I am worrying about my cat again [sad].

She just took ages to get half up to then settle down and didn't seem to know what to do with her front right paw. Then after a minute she got down off the sofa and went out of the room.

She is 16. Her kidneys are failing, she has arthritis and has hypoestesias. She is on 4 tablets a day and special food. I am taking her for an extra check up this evening as she wasn't very well at all last week and had lost weight. She looks like she might have lost more Sad.

The vet said we are not at that point yet but part of me worries we are but he doesn't want to say as he knows how potty I am about her. She did play a bit yesterday though and is eating the new food we had to buy her after refusing to eat anything else.

I would take her immediately if I honestly thought she was dying. I have had her since she as 5 weeks old and she is now 16 years 8 1/2 months and she has given me so much pleasure and support that I would not allow her to suffer. She has 2 other things wrong but neither would kill her and she is on meds which are keeping it under control.

My difficulty is her blood tests are fantastic, she is fully hydrated and she is still playing. The only issue is she doesn't want the renal food and holds out for the normal stuff and now this small amount of deposits from both ends.

Oh FAB.I have no advice as you know I'm only on the start of my puddie-cat journey but just wanted to offer support and {{hugs}} xx

TheOriginalFAB · 11/05/2011 11:42

Thank you Pinot. Haven't been brave enough to look at your thread today but I will. DH just rang and said to ring and speak to the vet but the receptionist grilled me last time I did that and I can't face her at the moment. I also have to go to them to pick up some food for FabCat but can't go until DH's shed arrives.

Thr recpetionist annoys the bejeezus out of me - she needs to be a lot more caring and empathetic imo. Deep breaths, find your strength and power through. FabCat needs you x

PinotGrigiosKittens · 11/05/2011 11:44

oop sorry for spellings!

TheOriginalFAB · 11/05/2011 11:49

"FabCat needs you" was just what I needed. I phoned, he is dealing with an emergency so I asked that he call me, She wanted to know what the problem was but I said I would rather talk to him. I don't think it was who was telling me off the other day but I wasn't in the mood to tell her. I know I will get teary when I tell the vet so don't want to have to be upset twice Blush.

You did good FAB! You did good! Keep me posted x

TheOriginalFAB · 11/05/2011 12:02

Will do. Thank you.

Vet just rang. Wasn't very happy with receptionist. He doesn't think we will be losing her any time soon and says she is doing really well Grin. He agrees with me she needs to end her life happily without any fuss and I can give her normal food for a while and see how she goes Smile.

I have a head ache now as I have been so worried about her all day and feel like crying.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 11/05/2011 16:37

Good FabCat. Poor you FAB - I know what you mean about stress. Have a good cry - get it out x

TheOriginalFAB · 11/05/2011 16:52

I have to go shopping tomorrow now and buy her some normal food Grin.

OP posts:
TheOriginalFAB · 11/05/2011 16:53

She is now eating the treated food! HmmGrin.

Hi FAB, your cat sounds so much like mine. I got my cat when I was about 19 & feel she was with me through thick & thin, had her pts last autumn & still miss her Sad. She had kidney failure too & went downhill quite quickly, although still eating (a little) until last day.

She drank loads of water, think all cats with kidney failure do, but her last few days to week she had huge amounts of very dilute wee, I saw that as sign that kidneys not working at all any more, and on last day unable to walk.

We didn't go through any treatment with her though as it was too late, she had large lump on kidneys (prob tumour). Poor old puss Sad

Hope your cat continues to puzzle you with more ups than downs Smile

PinotGrigiosKittens · 12/05/2011 10:20

I hope shes OK FAB!

TheOriginalFAB · 12/05/2011 12:11

We gave her normal food but she hasn't eaten much of it Sad. The vet said if she won't eat normal food to take her in. I can't deal with it today and while she is still playing I will wait until tomorrow and reassess. I do think she is fine otherwise I would be straight there.

OP posts:
TheOriginalFAB · 12/05/2011 18:38

She hasn't eaten much of her tea either Sad.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 12/05/2011 18:40

:( Oh FAB! Hope she eats some later on...

TheOriginalFAB · 12/05/2011 18:59

I am sure everyone must be fed up of me posting about every thing she does.

She is asleep next to me now.

Did I tell you what the vet said? How he is happy with her? I am just so worried and scared as I don't know what I will be like when she does die. I cried when the hamster had to put down fgs.

OP posts:
PinotGrigiosKittens · 12/05/2011 19:28

Not fed up at all, am living it with you. The support maybe only online, but it's genuine.

I think from now on life with FabCat is going to be a rollercoaster - some highs (like the vets words) and then some lows (not eating). But the journey is worth it, so...x

TheOriginalFAB · 12/05/2011 20:10

Oh God. She is so worth it. I have posted before but I was with someone else when we got her. His idea. We split and he said he was taking the cat. I thought no way and took reinforcements to pick her up. She has been with me ever since. When I was scared living alone in my new flat she was there. When I cried over serious and stupid stuff she was there. When I came home from work she was there on the window sill. When there was a huge spider on in my flat she was useless Grin. She means everything to me and my children are going to be heartbroken too.

FabCat was sick last night. I now realise she has been sick before when I thought it was runny poo. She has not eaten all her breakfast. Can someone please tell me what to do? She seems well in every other way except she is not eating as much as normal but then it is hard to tell as she has always been fussy. I have just been out for a stroke and she is sunning herself in the garden and enjoyed the attention.

OP posts:
PinotGrigiosKittens · 13/05/2011 08:16

Not sure what to recommend FAB, think you just have to keep her happy. You can't make her eat and if she's being sick as a part of this, I don't think it can be stopped (though hope I'm wrong). You have have to keep her comfortable and happy. {hugs}

Jux · 13/05/2011 11:01

Hi FAB, sorry you're going through this. It's devastating when this happens.

I don't want to interfere in what has been a long-running thread but I hope this will help:

We used to give a cat of mine Brand's Chicken Essence which you could get in the chemist. It was for sick kids to help build them up and was great presented on a teaspoon to a sick cat who couldn't keep food down or eat it to begin with. My cat couldn't even lap so I would smear her mouth with it and she would lick it offher muzzle, and then I'd smear on some more; only a couple of times at a time though iyswim. If you can't get Brand's (and I don't know if they even make it anymore, I'm afraid) you can make some chicken stock, strain it and use it in the same way.

The other thing I did, when she was a bit better, was cook either chicken or fish, and rice, liquidise it and put a tiny bit down - teaspoonful. Once that had gone, put another down and so on.

TheOriginalFAB · 13/05/2011 11:49

Thank you. Have just been visited by a friend whose cat was shot this week [shockAngry. This is the third cat shot in that road and all by the same man who has a gun set up in his room by all accounts. The police are coming later. i have locked FabCat in just in case. FabCat is sat on the sofa.
