy, never sat in the same room as us, never came on the sofa for cuddles etc. But as soon as my boy died, she changed her tune! Started cuddling up to us and purring! She actually looks for affection from us now instead of repelling it!
The vet said that if you have one dominant animal in the house, and then that dominance is suddenly removed, a submissive animal will come out of their shell. - that's definitely what happened in my house!

Moln · 15/01/2016 18:30

Well I just check my app thingie and I'm day 16. So couldn't test. I am looking at you all with narrowed eyes now as I've now time to get worried.

Affection wise he's not too bad. He'd sit on the same couch as me sometimes and might curl up next to me, but not ever sit on my lap. He bunts if you are crouching down to feed him.

This was just odd he was obviously seeking me out to bunt and sat at my feet and jumped up on my lap as I sat on the kitchen chair. This has never happened ever. He wouldn't even sit on the chair next to me. He's not been different with anyone else.

I must admit that last night I was concerned about him as he drank a lot. He'd drank 200ml by the afternoon and then drank more after that.

That's interesting Sparkly no difference in house members has been made. Only difference was one of my DSs had a friend here. Cat wouldn't usually be in when friends are here but he's been staying in a lot recently. I've put this down to the bad weather.

SoupDragon · 15/01/2016 18:34

LOLOL - I was going to ask if you were pregnant too :)

Gowgirl · 15/01/2016 18:41

Again feral cat only affecionate when pregnant better than a test!
But it could be the cold....

BertPuttocks · 15/01/2016 18:46

If the last time he did it was about a year ago, it's probably because of the cold weather at this time of year.

My cat is only affectionate if:

  • he wants food
  • he's ill
  • it's cold and he needs a warm lap to use as a heat pad.
