Using public toilets when out alone with dog?!

I’m going on a daytrip next week on my own but taking my dog with me. The weather will be much cooler by then so one option is to leave him in car in shade while I nip to the loo, but not ideal. Do you take your dogs in to public toilets?! Or dog-friendly pub toilets?! He can be reactive to a few other dogs so I’d rather not leave him with a member of staff for example. I’ll be out all day mostly in small villages so not motoway services type facilities. I don’t fancy a she-wee either! 🤣

I take mine into the toilet with me! I won’t leave her in the car

As usual extremely selfish people only care about their dog. It is so horrific to know this is what owners think. They just hate people and don't care at all. Very very nasty and selfish.

Willmafrockfit · 09/09/2023 12:25

ha ha @Boomboom22
and to the poster complaining about the smell
you will find dogs do not wee in public toilets
it is people

Wow no wonder toilets smell so bad. I cannot believe people take their animals in them, someone even said they let it put its nose in other peoples cubicles. Wtf? I'd be so terrified how could I ever go to the toilet again? Really very nasty and selfish, not a surprise dog owners always put their dogs above kids and scared adults.

Why would you be terrified? They're not going to devour you. And they're not using the facilities....

I’m getting increasingly annoyed at human beings who insist on getting dogs, then insist on taking the dog EVERYWHERE because “You can’t expect me to leave the dog tied up outside!” You should have thought of that before getting the dog, frankly. If you must get a dog, you need to find ways around this which don’t involve bringing a dog into a small, confined public space that everyone else has to use. People with allergies or phobias can at least avoid restaurants and cafes that say “Dog friendly”; they can’t just not use the toilet when they are out.

All the people saying the horrid dogs shouldn't be in a public toilet . . .

I wouldn't take mine in a public toilet because public toilets are foul, and I don't wants him standing his paws in the vile fluids of disgusting humans who can't seem to use a toilet properly.

Exactly!

I would never take my dog or dogs into a public toilet.

Thankfully I never have to use one either.

The thought of a dogs paws in a public toilet floor makes me feel sick!

Willmafrockfit · 09/09/2023 12:39

those of you who think people with dogs are nasty to take them in to the public toilet
have you encountered dogs in public toilets or is this hypothetical ?

waterlego · 09/09/2023 12:50

I had no idea this was so common. I occasionally use the public loos by the beach when I’m out with the mutt and I leave him outside because it doesn’t seem right to take him in there. My mum was very afraid of dogs and I remember how anxious she used to get when they were near her. I work from the assumption that anyone and everyone I meet might be scared of dogs. Of course most people aren’t but if you start with that assumption it makes you a considerate owner IMO.

I don’t particularly like leaving him outside but I can be in and out of the loo for a wee extremely quickly. He is a rescue and a total mash up of breeds so he is not worth any money to sell on. Yes, I’m aware sometimes people steal dogs for other purposes, but it feels like a very tiny risk and one I will very occasionally take if I’m absolutely desperate for a wee.

I have also left him outside the Co-op a handful of times- I can see him from inside the shop. On one of these occasions, an older couple decided to stand with him and then told me off when I came out of the shop 😬

I really do avoid leaving him unattended but on the very odd occasion, I do. We’ve been lucky so far.

FFS public toilets are for people not dogs. My son really struggles with public toilets at the best of times, a dog in there would be highly distressing. Since when does the needs of a dog trump the needs of actual people needing to use the toilet. Perhaps my son should just piss up a lamp post instead.

Same here, my autistic son is terrified of dogs

Who on earth is going to be unhappy at a cute doggie face popping under the door to say hello? That would be compensation alone for having to use public toilets 😝

Actually my son would be very unhappy indeed and I wouldn't be keen either

TheWayofBeing · 09/09/2023 12:59

@waterlego it's not a tiny risk where I live. And not with my dog who is highly desirable. Two dogs have been stolen from my road and one man was stabbed for his dog a couple of years ago here.

waterlego · 09/09/2023 13:04

That’s awful @TheWayofBeing. I would feel stressed to have a valuable pet.
My dog is desirable only to me 😂

I just take ours in the toilet with me, the park by us has little hooks in the cubicles to pop their lead on.

Those hooks are for handbags or small bags not dog leads

Riapia · 09/09/2023 13:27

Open a front door and back door of your car and squat between them. You can talk to your dog as yo go in privacy.
( I may or may not be talking from personal experience. ) 😁

PS. Do not attempt this in a built up area.

Maraudingmarauders · 09/09/2023 13:28

I take mine in with me as she's reactive and would probably end up causing a fight if i left her anywhere. She's a 30kg hip high lurcher so I have had the odd funny look when exiting a cubicle, mostly because she exits first 😂

DisforDarkChocolate · 08/09/2023 14:18

We sometimes dog-sit a greyhound, I can't image fitting her in the average loo cubical!

But of a squish but it's possible.
I'd just take DDog in if need be. Not much downside.

Clymene · 09/09/2023 13:46

Has anyone who finds the idea of dogs in cubicles in public toilets ever seen a dog in a public toilet? Ever?

So the hook with a picture of a dog on, that said “dog parking” in the mens toilets is actually for handbags?

ApolloandDaphne · 09/09/2023 14:02

I take my lab into the loo with me. Our local park has a nice big disabled toilet which I use if it is very quiet (I'm talking early morning and literally no-one else around). Otherwise we both shoehorn ourselves into a cubicle. Loads of people in the park do this and it's never been an issue.

No I meant the ones in the women’s cubicles

ismu · 09/09/2023 14:12

I've seen a dog being washed in a public toilet sink! The attendant came and there was a row ...

Flossflower · 09/09/2023 14:14

Dogs, unless assistance dogs are not allowed in many park toilets. They are not allowed in any of the London Royal Park toilets

Using public toilets when out alone with dog?!

You’ve been to the womens cubicles at my local park?

No have you?

Simonjt · 09/09/2023 14:26

Flossflower · 09/09/2023 14:23

No have you?

No, but our neighbour has, and she advised it as a good dog park because the womens cubicles have dog hooks, so she thought it was likely the mens do too.
