Does anyone's dog look through window

Angelbaby101 · 27/03/2023 09:53

I've never had a dog do this before and just wandered if anyone else's dog does this. I dont allow my dogs on the sofa normally, mainly because i dont want them jumping up over people who visit, which weve had before when we did allow them on sofa and also to reduce unwanted hair on there when malting season comes and to help train this, I have a doggy cam that I can watch when I'm out to see what they do and also to make sure they aren't barking and disturbing neighbours when we nip out. Anyway we have a 9 month gsd who has been a really good pup so far, but have noticed she started to jump on sofa when I leave to look out the window. There's no barking or anything like that. At first I was asking her to get off the sofa through the cam and this worked for a while. I then noticed she started to do it again, so rather than tell her off I, watched to see what she does and she literally just sits there watching the world go by. She'll get off for a little nap then back up again to peek. Does anyones dog do this? I dont think its SA, I had a dog once who suffered terrible SA and I'm not seeing any signs of that from her. I actually don't mind her peeking through the window. It's quite sweet. My other dog has no interest in the sofa at all. It is only when we are out the younger one does it, I'm not sure if she's waiting on us to get back or just watching the world go by. She stays in one spot. Should I allow this and maybe just put a little throw where she sits? She never jumps up on there when people are here so it hasn't affected her manners with visitors. It's just really strange to watch because no other dog has done this before so I'm not sure if it is she's waiting for us, watching the world, or guarding the home maybe.

My older dog has always done this. If we're home or not, her favourite spot is watching what's going past the window.
My puppy has just started doing it too, but for her I can tell it's SA, only done when I'm out, and she's howling and crying at window looking for us, it's very different, and you can tell.

Aww bless. SA is absolutely heartbreaking to watch.

Our dog does that even when we're in - he likes looking out of the study window best as it looks out onto a patch of grass and he can see his friends out for a walk. It's quite high so we've put an Ikea unit with a rug on in front of it and lift him onto it. He stands beside it and looks at the window then at us when he wants to be lifted up. People wave at him now when they go by.

Nalupa · 27/03/2023 13:18

My friend's dog (gsd) has worked out that if he goes on to the sofa and looks at the mirror above the fireplace he can see out the opposite window down the road as it's reflected in the mirror. Sigh

bizzywiththefizzy · 27/03/2023 13:38

God all my dogs have done this , they are so nosy they even stood at the back door watching the birds in the garden . One dog in particular found a knot hole in the fence and would watch neighbour hanging washing out etc . It's quite funny really how nosy they are .

spiderlight · 27/03/2023 13:43

Our old springer used to lie on the very wide front windowsill, usually with the net curtains draped artfully over her head and occasionally holding a random object she'd stolen. She loved people noticing her, and we would often be stopped when we were out on walks and asked if she was 'the dog from the window'.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 27/03/2023 13:46

Yes, my dog does this intermittently and, from the next room, the parrot does it all day long. My doorbell is redundant because the parrot will clock anyone coming up the path and will call out to me, then dog will hear the parrot alert and rush towards the front door growling.

sherbertyellowteddy · 27/03/2023 13:51

My SBT does this all the time so much so I've had to move the sofa away from the window because he was ruining it (its relatively new) so now he takes himself upstairs and sits on my bed to look out 👀 I'm in, he's hardly ever alone he's just extremely nosey. Will bark at some people and not at others. 🤷🏻‍♀️

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 27/03/2023 13:54

Our dog does this all the time. She's on security, earning her keep.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 27/03/2023 13:54

All my dogs love looking out the window. One in particular can sit and gaze and blink and watch the world go by all day. Unfortunately he does bark and is very territorial but overall he just watches in a relaxed way. We use throws for the sofas and it works fine.
Please can nobody feed miss marples usual trolling posts.

Redminionpenguin · 27/03/2023 13:55

My neighbours dog does this and barks to say hello when she sees anyone pass. My neighbour asked if I'd grow my 6ft hedge higher so dog can't see out I declined (they've grown their section to 7+ft to stop dog being able to see).

Lorrymum · 27/03/2023 14:04

My dog loves looking out of the window and keeping an eye out for "intruders" She is a mini schnauzer and she sees it as her job to alert us.
Our neighbour has a little terrier who seems to spend his life on the windowsill resting on an assortment of cushions watching the world go by. I think some dogs are naturally curious.

Poshjock · 27/03/2023 14:09

My dog isn’t really interested in the world going by , but he’s not allowed in the kitchen and loves to go outside and sit on the elevated lawn and look in the kitchen window to watch me. Of course I wave and make faces at him so I’m probably just encouraging him

WomanFromTheNorth · 27/03/2023 14:13

Poor thing is lonely. Don't stop him from looking out of the window.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 27/03/2023 14:18

Ours does even when we’re in. He loves to watch children playing, birds, squirrels, rabbits, next door gardening. He has a girlfriend next door (which is actually across from us at an angle) and the look at each other through the windows. It’s very sweet. Looking out of the window does not necessarily mean a dog is bored and neglected by any means.

doodleygirl · 27/03/2023 14:18

We had a window seat built in the bay in order for our girl to watch the world go by. We lost our beautiful girl last October and so many have said they miss seeing her lovely face.

We have had our new rescue girl for 2 weeks and she also likes to sit and watch the world 😊

FizzyWineAndCrisps · 27/03/2023 14:25

My dog likes looking out of the window too, and 2 of my neighbours dogs are always looking through the window and are well known for it.

Angelbaby101 · 27/03/2023 14:53

Oh it's lovely to hear how so many dogs, cats and parrots love sitting in the window. I didn't realise they were so nosey.
I'm just hoping now summer is on the way and more people will be out doing gardens, kids playing etc that she will sit and watch nicely and not bark at every passer. Obviously it's all going to be new to her. My neighbour was mowing the lawn just now and her ears were twitching and she had a peak and a little bark. These stories have also brightend my day a little too.

My dog runs to look out the window all the time. It's very annoying when you follow them and there is nothing to see 😅

SirChenjins · 27/03/2023 15:00

ChenDog’s spot is perched on the back of the sofa in the bay window where he can watch the comings and goings of the street and bark at the neighbour’s cat/the postie/the delivery people/other dogs going by. He loves looking out of the window - it’s like the dog equivalent of Netflix.

Rebel2 · 27/03/2023 15:02

My cat is so nosy. He's gutted there is no clapping for the NHS now as he was convinced it was for him

In my old home, our front window faced right onto a busy street. One day a SWAT team came and raided the building opposite for some reason and I swear it was the best day ever for both dogs - they were absolutely transfixed. One of them actually came to get me because she was concerned I was missing out on the excitement.

OldTinHat · 27/03/2023 15:03

My old dog used to sit on the arm of the settee and to look out of the window and wait for my DC to come home from school.

My neighbours over the road have a little white dog that spends all afternoon on the back of their settee, in the window, watching the world go by.

God my dogs would have loved that , if they could speak they would have been the biggest gossips on the street . 😂

allfurcoatnoknickers · 27/03/2023 15:20

@bizzywiththefizzy They LOVED it so much. They're terriers, so absolute agents of chaos anyway, so this was right up their street. They got very excited when several people were dragged out in handcuffs.

We now live in a much quieter, garden flat, which only faces our back garden and the back gardens of the houses/flats opposite, and that's not nearly so much fun for them. They do quite like watching the pigeons though...
