"What a beautiful dog." (I think so too.)
"Look at those blue eyes" or similar. My favourite comment along these lines was, "Wow, he has piercing blue eyes."
"Is he a husky?" I think this is also because of his blue eyes. He isn't a husky, he's an Australian Shepherd. I also get "Is he a border collie?"

CheerfulYank · 01/05/2022 01:20

Ohhh is he a shih tzu?? (No, and she is a girl)

Awwww sweet old girl (she’s six now but has been getting that since we got her when she was a year and a half old…she isn’t old, she’s just gray. It’s her coloring! 🤣)

justgivein · 01/05/2022 05:24

Alright I may need new glasses, but I just wanted to say to the nice lady what great colouring her gold and white shih tzu had and that I had one too.She replied "actually he's a Bichon sweez and walked off sharpish.Result being I'm also a bit deaf,it was Frize, cant spell, will not be commenting on any other owner's dogs in the future after getting in a right pickle with that comment😄

Another comment I've been guilty of when we were thinking about a pug and was stressed about the cost of a new puppy.I'd stop a few owners and without fail second ,maybe third line I'd comment, "I've heard they have big vet bills".🤐

Staffy

Oh I'd never own one of them, they are agressive ..
I'm scared of Staffies

Oh wow how we'll behaved your dog is, that's amazing.
Oh I've changed my mind, what a lovely little dog I'm not scared of him, he is lovely

WestminsterCrabby · 01/05/2022 07:25

My spaniel is apparently the happiest dog in the world, according to many other dog walkers.

I also get pitying head shakes, mostly in the winter when he emerges completely encrusted in mud and tuts of 'you'll be getting the hose out then?'

ThisIsntDanicaBritannica · 03/05/2022 08:29

“Does he bite?”
”He” was a female black staffy who never so much as looked at a human wrong in her life. She worshipped my daughter especially, a true nanny dog, and if you could have explained the concept of dog aggression towards humans to her, she would have put her paws up to her mouth in horror!
People would cross the road to avoid us - she was only small but looked a bit muscley, plus the black colour gave people some odd ideas about her maybe? Weird. She was a kennel club registered staffie with a show winning lineage, maybe I should have walked her wearing a sash and tiara, it may have helped!
She passed last year, we adopted a teeny senior staffy boy, black and white, not muscley at all, and the reaction is generally very different. Lots of ‘so cute!’ as he bounces along, which makes me beam.
He’s got brilliant recall and is very good with commands on / off lead, eg, wait, let’s go, cross, come etc. We have been complimented 😊

SarahSissions · 03/05/2022 08:49

Oh he won’t stay clean for long (he’s cream), as if a black dog doesn’t get dirty!!! Errr mine might show the mud, but he doesn’t get any dirtier than any other dog 😂
nice to see a proper dog.

Neu · 03/05/2022 14:20

Ooh look a sausage dog

It's a Basset hound. Looks likes it's eaten 20 "sausage dogs" 🤣

JanetPluchinsky · 03/05/2022 14:23

I get ‘what breed is he’ despite him being a Labrador because he is really really red. People think he’s a ridgeback or similar.

and ‘oh she’s cold, she should have a coat’ to the chihuahua. No, she’s a chi. They shiver. (She does have a coat for when it’s actually cold).

ThisIsntDanicaBritannica · 03/05/2022 14:59

Minitheminx that is one adorable squidgy looking staffy! I love your bed frame and decor too, we have similar taste!

NotQuiteUsual · 03/05/2022 15:02

Oh look it's a bear.
That's not a dog it's a pony.
Bet they cost a bomb to feed.
Oh they're so fluffy and soft.

I basically hear those four statements on repeat for my Newfoundland cross.

EdithStourton · 04/05/2022 08:01

Our old boy was a big lad and we used to get comments about donkeys and ponies.

The current duo:
Nice to see dogs with good recall (you caught them at one of their better moments, mate)
Is that a springer? (when a puppy)
Are they... (A lot of people get the basic breed type right once they're adults)
My mate's dad had one that he used to work...
Do they need a lot of input? (yep, don't get one if you don't want to expend hours on training and exercise)
Ooh, they are beautiful!

spiderlight · 04/05/2022 13:00

We have an 11-year-old show cocker who has absolutelyzero interest in other people (unless they have treats) or in playing with other dogs. He steams past everyone with his nose to the ground, so we mostly get 'Oh, he's on a mission!' although we are asked fairly regularly whether he's a poodle/cockapoo. Our previous dog was a gorgeous blue merle collie/lurcher cross with one-and-a-half blue eyes, and everyone commented on his eyes. Lots of people said he looked like David Bowie. One said he looked like Vin Diesel.

