Suggestions to keep the old hag warm overnight in the car

Champagneforeveryone · 26/01/2023 19:03

DH and I have a holiday planned in May, hoping to head to Scotland with DDogs.

DDogs will be sleeping in the car overnight. DDog1 (WCS) will be fine but DDog2 (StaffieXwhippet) is very thin skinned and feels the cold. She will be utterly miserable if she's not warm enough, but we are loathe to leave her at home as it's a perfect dog friendly holiday.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to the best way to keep her warm? Within reason cost isn't an issue, but her rather odd body shape means that "off the peg" jackets etc don't fit terribly well.

Whippet pyjamas! Loads on various sites. My lurcher wears them

When camping we like the ones with the legs and the ones without for walks

Clymene · 26/01/2023 19:19

Equafleece.

But do you mean you're going to stay in a house and lock your dogs outside in the car?

Timeforachangeisitnot · 26/01/2023 19:19

Hot water bottle under faux fur throw.

I say this, as moving my lab bitch from that arrangement is impossible. She hogs the bottle, just as she is the one closest to the stove, radiator, whatever.

I had one of those microwaveable puppy warmers which was nice, a hot water bottle works just as well.

Equafleece is great.

Why are they sleeping in the car?

Ilikewinter · 26/01/2023 19:26

No idea on the jacket but im intrigued as to why they are sleeping in the car!

trulyunruly01 · 26/01/2023 19:26

Are you camping? And that's why the dogs are in the car, in case they burrow out of the tent.
Otherwise it can't be that dog friendly a holiday.
I'd have a couple of practice runs at home before finalising plans - the dogs might whine/yelp/bark all night which won't be appreciated by others nearby.
But if it must be done I'd suggest a really large fleece dog bed with sides on top of a couple of hot water bottles and loads of blankets she can pull around to her satisfaction.

Champagneforeveryone · 26/01/2023 19:31

Sorry, I was watching The Crown and appear to have neglected half the details!

We are camping and will be asleep on the roof of the car, not warmly tucked up in a hotel somewhere! DDogs have a Trans-K9 lockable crate and will hopefully be so tired they will sleep like babies (so long as DDog2 is warm enough!)

Whippet clothes don't fit as she has a staffie chest. Bully clothes don't fit as she's too skinny. Regular coats / jackets are even worse.

I was thinking of constructing some sort of nest with blankets and fleece, a hot water bottle is a good shout too. If I could get PJ's to fit that would be amazing.

My ancient weim cross, who looks like a gsp, sleeps under a single duvet, as he won’t wear clothes. I tuck him in his bed every night. Would yours do this?

TheShiningPup · 26/01/2023 19:59

Second (third) equafleece, they do lots of different permutations of sizes. If you email with measurements they're very helpful (I never managed to get their online size calculator to suggest anything)

trulyunruly01 · 26/01/2023 20:04

Ooh, have you got one of those fold out camping pods, I'd love one of those.

Clymene · 26/01/2023 20:05

Oh how cute!

Honestly equafleece make coats for every dog body. My dog is very oddly shaped and his coat fits like a glove. They're not cheap but they keep dogs warm and dry, wash well and last forever (I don't work for them or get commission!)

walkinthewoodstoday · 26/01/2023 20:07

Sleeping on top of the car?! Pictures? I can't imagine this.

trulyunruly01 · 26/01/2023 20:16

I keep looking at Ventura roof tents, they have a sale on. Oh, the places I could go...

CatsForLife · 26/01/2023 20:23

Sleeping on the roof of your car is a holiday?! 😂

It's a roof top tent, I've attached a picture from the internet - I suspect DH and I will not be looking as intrepid 😆 At an absolute pinch we could have them in with us, but it wouldn't be ideal.

You still have the right to wild camp in Scotland so we will not be staying on camp sites so any noise will only disturb us (and TBF they're generally very chilled out, so after the first half an hour or so I don't see it being a problem)

I'll take a look at Equafleece. We've tried them in the past but only the standard sizes available in the local country store (and they didn't fit!)

Gratuitous photo of the old hag also attached (with her heated throw in the background, just so you know what we're working with 😉)

@Champagneforeveryone well that's different? What's the benefit of that over camping on the ground? It it because you are high up so get a view or are there other things? Going to the loo not much fun!

walkinthewoodstoday · 26/01/2023 20:28

And thanks for showing me something new! Sounds like an adventure

IwishIwasSupermum · 26/01/2023 20:31

What about a dog poncho, like a micro fibre dog bathrobe, sold to dry wet dogs but no reason why you can’t put it on a dry dog to keep it warm, check them out on Amazon, there’s all sorts in there.

Whiskeypowers · 26/01/2023 20:33

She’s a poppet! Equafleece are great
I would go hurtling out of that tent in the middle of the night with my nocturnal leg cramps 😂

good luck hope you have great fun ! You

Champagneforeveryone · 26/01/2023 20:40

walkinthewoodstoday it's set up in seconds and has a decent mattress. It means you have more time for sitting by fires, paddle boarding and playing with DDogs 😁

the toilet situation is undoubtedly a cross to bear though!

Can't you just have a furry hot water bottle ?😊
