(10 year old) Labrador pup not well :(

I am hopefully catastrophising but very teary for some reason.

10 year old Labrador (still my puppy!) has not been well this week. Started with bilious vomiting each morning, took to the vets mid week who gave him a good check over said all seemed ok, dogs can start doing things like this as they get older, and gave him some omeprazole. He was eating, drinking, peeing all as usual.

Friday he was sick twice - the second time was a big pool of very dark brown sludge (more like poo than affected by blood I think) rather than food. Took him to out of hours vets service our vets outsource too. They checked over again, said seems ok and gave him an anti sickness jab. An expensive 20 min consult and jab (£406!) but would rather be safe than sorry.

Seemed a bit out of sorts yesterday, but still eating, drinking and peeing, no more sickness so thought just recovering himself. Gave him something to eat late last night, as vet said could help with morning bile problem if tummy not empty for too long overnight, which he ate ok - not enthusiastically, but thought that was just because he was confused getting fed at a different time.

Today, still no sickness, but he is very lethargic, noticeably wobbly walking, wouldn't touch his breakfast (never refuses food!), tail down not a single wag, won't even come for a pat, left a wet patch on the carpet from drooling. So he is back at the out of hours vets again with dh (while I wait for Tesco delivery!), they have looked over again and said abdomen, temperature, heart, lungs etc all still feel/sound good. dh texted to say they have given him another anti sickness jab and have taking bloods because dh asked for more to be checked.

Are we over reacting (and spending a fortune at the vets for no reason), he just doesn't seem right...

I'm sorry it's got so complicated. I hope you can find a way forward that you all agree on.

@Floralnomad I hear you, we had the same thoughts, and I had the same discussion with the vet - why not just try steriods without the biopsy, but the worry is it would be a stab in the dark, how long do we try for and if it doesn't seem to be working what next - try another thing for inflammation or assume cancer and PTS.

Then we thought the biopsy would give us the information we need to make the next, however hard, decision and it lets us know there was not really another choice.

It’s a hard decision to make but IME steroids usually work pretty quickly if they are going to and you could always do the biopsy in a week or two if he doesn’t pick up .

Vitaminbees · 05/07/2023 23:15

I just think from my experience of having an older dog, he wouldn’t have coped well with having to travel regularly for treatment, especially if he wasn’t feeling great to start with. But you know yours well and the tablets option might be possible.
I do know a lab who’s had successful chemo recently though and seems to have had no side effects.
Hope you get the best outcome either way

ilovesushi · 06/07/2023 08:14

Can you just try steroids and pain meds and go from there? Forget all the expensive testing. Sending you lots of love! x

Honestly , if you don't have it and no improvements , you'll wish you did , likewise if they went down suddenly .
It's hard , we love our furry family members and always want the best for them.
Again ( being kind but honest ) if no improvement or obviously still not happy , it's their way of telling you it's time to say goodbye.

Our poor pup gained his wings today and is off to join all the all pups in dog heaven. 💔

Endoscopy today found something very nasty so we let him go while still under GA a couple of hours ago.

My heart goes out to you.

ajandjjmum · 06/07/2023 16:06

My heart breaks for you all.

Our 11 year old lab had very similar symptoms that went on for a number of weeks earlier this year. After several nights of sleeping downstairs with him, DH saw him settled early one morning, and went to get some rest himself. When I came downstairs he was no longer with us. Sad

I am amazed at how upset we all were, together with various random people who we knew from dog walks etc. They truly leave their paw prints on your heart. Sending much love and sympathy to you all. How lucky were we to have them!

So sorry to hear this xxx

Nigelladamascena · 06/07/2023 16:22

I am so sorry for your loss 💐

We went through something very similar with our little dog, a few weeks ago. She had been vomiting and vet thought it was pancreatitis but test was negative. Blood screen showed elevated liver enzymes. Ultrasound scan found a possible tumour. Get then did an exploratory laparotomy and our worse fears were realised, she had an inoperable stomach tumour. We let her go under GA too.

It's one of the hardest decisions to make and I miss her every day 😪

MuttsNutts · 06/07/2023 16:24

Oh no, I am so very sorry to hear this.

You did all you possibly could, and in the end, the hardest but kindest thing. Your love for him was so obvious to anyone reading your posts and he will have felt that love every day of his life.

So sorry to hear this. I know exactly what you are going through but you did the right thing by him all the way through this. I'm shedding a tear for him, I didn't even know his name but he's been on my mind these last few days. Try to remember the good times x

StrongTea · 06/07/2023 17:00

Really sorry.

JezzJazz333 · 06/07/2023 17:02

I am so sorry to read this, I've been checking your thread all day today and when I saw the word sorry from another op, my heart just sank. You tried so very very hard for your boy. Just take one day at a time and draw comfort from your family and friends. Jezz and Jazz both 11, left us for rainbow bridge within 5 months of each other, Jezz was a golden retriever and Jazz a white German Shepherd, both had huge personalities, we are just so grateful to have so many happy memories of them both. Sending you our warmest wishes and love.
