I am worrying about my cat again [sad].

She just took ages to get half up to then settle down and didn't seem to know what to do with her front right paw. Then after a minute she got down off the sofa and went out of the room.

She is 16. Her kidneys are failing, she has arthritis and has hypoestesias. She is on 4 tablets a day and special food. I am taking her for an extra check up this evening as she wasn't very well at all last week and had lost weight. She looks like she might have lost more Sad.

The vet said we are not at that point yet but part of me worries we are but he doesn't want to say as he knows how potty I am about her. She did play a bit yesterday though and is eating the new food we had to buy her after refusing to eat anything else.

My gut is telling me she still has quality of life but I am worried she won't eat her food. I think she might be being cute though. She is still asleep so hasn't had her fish yet.

I hadn't even realised that she hadn't come in asking for it when I was cooking. I will let her sleep though and give it to her the second she wakes up.

Just want to say that i know how you feel. Had to have my 19 year old cat put to sleep a few months ago as she suddenly got thin and her back legs went wobbly. Vet said her kidney's were failing and that it was all down hill from there for her and that it was the right time.

Was awful but at the same time the ending was very peaceful for her and she looked like a little kitten again once she was asleep. Her face looked all young and cheeky again. We have her ashes in a little box and my 2 little daughters quite often get the box down to talk to her!

Let us know how it goes -we're all here and we understand

Initially we were told by one vet we might have 2 years with her. Another vet was noncommittal when I asked and talked about having 90 days left once the blood results drop.
A neighbour mentioned today she looked really thin but I don't know why he thinks that as he doesn't see her very much and she looks the same as before.

FabCat finally woke up. I put the dish of fish under her nose and there was an anxious few minutes before she finally picked up a piece. She has eaten some of it [sigh of relief].

She is definitely that!

I think it is pay back for bringing in 3 hairless beings, several fish and some funny hairy things that live in a hutch outside.

Just weighed FabCat. She has lost weight Sad.

Hasn't touched her breakfast so have given her some biscuits which she has eaten a few of.

I am due at the vet today or tomorrow to get food and I am in denial. Is it time to let her go?

The vet receptionist to just rang to say the vet has put together some food for her. She then told me off for weighing her and for cooking her fish to eat but I was only doing what .the vet said to do if she won't eat

That is why it is so hard. She is doing all her normal things. DH says she always looks the same in her face but then he doesn't believe she smiles and said mum once Hmm.

I am a bit hesitant as I have taken her twice before because she wasn't eating and she was fine. The vet said there was one more thing they could try with her if she doesn't eat but he didn't want to throw too much at her at once.

I have to go to work in a bit then take DD for an appointment so will talk to DH tonight about what he thinks we should do.

I feel quite upset and pissed off the receptionist has just told me off.

Thanks for talking to me .

My old cat was like this (and weighed less than 2 kg at the end). She was also senile and incontinent. I booked twice to have her put to sleep, but cancelled both times, as it didn't seem right, as she still did have some quality of life. The vet was lovely, and told me I would know when the time was right. He was correct. I came down one morning and she was lying on the kitchen floor. She couldn't lift her heard to eat or drink, and lapped water half heartedly from my fingers. Called vet and he came out that morning. I stroked her and she purred as he injected her. It was very peaceful.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 04/05/2011 12:27

Oh FAB my lovely lovely mate, just ignore the receptionist - FabCat is your cat and I trust your instincts more than following a cat-advice-by-numbers approach that she was spouting.

You need to take her to the vet I think, and until then keep her warm and content and offer her whatever food she can take.

And have a million hugs from me and Ginger and Meow xxx

PinotGrigiosKittens · 04/05/2011 12:27

I mean for a check-up, not necessarily for ... :(

TheOriginalFAB · 04/05/2011 12:39

She is curled up on the sofa and I am meant to put her in her room when I go out but I forgot am leaving her to enjoy 3 hours peace. DH is going on a cat food hunt and I am going to hope for the best that she is okay until I get home. I hope the class aren't doing anything about cats or I will be useless.

Firstly I am a little more pragmatic than other vets when it comes to these cats and I feel when they are very close to the end of their life which it honestly sounds like Fabcat is I think is more important that they eat than what they eat. My lovely old boy lived on fresh salmon and chicken for the last three weeks of his life.
I think you are in the time where whenever you made the decision it wouldn't be a bad one.
I just scrolled back and saw your query about diabetes if your cat has had blood tests or urine tests they would have picked up diabetes.
Sorry I don't have any magic answers just spoil Fabcat while you can.

TheOriginalFAB · 04/05/2011 16:01

Lizcat - I have to go out now but when you say she sounds like she is at the end of her life how much are you talking? Days, weeks, months?

I have just fed her normal food with medicinal powder and she has eaten most of it Smile.

FabCat obviously knew it was later than normal and I still wasn't home as she was laid in next door's garden when I finally got home. I went to talk to her and give her a stroke and a tickle and she definitely still has life in her yet Grin.
