Any tips for stopping barking? We are sat in the same room he has been out 3 times and is just barking for the hell of it!! Currently ignoring but can’t keep doing that as have neighbours

AnnieSnap · 21/08/2023 23:29

I’ve had to take the decision to give no more ‘high value’ chewy things to our dogs again. It’s great to see them all contentedly chomping away, but at some point it always kicks-off with someone wanting the one someone else has. Florapup is, at 4-months really quite big and the other two are Toy Poodles, so they have to go before one of the little blokes gets injured.

Britintheusa · 22/08/2023 01:59

@Riverlee OH no 😳😱 so sorry hope tomorrow is a better day.

Steppingintome · 22/08/2023 03:53

Please can I join? We got our 8wk old puppy two days ago, this is the second night of spaniel howling. It really sounds like she’s being tortured :(. We are crate training and nothing seems to be working so far!

Shes a lovely pup during the day, she’s 98% accurate with the puppy pads already and interacts well with everyone. The breeders been calling her by the name we chose for two weeks now and today I felt like she was actually responding to it.

its a shame on a night she turns into the howling demon from hell hahaha. Il post a pic so everyone can say aw and see what a good girl she is during the day lol

Molliepuppy · 22/08/2023 07:33

can I join? Mollie is 10 weeks and we had her for a week. She’s a cocker spaniel cross. She gets very grumpy and bitey if overtired and over stimulated. And wakes up at 5am for good. I’m really struggling with her grumpiness - I don’t even know if that’s normal! Otherwise she’s a lovely dog

Losingmymind85 · 22/08/2023 09:34

We're on day 4 of puppy and oh my god, I am so fucking tired.
Everything smells
The fucking biting
The needing to be touching ALL THE TIME
No sleep. Up every 30m-hour at night.
It's like having a newborn (without the biting) but at least with the newborn you had mat leave. I'm on a long shift today (7am-8pm) and feel like I'm wading through treacle

Oh no work with a new puppy will be rough, I think everyone should be advised to take 2 weeks A/L to help settle puppies.
I would say by 16weeka things settle, but it it is a long hard road. Ours sleeps ok now and the incessant biting has stopped but those first few weeks were a nightmare. Good luck! Wine

AnnieSnap · 22/08/2023 10:29

I have another lump out of my arm again this morning. I’m covered in bite marks and bruises. It is much better than it was, but at 18-weeks, Florapup is still a bit of a Weimaraptor 🤕😪

AnnieSnap · 22/08/2023 10:31

@Steppingintome Your pup is so beautiful. I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but crying at night is the easy bit 😲

userxx · 22/08/2023 12:08

@Steppingintome Where is your pup sleeping?

Steppingintome · 22/08/2023 13:50

She was in our room, we moved her to another room thinking maybe we are disturbing her. No she didn’t like that so she’s back in our room lol. All my kids are older and at the other side of the house so can’t hear her. Just me and DH up all night. I too am at work today, I’m a dog groomer so I’m glad I have quiet dogs in today haha. DH works from home so is keeping crate door open, giving treats if she goes in and stays in for a bit, changing puppy pads, moving things she’s found to chew etc haha

If she's in with you I'm sure she'll settle eventuallu, it must be so daunting being away from mum and siblings. I've heard a hot water bottle in the crate can help, use warm water not hot.

Gizlotsmum · 22/08/2023 15:04

Any recommendations for an indestructible dog bed? Gizlotspup has a donut need but keeps pulling the stuffing out and trying to eat it. Want something I don’t have to keep seeing every day! Also toys he can’t chew through!

Xiaoxiong · 22/08/2023 15:50

@Gizlotsmum we're using vetbed at the moment, seems nice and soft and no stuffing to enjoy removing!

Gizlotsmum · 22/08/2023 17:37

Someone else has just recommended that to me ( family member) so 2 recommendations is good enough for me. We have a couple of small pieces so will try them and see about getting a bigger piece

goldenpingu · 22/08/2023 19:35

Hi everyone. Thought I’d join this thread as I brought home my golden retriever puppy today. I’m well and truly in love. He travelled amazingly.

