(10 year old) Labrador pup not well :(

I am hopefully catastrophising but very teary for some reason.

10 year old Labrador (still my puppy!) has not been well this week. Started with bilious vomiting each morning, took to the vets mid week who gave him a good check over said all seemed ok, dogs can start doing things like this as they get older, and gave him some omeprazole. He was eating, drinking, peeing all as usual.

Friday he was sick twice - the second time was a big pool of very dark brown sludge (more like poo than affected by blood I think) rather than food. Took him to out of hours vets service our vets outsource too. They checked over again, said seems ok and gave him an anti sickness jab. An expensive 20 min consult and jab (£406!) but would rather be safe than sorry.

Seemed a bit out of sorts yesterday, but still eating, drinking and peeing, no more sickness so thought just recovering himself. Gave him something to eat late last night, as vet said could help with morning bile problem if tummy not empty for too long overnight, which he ate ok - not enthusiastically, but thought that was just because he was confused getting fed at a different time.

Today, still no sickness, but he is very lethargic, noticeably wobbly walking, wouldn't touch his breakfast (never refuses food!), tail down not a single wag, won't even come for a pat, left a wet patch on the carpet from drooling. So he is back at the out of hours vets again with dh (while I wait for Tesco delivery!), they have looked over again and said abdomen, temperature, heart, lungs etc all still feel/sound good. dh texted to say they have given him another anti sickness jab and have taking bloods because dh asked for more to be checked.

Are we over reacting (and spending a fortune at the vets for no reason), he just doesn't seem right...

I am so sorry. I logged in to see how he was getting on, hoping for some good news.

I know you'll be second guessing all your decisions (I did when I lost my boy recently) but you did well by him.

ReadtheReviews · 06/07/2023 17:16

So sorry to hear it op. My boy is 11 and am living in trepidation. It's not bloody long enough, is it?

Azaeleasinbloom · 06/07/2023 17:19

So very sorry OP. It’s the worst thing losing them, after all the love you share with them 💐

Thanks for all your kind words, every one made me tear up again. The house has just felt so weird the last couple of days.

No head appearing from nowhere as soon as the fridge door opens, it is so strange coming back to an empty house, I even cried chopping up chicken for dinner last night as had to think about what to do with the bits I'd trimmed off!

Angry with myself that he might have been suffering while waiting for the hospital appointment, thinking about other signs that I should have seen, angry perhaps unfairly with the local vet - how could they not have noticed it - hospital saw it on the ultrasound, why didn't they, not to cure as it was already too late but so we knew sooner and he had less distress and we had a proper goodbye instead of him going in the hospital where his last night he would have been alone. He deserved a better, a more dignified and controlled goodbye. It is all the madness of hindsight, regret and grief I know.

His huge bed is still in living room, seems a shame to throw it - it was an expensive Orvis one, never ever told dh how much it cost! He got it for his 2nd birthday as the chewing everything and anything phase had stopped, it is 8 years old now so well used, but still a great bed..... All the dog towels have been laundered. 7kg of dog food (opened) I need to find a home for!

I haven't told our dog walker yet who has had him 3 half days a week for 8 years because she is away on holidays. She is going to be mad I didn't text her but don't think it is worth ruining her holidays, she has a lot of her own stuff going on with both her dh's health and one of her own dogs and needs a good break.

So sorry OP Flowers. Very similar situation with our lovely dog. Absolutely heartbreaking I know. Take comfort that you gave him a great life.

spiderlight · 08/07/2023 23:54

So very sorry 😢 It's just the most awful emptiness, isn't it? You gave him a wonderful life though, and you couldn't possibly have done more for him. Thinking of you.