whatisthisinhere · 04/05/2022 13:05

My GSD. Aww he's still a puppy isn't he? (He's 6 months, so yes). You don't need to train him so much, he's such a good boy. (He is because I constantly train him and never let him out of my sight.
He's so adorable, look at him looking up at you, look at those ears!!!
He's so aggressive, it's such an aggressive breed, his bark is loud, he's vicious.
All in the same day

justgivein · 20/05/2022 15:47

Oh so sorry our dogs they're a bit crazy but your breed there a bit...you know...what you mean nutty .Oh how she laughed.A couple of minutes after her dog, off the lead and all credit to her as she shouted after him,"he's off the lead is it alright",well I can see that, sends my dog spiralling into a fence then on to his back scared for his life because he's only four months .But mines three years old..Well that's alright then.I just don't get some people. What do you say to owners like this?

MsMarvellous · 21/05/2022 05:38

I pretty often meet people who look at our Dalmatian and say "we used to have a Dalmatian" in a knowing way.

They had one and never had another. To be fair, he is a bit barmy at times, but also so loving and sweet.

GetThatHelmetOn · 21/05/2022 05:50

I work from my living room and my dog helps me by keeping an eye on the perimeters from the window. Some times I hear people loudly saying “Oh there you are! Aren’t you cute!” or “Heelloooooo you!” Just for them to look all embarrassed and walk away quickly when they realise I am sitting just behind my dog.

GillyGumbo · 21/05/2022 06:25

I have a border terrier and mostly get "OMG his FAAAAACE!" (he is terribly cute, much as I loathe the word) and either "Now that's a proper Border" or "That's a very small Border" depending on their knowledge of the breed. I have been mildly amused by people guessing his breed completely wrong or, once, insisting that he is a cross-breed. 🤣

I like to believe that 90% of the time when they state something obvious or repetitive people are just trying to be nice or open some sort of dialogue, in their own awkward way. I've probably asked a few of the daft or misguided questions on this thread but I'm just interested. It's a dog, tell me everything!

GillyGumbo · 21/05/2022 06:33

@GetThatHelmetOn Oh God I did that recently - a sweet little Maltese (or similar) in a jumper came bolting out of a garden, tethered on a line, to bark ferociously at us for passing her territory.

I said to the dog, "It's all very well bursting out here givin' it the biggun, but you're dressed in pink."

A few more steps and I realised the owner was sitting in the porch holding the dog on a lead. 😳

My son has a staff

every bloody day he gets people backing away from him and the dog with comments like ‘stay away!that’s a dangerous dog’ or ‘stay away!he’ll bite!’

this is a dog who has been known, more than once,to go out for a wee,a blade of grass touches his Willy and mid pee comes racing back to hide behind my son

hes also shit scared of his mates cat-he went up for a friendly sniff, the (tiny) cat saw her arse about this and swiped his nose (she did miss)
he refuses to go near her now

the only thing that is dangerous about him,is his farts

we have had lovely comments about how handsome he is and how well behaved he can be (when he feels like it)

We have had the odd staffie lover stop and chat to us,thankfully these people know the breed inside out and it’s lovely to chat to them

My mum had staffs till she got too old to look after them, and she she still misses them terribly. She cannot pass a Staff and will also go over for a fuss and a cuddle. They are lovely dogs. One of hers, Buster, will forever live in my heart as the best example of a dog. He was such a gentleman!

I've only had Harry, A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, for a week, but what people have said so far is:

  • Aaaw! Isn't he gorgeous? (He is)
  • How old? (Almost six months)
  • He's very friendly! (As he wiggles in ecstasy at the delight of meeting people/other dogs)
  • Where did you get him from?
Soubriquet · 21/05/2022 07:17

same comments every time.

“They are beautiful! Can I have them? Wow. What a loud noise for
such a little dog”

Grin
steppemum · 21/05/2022 07:21

most common comment on our springer:

Oh someone's had a nice time, because we are emerging from a walk on a nature reserve with muddy feet and wet legs. (not really sure how you can walk round muddy woods and river and come out clean, but hthere you go)

Most common comment on our current dog.....

...
...

We never get close enough to comment, as he is learning not to react to other dogs <sigh>

but the other day we moved onto the grass for a bike to go by and he turned round and shouted over his shoulder 'you have a beautiful dog!'
Which was sweet. And true, he is magnificent and beautiful
