Using public toilets when out alone with dog?!

I’m going on a daytrip next week on my own but taking my dog with me. The weather will be much cooler by then so one option is to leave him in car in shade while I nip to the loo, but not ideal. Do you take your dogs in to public toilets?! Or dog-friendly pub toilets?! He can be reactive to a few other dogs so I’d rather not leave him with a member of staff for example. I’ll be out all day mostly in small villages so not motoway services type facilities. I don’t fancy a she-wee either! 🤣

I’d leave in car with windows down, otherwise I tend to favour a wild wee while he sits watching me a bit confused. I have gone in a cubicle before at the beach and he was crazy excited for some reason so I don’t do that incase someone else comes in and wonders what on earth is going on!

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 08/09/2023 18:53

I always take him in with me unless I can park the car right outside and see there isn't a queue.

NonMiDispiace · 08/09/2023 19:06

Mine comes in with me, I would never tie her up outside or leave her in a car for more than a couple of minutes.

Please train your dog not to do that / keep them under control.

I get it’s not advisable to leave dogs outside but it’s not fair to let them disturb other people like that.

Who on earth is going to be unhappy at a cute doggie face popping under the door to say hello? That would be compensation alone for having to use public toilets 😝

Poshjock · 08/09/2023 19:13

I have taken them in. It was a good while ago and was the Labs. Two 45kg lumps at that so they were not getting in the cubicle. They were well trained so put in a sit outside cubicle with leads under door and hooked on my foot. Never been an issue. Never had a comment either.

Dog tax included. My lovely but dearly departed Labs.

i always take mine, i tie her up outside my cubicle, from the inside, never had any problems at all

TenOhSeven · 08/09/2023 19:20

I can't believe what I am reading. People seriously think it's acceptable to take their dogs into public loos where there might be nervous kids, people with allergies, people who just plain don't like dogs? Leave it in the car or tie it up outside. FFS. They are dogs not your children.

Willmafrockfit · 08/09/2023 19:25

do you have a dog @TenOhSeven

you absolutely cannot leave them tied up outside
and you might be a long way from the car

Willmafrockfit · 08/09/2023 19:26

it so happens there are very rarely people around when i go or they dont mind

I'd never leave my dog tied outside anywhere. It's not always possible to leave him in the car.

So better to leave a possibly stressed dog tied up outside for everyone to walk past instead? I know which one is more of a safety/welfare risk and it's not taking them into a (usually filthy) public loo...

mondaytosunday · 08/09/2023 20:06

I once took both my dogs in a cubicle with me - that was tricky!

Leonberger · 08/09/2023 20:07

I can only imagine the carnage it would cause trying to fit mine in a public toilet 😂

I always leave them in the car.

WorriedMillie · 08/09/2023 20:13

I’ve held dogs for owners using public loos (I mustn’t look like a dognapper 👀)

jmh740 · 08/09/2023 20:22

I always take mine in with me

CMOTDibbler · 08/09/2023 21:28

I take mine in with me. It's a tight squeeze as they aren't small, but if I'm no where near the car what else am I to do?

EraOfTheGrey · 08/09/2023 21:53

Always take mine in. I have the bladder the size of a grape so always on the look out for loos. My 2 dogs come with me and are used to just sitting there waiting but they are only small so fit in anywhere.

I would never leave them unattended as one of them is ridiculously friendly and will ask to go home with anyone who looked at her.

I've also had a previous dog who was left outside my corner shop and some hideous children decide to pelt him with stones. Lesson learned.

Timeforsinging81 · 08/09/2023 22:20

FFS public toilets are for people not dogs. My son really struggles with public toilets at the best of times, a dog in there would be highly distressing. Since when does the needs of a dog trump the needs of actual people needing to use the toilet. Perhaps my son should just piss up a lamp post instead.

ForeverYellow · 08/09/2023 22:32

I take my dog in the cubicle. No way would I leave her tied up alone outside or in the car .

IGotThrillsTheyreMultiplying · 09/09/2023 09:54

As ever I think it depends on the dog, depends on the toilet, depends on the situation.

I once had a tiny, toothless, gentle, quiet and well behaved terrier. He would come in with me (carried) and sit quietly while I wee.

I now have a massive, hairy, nosey, mischievous boy and he has to stay in the car. If it's too warm for that, he doesn't come or I don't wee (or I find an isolated spot on a walk to wee).

But then in either scenario I tended to be in those kind of loos that are a bit dirty and not many people in them - those that are tend to be walkers. Not like I was taking them into some clean loos in Tesco.

Some people have dog phobias or allergies. It's really not OK to bring dogs into a public toilet.

gravitytester · 09/09/2023 10:04

I take mine in. I'm not tying her up to get stolen (if I'm near the car, she'll go in there- but unfortunately I don't normally need the loo at that point!).

gravitytester · 09/09/2023 10:05

I used to find somewhere else- until one day another dog came to find mine and yeh owner followed- and found me peeing 😳 (I was behind a hedge 😅)

MidnightOnceMore · 09/09/2023 10:07

Unacceptable to take a dog into public toilets.

Too many dog owners are shameless, entitled people.

Public toilets are for people.

Clymene · 09/09/2023 10:09

Mine comes in with me if we're out on walks and I use a public toilet.
