Where did you get your cat from?

We got ours from the cats protection several years ago and are now looking for a kitten. We found the perfect moggies before and I'm waiting to see/hear what they have at the moment but have been looking around to see what's available (lots of black kittens!). We live in the Midlands and are looking for a short hair pedigree X.

One from a breeder and one I acquired from a neighbour.

JoannaFight · 01/06/2012 18:31

We looked online on Freeads in the cats/kittens section.

issey6cats · 01/06/2012 19:29

am down to four cats now, the oldest two (bro and sis) came from my ex daughter in laws cat, the other two biscuit i adopted as a kitten and blue the half siamese as a seven month old from Haworth cat rescue where i work

SizzleSazz · 01/06/2012 19:30

Small local rescue.

reckoner · 01/06/2012 19:31

One was a kitten nobody wanted. The other was lost/abandoned and he came into our house and never left.

QOD · 01/06/2012 19:45

cats miserable controlling bastards protection league.
they were adamant i had to have 2 and I didn't want 2
took several emails to head office bit to be allowed patronizingjw to have 1

naturalbaby · 01/06/2012 20:54

that's interesting QOD..I wanted 2 and am struggling now to make sure I only get 1 as we have an older cat but can see myself coming home with 2.

I've been looking at all the moggies available nearby for £10 but not sure whether I should stick to professional breeders or a rescue centre. I'd love to get the 'perfect' cat from a breeder but it seems a shame when there are so many rescue cats waiting.

My previous two from Battersea dog's home.

My current two from a breeder.

It has been a completely different (much better) experience.

slothprincess · 01/06/2012 21:03

We went to a cat rescue place (four paws rescue in Oxfordshire) to look at their kittens with a view to rehoming 1. We completely fell in love with 2 adult cats and ended up with them instead. They are our "perfect" cats, even though they are just moggies. :)

fufflebum · 01/06/2012 21:05

All my cats have been from rescue centres, TBH I have been told by a couple of them that black male neutered cats make the best pets.

IME ours certainly is!!!

If you can live without a pedigree there are so many 'rescued' kittens needing good homes it seems a shame to go to a breeder.

CMOTDibbler · 01/06/2012 21:08

All three of our current ones came from Cats Protection - two as adults, one as a kitten. they are all lovely in their own ways

tabulahrasa · 01/06/2012 21:11

I only have one from a breeder because I had my heart set on a specific breed and couldn't find a suitable rescue one, even then it took a while to find a decent breeder who was also willing to sell a kitten to us (a lot of then weren't happy with us having a dog, or the age my DD was at the time) and its not even a rare breed I was after (Siamese).

suburbandream · 01/06/2012 21:14

small local rescue. They are mother and son and the rescue insisted they should be homed together - we were happy to have two but TBH they don't like each other much and I'm sure they would both prefer to be the only cat in the household Grin

usualsuspect · 01/06/2012 21:16

From my mums neighbour

usualsuspect · 01/06/2012 21:16

Hes a lovely black cat

seeker · 01/06/2012 21:20

We had to buy ours, because the Cats Protection League wouldn't even do a home visit because we live on a boat. Despite the fact that our pervious cat had just died at 18 of old age, (not drowning) and that we live in the middle of the country a good quarter of a mile from the nearest busy road. When pressed the woman agreed that she though it would be better for a cat to be pts than rehomed with us. Because the boat (unvisited) was an unsuitable environment.

Can you tell I'm still a bit cross 8 years later?

naturalbaby · 01/06/2012 21:29

I do want something quite specific but had this in mind last time I went to the cats protection and coincidentally found the perfect cat, so I'm not expecting that to happen again. I'm still waiting for them to get back to me so am looking to see what else is available...
I'm tempted by a black cat but we have a male so thought female would be better?

Black cats are lovely, people don't like black cats for some reason though

tabulahrasa · 01/06/2012 22:01

I don't understand why people turn cats down by colour, but I know black and white and then black are hardest to rehome in rescues :(

When I was trying to get my Siamese I couldn't have cared less what colour there was, it was the personality I wanted.

I don't think it matters a great deal what sex they are when they're neutered anyway, I have two girls and they're fine, I know other people with two boys and they're fine too.

Daisybell1 · 01/06/2012 22:22

I've just completed the search for a cat - the cats protection were pretty retentive, however the blue cross wept with delight when we said we wanted one, then screamed with joy when we said we'd take two. They're thrusting them at us tomorrow and running away sharpish before we change our minds Grin

crazynanna · 01/06/2012 22:25

I am surprised black cats' are hard to home. I bought crazykitten on preloved from a farm where 2 queens had litters' at the same time, there were loads of kittens all different colours. Our girl is a black/tortoishell, and we loved her as soon as we saw her Smile she is gorgeous though

mathanxiety · 01/06/2012 22:31

From a woman in a flat above a pub who advertised 'kittens free to good homes'. Mine was the second last picked. DD1 chose her on the basis that her colouring was close to hers (both gingers)

PissyDust · 01/06/2012 22:34

Netmums Blush

Her owner was leaving her split partner and pets were not allowed at the refugee so I offered to take her.

She is a mardy little princess but I put that down to coming from an abusive home Sad

Sparklingbunting · 01/06/2012 22:35

Cats Protection. I lost the previous cat after 3 months sadly, she was found dead. I had told the Cat's Protection she had gone missing in case she was handed in. When she was found I emailed them to tell them and they replied with condolences attaching a photo of a lovely grey cat who needed a home, Shock We have had her 2 years now. Grin

Ratbagcatbag · 01/06/2012 22:36

My terror who is currently lurking outside and refusing to come into bed, followed me home one day and despite trying to find her owners, never left again. :)
