Does anyone's dog look through window

Angelbaby101 · 27/03/2023 09:53

I've never had a dog do this before and just wandered if anyone else's dog does this. I dont allow my dogs on the sofa normally, mainly because i dont want them jumping up over people who visit, which weve had before when we did allow them on sofa and also to reduce unwanted hair on there when malting season comes and to help train this, I have a doggy cam that I can watch when I'm out to see what they do and also to make sure they aren't barking and disturbing neighbours when we nip out. Anyway we have a 9 month gsd who has been a really good pup so far, but have noticed she started to jump on sofa when I leave to look out the window. There's no barking or anything like that. At first I was asking her to get off the sofa through the cam and this worked for a while. I then noticed she started to do it again, so rather than tell her off I, watched to see what she does and she literally just sits there watching the world go by. She'll get off for a little nap then back up again to peek. Does anyones dog do this? I dont think its SA, I had a dog once who suffered terrible SA and I'm not seeing any signs of that from her. I actually don't mind her peeking through the window. It's quite sweet. My other dog has no interest in the sofa at all. It is only when we are out the younger one does it, I'm not sure if she's waiting on us to get back or just watching the world go by. She stays in one spot. Should I allow this and maybe just put a little throw where she sits? She never jumps up on there when people are here so it hasn't affected her manners with visitors. It's just really strange to watch because no other dog has done this before so I'm not sure if it is she's waiting for us, watching the world, or guarding the home maybe.

There’s nothing to watch and mine still does it, you can’t see past our garden because of a hedge and then trees... he’ll still sit there looking out.

He does watch tv quite a lot though.

ladymalfoy45 · 28/03/2023 08:21

Our neighbor's Springer does. He's lovely. And Dcat sits and silently judges from all window sills.

Bloomingcancer · 28/03/2023 08:22

our dog loves nothing better than sitting on the sofa watching out for the postman, his favourite visitor as Postie has a pocketful of dog biscuits.

what I’ve never understood is how does he know we are waiting for visitors. Ten minutes before someone is due he gets really excited and sings (whiny long but not loud barks). Tried pinpointing it to things like getting hoover out etc, plumping cushions etc but I do these at other times and he doesn’t bat an eyelid.

Schmutter · 28/03/2023 08:26

Our dog jumps onto the back on the sofa as soon as we leave, so he watch us drive off. He spends a lot of time there. I love to see that little head when I drive in! He also likes looking out of the patio doors.

ilovesushi · 28/03/2023 08:37

Most dogs do this surely? We have tall floor to ceiling windows and our doggo sits on the floor watching the world go by while we are out but also when we are in. The cats also park themselves at the upstairs windows to look out. When we go for a walk, we (dog and I) know all the windows where the other dogs look out and all the gates and fences where they sit to watch the world go by.

FiveShelties · 28/03/2023 08:42

We have a floor to ceiling window by the front door and my Sheltie loves to lie there watching the world go by. Every dog I have had has watched through a window to make sure no unwanted cats, dogs or people are approaching.

Blueberry40 · 28/03/2023 08:42

We have a GS mix and he looks out of the window all the time if he’s indoors. They are a protection dog, it’s bred into them to be on guard so they like to survey their surroundings to make sure there aren’t immediate threats. Especially when they are in their own territory as they see it as their job to guard the house. Ours does a very good job 😄

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 28/03/2023 08:45

All my dogs have watched out window, our current DDog will, given the chance, sit on my lap if I’m in her my chair.

tiggergoesbounce · 28/03/2023 08:51

Our dog absolutely loves sitting in our bay window, her blanket is there for her, and she watches the world go by (snores a lot as well). She does bark if people come on our driveway, but we are ok with that.
She loves her little speck.

Poochypaws · 28/03/2023 09:19

Mine loves it. He's a nosey wee git though. We had the dog house (with roof terrace) built by a joiner and I painted it and put on the stickers. Stairs came from Wayfair USA called "bear stairs". He also likes to sit on the roof terrace and look down at others in the room below him. He looks like royalty about to give a wave to the crowds!! He'll sleep up there sometimes with one eye open ready to bark at passing dogs/cats/people/birds/leaves (don't worry detached house so not annoying neighbours)

That is brilliant, lucky dog.

ArrrMeHearties · 28/03/2023 18:28

Ddog who is 1 and a gsd too loves a nosey at the window any opertunity he gets he's a nosy git 😂

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 28/03/2023 18:38

Even when we're at home our dog loves to sit at the windown and watch the world (and especially the cats) go by. But she also does it out of separation anxiety: when I'm home but my partner's out she spends a lot of time watching for mum's return.

tillyandmilly · 28/03/2023 18:44

Can’t see a problem with pets on sofas? Just put a throw on the settee!!

Twopoodlesarebetterthanone · 28/03/2023 20:15

Voila - double nosey

flowergirl2020 · 28/03/2023 20:20

We've got two dogs and they both do this. The first dog has terrible separation anxiety and this stopped only when we gave them free run of the front room - big bay window, main road through a busy village. They both watch the world go by - enjoying full view of people catching the bus nearby. They love it. One dog even times his little sunshine naps in the full morning sun 🤣 xx I did get a little bird feeder out there once and they loved that too but had to move it due to poo all over my car. Xx

flowergirl2020 · 28/03/2023 20:23

Should add to that that window watching isn't loneliness or SA in our dogs case as we have both worked from home for the past 5 years. One dog does spend quite a lot of time with us in the home office but the other only pops up to see us when we have food/snacks 🤣 prefers people watching. They do have episodes where they play together too tugging at toys etc. xx
Doggy cameras are really good to see their patterns and what they need

picklemewalnuts · 28/03/2023 20:48

Mine has a particular spot where he watches for us to come home, if we've been out.

Sweetly, even if we're home, he goes up to watch for DS when he's due. I know he's on the way by the tone of the yipping, followed by a thundering elephant rattling down the stairs to the front door, to be ready for greeting duties.

He's really good at time keeping. If I'm still sat happily in the lounge at 4.30, he barks at me until I go in the kitchen and clatter some pans. Then he lets me sit down again.
Apparently the routine is: 4.30, picklemum clatters pans in the kitchen; 4.45 pickledog goes on watch; 5.20-5.30 pickleson comes home from work.

fruitbrewhaha · 28/03/2023 20:51

Yeah, of course. My dog has a bed by the back door and he loves watching out the window, probably for birds and squirrels.

Angelbaby101 · 30/03/2023 09:18

I have taken any orniments out of the window ambecause one was knocked down yesterday. From what I can see on doggy cam she's more on guard than just watching because she doesn't really settle as such. Not barking or whinning just leans into the window in a stand rather than sitting to watch. She does sometimes bark at dogs when I take her for a walk so I'm hoping by allowing her to watch from the window she may see them none threatening.

Yes, my dog does. He’s. Only just realised that when someone goes from the lounge to hallway, they may then appeared outside.

I thought all dogs did this. I’ve had 3 and they’ve all sat looking out of the window, watching the world go by.

RedBonnet · 07/04/2023 19:59

I thought all dogs did this. Our springer started reactive barking at all people/cars/cats etc so we had to window film up.

Shame I can't get him some magic ear muffs that stop him hearing cars/cats/people - especially cats yowling at 3am.
