Where did you get your cat from?

We got ours from the cats protection several years ago and are now looking for a kitten. We found the perfect moggies before and I'm waiting to see/hear what they have at the moment but have been looking around to see what's available (lots of black kittens!). We live in the Midlands and are looking for a short hair pedigree X.

We told everyone around us that we wanted to get some cats and to let us know if they were aware of anyone with litters they were looking to re-home.

A friend's aunt had just had a litter, so we asked to have a look at them, meet the Mother cat etc. They had seven kittens, and we had first refusal on which two we wanted. We picked the smallest and the largest of the litter.

My friend found her by a skip when she was a little kitten.

First was a stray who lived in the warehouse where I worked and it was unsafe for the cat to stay there.

Second came from a Pet Shop. I felt sorry for it as she was not a pretty cat and I worried she'd never find a home and get destroyed.

Next two from the CPL, and then one which was a stray kitten that hung around the holiday house we were on holiday in at the time. I checked several times with as many neighbours that I could find to make sure it was a stray. It did not like the long car journey home but soon made herself at home. The three following that from a local rescue who are all siblings.

The latest two are from the CPL as well. I currently have the 5 cats, give me a bigger house and the number of cats will increase!!

Mine came from a store manager within the company I worked for, who lived locally.

Found him in the engine of FILs car!

DH was just DB at the time and still living at home, I was staying overnight. About midnight we had just gone to bed and heard this continuous miaowing. DH got up thinking it was the elderly family cat but it wasn't. Finally tracked the sound to the car engine but couldnt get at the kitten. Que 5 people in various states of nightware (me, DH, FIL, MIL & BIL) standing around at 2am trying to get kitten out, interrupted occasionally by people going home from the pubs next door wandering in to see what was going on!

Anyway kitten came out eventually, but it was another month before he let us rub him, and he was happiest sitting in front of the chicken coop watching the hens. Took a while for him to become domesticated but now he's lying on my bed.

My current boys came from a local rescue.
Sadly, they are going back there soon due to us moving.
They are brothers, one is ginger - he is great, fun loving and affectionate. The other is a miserable grey git. He doesn't like people even looking at him, let alone touching him.
I have asked that they are rehomed together. Luckily they have a no kill policy.

Cats Protection 3 weeks ago. We tried a small local rescue but they had nothing that worked for a 2 and 3 year old in the family.

He's longhaired which we said no way to initially, but he is utterly bombproof. Most anxiety free cat I have ever met. DS crashes around and shouts and drops things and he doesn't move let alone flinch. He plays with the kids and their toys, sleeps on our bed since day one, is desperate to get outside as soon as we can let him out, likes being stroked, likes being brushed and has yet to hiss, scratch or bite despite over enthusiastic petting and playing from the kids.

He is friendly and just utterly gorgeous. Tabby with the thickest tail I've ever seen. We adore him and are so happy to have found him, he's our perfect match as he even finds tantrums interesting and lays nearby to watch them play out!

My new cat, from local cat rescue, seems just like yours Lovethesea, fluffy, tabby, not nervous at all.

Seems perfect so far, has fitted in so well with our family Grin

Didn't want a kitten because feel you can tell personality a bit better when older.

Sorted! I found a couple of grey/blue girls on Gumtree and we couldn't choose between them so got both! We went to the Cats Protection league again but they haven't got back to us yet.
We just need to name them now. They are far too cute cuddled up together.

Local rescue. Previous cats (as a child) acquired randomly from a farm while on holiday and also from neighbour who no longer wanted it.

Don't mean to be rude, but why on earth do you want a pedigree? I've never had anything but moggies and can't see any particular attraction of pedigrees. I'd always pick them based on a mix of personality and need (I'm a sucker for the sad ones that have been at a rescue for ages). Please don't buy from a breeder, please rescue an unwanted cat!

Small local rescues much better IMO than the big charities who often sound excessively demanding and stringent.

IsabelleRinging · 08/06/2012 23:08

Have never "bought" a cat. As a child one cat came from a neighbour who died, another was a stray who stayed, then as an an adult i got two kttens "free to good home", then one from RSPCA and recently 2 9 week old kittens also from RSPCA (who are adorable!).

Have to say, tried Cat's Protectin and found them utterly arrogant, they would rather put cats to sleep or keep them in the cattery than home to anywhere other than perfect! Shame for the cats.

Charl0tteBronteSaurus · 08/06/2012 23:12

our current moggy was from a small local cat rescue.
previous cat came from Battersea Dogs and Cats home, and we had to have a lengthy interview, and separate home visit, before giving quite stringent restrictions on what sort of cat we'd be permitted to have.
