Using public toilets when out alone with dog?!

Moirarosesgarden · 08/09/2023 13:14

I’m going on a daytrip next week on my own but taking my dog with me. The weather will be much cooler by then so one option is to leave him in car in shade while I nip to the loo, but not ideal. Do you take your dogs in to public toilets?! Or dog-friendly pub toilets?! He can be reactive to a few other dogs so I’d rather not leave him with a member of staff for example. I’ll be out all day mostly in small villages so not motoway services type facilities. I don’t fancy a she-wee either! 🤣

I think it's ok to take the dog into the cubicle with you.

I'd say completely unacceptable to leave the dog outside the cubicle, which is what some people seem to be doing.

JaiynDough · 09/09/2023 10:17

When I was out walking I'd take my dog in with me.

Willmafrockfit · 09/09/2023 10:23

nobody has ever minded

Topseyt123 · 09/09/2023 10:25

I always took mine in with me. I had a labrador and a cocker spaniel. Never a problem and we fitted in OK - just.

I can't believe what I am reading. People seriously think it's acceptable to take their dogs into public loos where there might be nervous kids, people with allergies, people who just plain don't like dogs? Leave it in the car or tie it up outside. FFS. They are dogs not your children.

Yes, it's perfectly acceptable. I'm not sorry I did it and would do it again if I ever have another dog. I won't leave them tied up outside to potentially be stolen (dog theft is a fast rising crime) and the car can be too hot or too far away.

Get over it.

DianeBrewster · 09/09/2023 10:33

Make sure you have a really long lead. If the cubicle is large, then in with you, if it's small then hold onto lead and keep dog on outside. Always works for me - though you might get this

I take my dog to the toilets with me. He's tiny and well-behaved, he just follows me and waits quietly.

Random789 · 09/09/2023 10:54

At a county show the other day I gave the woman at the head of the loo-queue a shock when my dog left the cubicle ahead of me. I think she thought he was on his own, exceptionally well toilet trained, and on his way to wash his paws.

MidnightOnceMore · 09/09/2023 11:01

This is so enraging.

Dog owners think other people don't mind, but it's just other people are too polite to say.

It's this kind of attitude from dog owners that makes me want to campaign for more dog bans in parks etc.

I'm quite a doggy person, we always had them as kids, but we didn't impose our dogs on others or step over the polite lines.

Too many dog owners today are simply fucking rude. This means the only answer is more bans because they can't behave decently - on trains, buses, toilets, shops.

Obviously it's a owner problem, the poor is led there by a human.

DRS1970 · 09/09/2023 11:04

I think you are fretting about nothing. Just take him in. If anyone complains I would tell them your dog is more likely to be contaminated by the toilets than they are to be contaminated by him.

A dog in a locked cubicle isn't being "imposed" on anyone.

Clymene · 09/09/2023 11:11

I've never seen anyone else in the toilet when I've taken my dog in. Apart from this thread, I've never discussed it before so no one knows I do it.

What should I do with him if I can't take him in? Confused

A dog doesn't belong in public toilets where humans of all ages are using the facilities in a confined space.

The dog is most definitely being imposed on the other users.

Dog owners are way too entitled now. I'm considering a dog myself in a few years, but no way would I be the type of oblivious owner who takes it in public toilets.

BungleandGeorge · 09/09/2023 11:14

Inside the cubicle is fine but not ok to leave them outside really, you can’t claim to be in control of the dog through a locked door whilst using the loo! I’d just leave him in the car if it’s not hot

Leave it with another person or tie it outside, like everyone used to before dogs were treated like children.

Agree with this.

Outside the cubicle is not ok.

Willmafrockfit · 09/09/2023 11:19

mostly public toilets when out with a dog, are in the woods, on the sea front, not walking in the high street

GCAcademic · 09/09/2023 11:20

All the people saying the horrid dogs shouldn't be in a public toilet . . .

I wouldn't take mine in a public toilet because public toilets are foul, and I don't wants him standing his paws in the vile fluids of disgusting humans who can't seem to use a toilet properly.

Clymene · 09/09/2023 11:24

@MidnightOnceMore I'm not treating him like a child. I'm treating him like the very valuable animal he is.

IGotThrillsTheyreMultiplying · 09/09/2023 11:24

Before dog theft became such a common crime, you mean.

Leave a dog tied up outside anywhere and be prepared to never see it again.

A dog that's in a locked cubicle with it's owner isn't bothering anyone.

Out of interest, what do you propose people do with their dogs if they're out walking alone and need the toilet?

Tbf I think people opposed to dogs in toilets are not against it from a hygiene perspective. It's more a safety concern.

Lavenderflower · 09/09/2023 11:33

Wow I did not realise this was so common - I would be annoyed if I saw a dog in the loos.

WhatWouldHopperDo · 09/09/2023 11:34

I take mine in as long as it’s not busy/queueing. He’s a little sausage so I tend to pick him up and carry him
in as I know some children/adults might be nervous of dogs and possibly wouldn’t be expecting to encounter one in a public loo.
