Does anyone's dog look through window

I've never had a dog do this before and just wandered if anyone else's dog does this. I dont allow my dogs on the sofa normally, mainly because i dont want them jumping up over people who visit, which weve had before when we did allow them on sofa and also to reduce unwanted hair on there when malting season comes and to help train this, I have a doggy cam that I can watch when I'm out to see what they do and also to make sure they aren't barking and disturbing neighbours when we nip out. Anyway we have a 9 month gsd who has been a really good pup so far, but have noticed she started to jump on sofa when I leave to look out the window. There's no barking or anything like that. At first I was asking her to get off the sofa through the cam and this worked for a while. I then noticed she started to do it again, so rather than tell her off I, watched to see what she does and she literally just sits there watching the world go by. She'll get off for a little nap then back up again to peek. Does anyones dog do this? I dont think its SA, I had a dog once who suffered terrible SA and I'm not seeing any signs of that from her. I actually don't mind her peeking through the window. It's quite sweet. My other dog has no interest in the sofa at all. It is only when we are out the younger one does it, I'm not sure if she's waiting on us to get back or just watching the world go by. She stays in one spot. Should I allow this and maybe just put a little throw where she sits? She never jumps up on there when people are here so it hasn't affected her manners with visitors. It's just really strange to watch because no other dog has done this before so I'm not sure if it is she's waiting for us, watching the world, or guarding the home maybe.

I feel sorry for the poor thing, he sounds very lonely and bored

Quite a stretch to assume the dog is bored and lonely, don't you think?

OP, I'm very much for picking battles when it comes to dog training. I think in your case, I would let it go and just put a throw on the sofa. She seems like a lovely girl, lucky you!

Mine doesn't, except occasionally on a train.

hiredandsqueak · 27/03/2023 16:33

Ddog has perching spots in the hall, living room and downstairs bedroom so that she can view all round the outside of the house. If she's not asleep she's looking out the window tbh. She likes to keep an eye on what is happening outside and bark if she thinks it's needed.

magicstar1 · 27/03/2023 16:33

My GSD does the same. She sits up on the couch next to me, with her head resting on the back, just looking out the window. She totally ignores the tv, so this is more interesting than the wall lol.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 27/03/2023 16:40

Oh yes, my dog spends most of his "down time" watching the world go by through our front window.

I had another dog who was such a familiar sight at the window of our house that regulars on the bus route that passed it used to wave to her.

AutumnNymph · 27/03/2023 16:45

You mean like this? That's his spot most of the time when I am working. He has to keep the neighbourhood safe after all

My ndn's 2 dogs sit on the back of the sofa in the bay window watching the world go by. I think they look really cute - although I wouldn't allow a dog on the furniture if I had one (which I don't)

waterlego · 27/03/2023 16:52

My dog likes looking out the window. He’s mainly looking for cats and foxes as far as I can tell. Or is just really nosey.

CammieKennaway · 27/03/2023 18:27

My two dogs always do this - they love watching what goes on in the street (if there were net curtains to twitch, my two would be twitching them! We nickname them "Colin and Doris the curtain botherers" - no offence to anyone called Colin and Doris btw - we named them after grandparents who incidentally weren't curtain twitchers as part of a running joke 🙃

I would assume all dogs look out the window, all the dogs I know do.

This.

it’s just what they do? Keeps them entertained.

all my dogs have done it. So do the cats for that matter.

My cat is so nosy. He's gutted there is no clapping for the NHS now as he was convinced it was for him

Oh he looks so sweet. He looks as if to say "you got me" 🤣

@bizzywiththefizzy They LOVED it so much. They're terriers, so absolute agents of chaos anyway, so this was right up their street. They got very excited when several people were dragged out in handcuffs.

We now live in a much quieter, garden flat, which only faces our back garden and the back gardens of the houses/flats opposite, and that's not nearly so much fun for them. They do quite like watching the pigeons though...

That's sounds interesting. If she grabs me for that I don't mind 🤣 there's not much action in my street other than people and dogs, so if something like that was going on, I'd love her to come and grab me 🤣

Thankyou. I've ordered her her very own throw so she can spy in comfort.

Judging by what I've seen on the doggy cam I'm surprised she doesn't get a bad neck, her head turns hear and there, ears moving forward and back. Then will shove her snout through the blinds. Now I know why there's smudges on my window.

Yep, Samoyed puppy and we have 2 long windows at the front of our house so she sits looking out ... and gets loads of people staring at her because she's just stunning 😍

Yes just like that. Another handsome doggy. I suppose of anything it would keep burglers away if we had any 🤣

... oh and our dog does this when we're in and out. So do the cats ... well 2 of the 3 cats do anyway

viques · 27/03/2023 18:47

My old cat used to make sure he was in the window when the kids walked by going to/ coming from school. If any of them stopped to look at him he was shameless! He would stand up , rub against the window, arch his back, wave his tail, the complete show off cat show. Then when the children were dragged away by their parent he would sit back down and wait for the next batch of adoring acolytes to worship him.

ilovepixie · 27/03/2023 18:51

My dog does this. She would sit and look out the window all day long.

If only they knew he was more likely to lick their face and beg for treats or a game of tug. 🤣

HuggingtheHRT · 27/03/2023 19:53

My dog spends half the day doing this. He is bravely protecting us from the tyranny of the neighbour cats and the nefarious Amazon delivery man 😂😂😂

TeenLifeMum · 27/03/2023 19:57

Mine doesn’t but we’re at the end of a quiet cul de sac so not much happens, plus dh is here most of the time. Most dogs I know do though.

Nannyfannybanny · 28/03/2023 07:55

My border collie is guarding, we live in a bungalow,so sometimes she will sit on our bed keeping watch. She knows our DDs car before it's visible. She knew my DHs when he came in from work, when it was in the next road. More people walk by with dogs than without. She keeps an eye on them all, doesn't think much of the really big ones
