I am worrying about my cat again [sad].

She just took ages to get half up to then settle down and didn't seem to know what to do with her front right paw. Then after a minute she got down off the sofa and went out of the room.

She is 16. Her kidneys are failing, she has arthritis and has hypoestesias. She is on 4 tablets a day and special food. I am taking her for an extra check up this evening as she wasn't very well at all last week and had lost weight. She looks like she might have lost more Sad.

The vet said we are not at that point yet but part of me worries we are but he doesn't want to say as he knows how potty I am about her. She did play a bit yesterday though and is eating the new food we had to buy her after refusing to eat anything else.

I think sometimes they simply get bored with them. My girl also takes glucosamine supplement for her joints and she used to 'happily' take those tabs, now they too have to be hidden in pate, pita as they're the size of Smarties. Their mercurial nature is in part why we love 'em though. Hope her mood improves!

TheOriginalFAB · 16/05/2011 16:17

She isn't impressed at her tea and has walked off without eating it.

Hi Fab, I have an old girl too, she's borderline chronic kidney disorder. Does yours have Fortekor?

TheOriginalFAB · 16/05/2011 21:34

Yes, she does but she has got very good at biting it in half and spitting it all out. How old is your cat and how long has she been ill?

She ignored her tea but ate the fish the kids didn't Hmm.

She has missed 3 meals before I gave in so she will just not eat if we give her the renal food.

My moggy is 13 years old, but not really sure - we adopted her from the RSPCA in 1999 and were told she was a year old.

We are quite forgetful with the Fortekor, but the vet said the special diet is more important.

What renal food does she have fAB? We order some stuff from the internet. Mine has a very loud miaow and drives me round the twist every time I open a tin of tuna!

TheOriginalFAB · 17/05/2011 09:51

It is KD that she is on now.

She has refused her tea. I will go and get her another flavour tomorrow but if she won't eat it I don't know what options we have Sad.

Oh I lost this thread!

Poor you FAb - please fabcat, eat something for your mamma!

TheOriginalFAB · 17/05/2011 18:46

I am going to get her some food from the vet tomorrow, fingers and paws crossed.

Is it wet food? If so, can you sprinkle something on it just to tempt her? I give mine those freeze dried Thrive treats and when any of them are being picky I crush up a treat or use the dust from the tube to sprinkle on the food. Clearly this doesn't always work... after all we are dealing with cats! Really hope she picks up for you.

TheOriginalFAB · 17/05/2011 21:58

It is wet food and she isn't meant to have anything else. It wouldn't work anyway as she has been known to leave what she likes rather than accidentally eat something she doesn't. I have just put her to bed and given her some biscuits. They are renal so hopefully she is getting some benefit.

How is she today FAB?

Is there a pattern to the meals she misses or is it completely random?

Would she eat some fish or chicken mashed up with rice?

Good luck at the vet's today.

TheOriginalFAB · 18/05/2011 11:56

What a day.

DD in tears several times.
DS1 cheeking me.
I spent 45 minutes in the vets waiting to speak to the vet which pissed off 2 receptionist and then on the way home I got speed camera flashed Blush.

FabCat will not eat chicken flavour renal food. I went to pick up the food I ordered and discovered it was chicken Hmm. Luckily they had some tuna in though it is a different brand. I have also got some biscuits for her and booked in her for a check in 2 weeks.

The vet has said not to worry about 2 of her tablets or the food as she has to eat. If she will eat normal food with powder that is fine but if she won't she has to just have normal food. She is missing meals rather than eat something she doesn't want to eat. She isn't asking to be fed either.

She actually growled at me this morning when I was trying to give her her tablets Sad. She has eaten her breakfast (normal food with powder.)

PinotGrigiosKittens · 18/05/2011 16:15

Good girl! :) Do I need to offer you Wine for you to give to me to drink tonight, Fab?

TheOriginalFAB · 18/05/2011 16:23

You definitely need to have wine tonight. I want to get drunk and laid silly but not allowed so go right ahead GrinWine.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 18/05/2011 16:33

Consider it done

mathanxiety · 18/05/2011 17:04

xxxxx to you.

My own 16 yo cat is in very good health but I know the time will come when I am in your shoes and I am dreading it.

TheOriginalFAB · 18/05/2011 17:32

It has come so quickly as well. For some weird reason I feel a bit Blush that I know my cat so well I noticed immediately that she was drinking much more than usual.

OP posts:
Jux · 18/05/2011 19:16

Hooray! FAB-cat had renal tea! Def Wine tonight

TheOriginalFAB · 18/05/2011 20:07

Jux - have my share as I am not allowed to drink.

KittieCat · 18/05/2011 21:06

Good news, good Fabcat! Still sending lots if positive kitty vibes and you should be very proud you know her so well, she's a lucky lady!

TheOriginalFAB · 19/05/2011 08:05

She has eaten her breakfast but it is normal food. We will give her renal at tea time so that she hopefully is getting some of the food she needs. The vet is quite relaxed about her eating normal stuff as her results are fine.

OP posts:
Jux · 19/05/2011 08:42

Well, that's really good news, good old FAB-cat!

FAB, I'm with Lizcat in that I think it's more important that they eat, than what they eat.

I also think little and often rather than two meals and biscuits. That's standard for most of their lives, but like old people, old cats - ime - need to go back to kitten habits. Not as far as Pinot, though! You don't have to get up 5 times a night to give her milk! I mean, just a little food 5 or 6 times a day. Is that totally impractical? I don't know your circumstances.

TheOriginalFAB · 19/05/2011 13:26

What I can do is put some biscuits down for her and not just at bed time so she always has those when she is feeling peckish. I would give anything to fall over her paws as she is getting under my feet wanting me to feed her Sad.