Haven’t thought of a name yet though lol!

Star puppy is merrily destroying a couch in that I've given up rescuing. He's still biting a lot but we're getting better at distracting him.
Lots of taking him out in the garden or for a walk and crate time as a time out.

AnnieSnap · 22/08/2023 20:24

@goldenpingu your pup is gorgeous 😍

@Gizlotsmum Vetbed is fabulous stuff. I started using it over 30 years ago when I bred Weimaraners. They have a stay dry lining, with the fury top staying dry, so perfect for mum and pups. Great for all dogs, comfortable, snuggly and practically indestructible.

Riverlee · 22/08/2023 21:44

We use noodles in his crate for RiverPup. He does sometimes chew the end but they’re not destroyed. He hasn’t got a bed as such, because he either humps it or rips it. Maybe when he’s had his op, we’ll get him a new one.

Welcome all the new pups.

@Steppingintome Thats definitely an ‘ ahh, bless’ photo.

@goldenpingu PinguPup is gorgeous. I love puppy paws. They always seem so big compared to the puppy.

We found little things helped with sleeping. We got RiverPup up and sent him outside for a last wee around 9-10pm. Also leaving music on (Smooth radio), and a low light. It took time, but he eventually slept through the night.

Keepempeeled · 23/08/2023 05:47

@Steppingintome @Losingmymind85 Hope your night was better. I feel you, we are on day 5 and Hugo sleeping in his crate all night, is making the daytime easier to deal with. We have a poo each morning in the crate though.
@goldenpingu - ahhh what a little beauty.

Steppingintome · 23/08/2023 08:01

Steppup had a much better night last night (thank god) we put her in the playpen with her bed instead of the crate and kept a lamp on. She didn’t even wee or poop in there. She woke at 5am, which was good, went into the garden and did 2 pees and a poop. Lots of praising was going on and a nice breakfast. All good

Now we’ve moved into biting everyone :(. Can’t have it all eh? Lol

Xiaoxiong · 23/08/2023 08:11

Any advice on eating? Our breeder advised us 4 small meals of 70g each over the day, softened with a bit of warm water. Apparently he would guzzle this down at hers (we are still on the food she sent home with us) but we are finding he is eating barely half before losing interest. First day or two I thought it was just settling in but he still seems to be eating less than half of what was advised.

Should I leave the food down for longer? Take it away after 10 mins? Our old girl was an adult rescue and we just left a bowl of kibble out 24/7 so she wouldn't get anxious and she self regulated.

Xiaoxiong · 23/08/2023 08:13

@goldenpingu what a gorgeous pup - he isn't from the South West by any chance is he? Wondering if our pups are litter mates, they look so similar!!

AnnieSnap · 23/08/2023 10:30

@Xiaoxiong the competition of the rest of the litter triggers them and they guzzle food down. Now he’s alone, he may need a (gradual) change of food to something extra tasty. Florapup came, having just been fed on lightly soaked dry food, I introduced moist, feeding that twice a day and a more tasty dried twice a day. Florapup loves Royal Canin puppy dried the best.

Losingmymind85 · 23/08/2023 12:55

A slightly better night. We did our crate ballet for about 15m before he just whined and drifted off. I was on the couch so he could see me so I can "close" the crate door but not really.
Slept 1030-1130. Up and a quick resettle
1130-310 and out for a pee
Then 310-610 and up for the day.
Trying to get him ok with not being in same room as us but it's early days.
He's been a bitey, barky nightmare this morning. Not sure where the barking is coming from but I loathe it
I can't wait to get to the point we can go for walks. Hopefully he"ll settle and sleep and have less bitey energy. It's relentless.
Toilet training is going well. Only one accident yesterday.
Food-wise, we're down to three meals a day on advice of breeder. (7/2/9.30). They were doing raw but I can't stomach it so we've phased that out and gradually increasing kibble with a little wet food to get him to eat.
I think the last feed isdon't
