Thanks, @SirChenjins. He's fine in every other respect, as lively and energetic as ever. He would happily go for a run even in the heat (though obviously I wouldn't let him). He went swimming yesterday and had a great time. The vet checked him over quite thoroughly and couldn't find anything amiss.

He's been fine on plain chicken and rice, it's only when I try to add regular dog food that the vomiting occurs. I wonder if he could have developed an intolerance to something in the dog food? But maybe chicken isn't good for him either. I'll try some whitefish and see what happens.

Autumn101 · 19/07/2022 17:13

Poor pup, that is worrying. My mum swears by scrambled egg for tummy troubles for all our dogs. Is he happy other than the vomiting?

Yamyam13 · 19/07/2022 17:18

@certainshepherdpups have you tried some sweet potato or pumpkin?
That always sorts out yampup when she has diarrhoea..
Incidentally, i just came back from a magical 20 minutes in Sainsburys air con to find DH with the mop out clearing up Yampup's vomit. Apparently she was sock about 5 times!
She's had some yoghurt and banana today in a kong so I'm guessing it may have been that as otherwise nothing new.. and hasnt been scavenging the park offerings as usual

SirChenjins · 19/07/2022 17:20

ChenPup has been sick a couple of times over the last few days too - I wonder if it’s the heat?

I hope your pups are better soon @certainshepherdpups and @Yamyam13 🤞

TerrierOrTerror · 19/07/2022 17:31

TerrorPup (who is nearly 2, I really should leave this thread...) is doing much better than I imagined. It's not been cool enough to go out since 6am yesterday morning. She's clearly desperate to go out but she's doing ok, we're struggling even in our garden so any brain work to wear here out is inside only. Had to carry her across our patio earlier as it was SO hot on my feet.

Only issue we're having is she hasn't had a 💩 all day...

Yamyam13 · 25/07/2022 14:19

We survived the heat wave and now Yampup has Kennel Cough! Fine in herself generally but the cough is horrible and obviously its on lead pavement walks only for a few weeks...
Vet said it should just pass

tizwozliz · 25/07/2022 14:47

Fingers crossed it passes quickly. When our pup had kennel cough she only coughed badly for one night and stopped coughing completely in a couple of days.

Our pup had kennel cough a few weeks ago. She only had one bad day of coughing. Vet gave us medicine and she was grand after a day or so.

Yamyam13 · 25/07/2022 15:21

That's good to hear.. it's been about 4/5 days but only about 2 since the cough was bad enough for me to figure out what it is. Vet didnt want to see her or us bring her in i suppose as its so contagious - so they just advised us over the phone that it should be fine.
Fingers crossed

Aria20 · 25/07/2022 18:13

@Yamyam13 when mine had it and was coughing lots I put some runny honey in her water and on a spoon it seemed to soothe her hoarse coughing! We were lucky and the worst was over in about 3 days.

GuyFawkesDay · 25/07/2022 18:27

Hope poorly pups are better soon. I am braving the M6 and my better judgement and taking FawkesPup and the kids to the Lakes tomorrow. DH is working away so it's just me. First trip away for the dog for a while too so this could be..... interesting!! We've got a few 3-5mile walks outlined so hopefully we can have some fun

certainshepherdpups · 25/07/2022 19:29

My pup is still having tummy issues. I took him back to the vet today. They did x-rays which ruled out an obstruction. That was a relief but also deepened the mystery. The vet said it could be a food allergy or intolerance and that such things often appear in pups of his age (just over a year old). They gave him an anti-nausea injection and a new kind of food to try. He's lost weight in the past week. I'm worried. He's happy and energetic but something is clearly wrong and I wish I knew how to help him. Sad

Please think good thoughts for this sweet boy.

Ooh @GuyFawkesDay wave to us as you go past junction 32 👋.

hope the poorly pups feel better soon!

Billy took part in an agility demonstration yesterday with DS who is now his handler at agility as he’s much better than me. They were awesome 🥰.

Haha @LadyCatStark I'm coming off there to see family en route!

certainshepherdpups · 26/07/2022 15:45

Thank you @SirChenjins I am desperately worried about him. Sad He was somewhat subdued last night which is quite unlike him. Maybe it was a reaction to the medication. So far he hasn't vomited today but it's too early to tell whether we have turned a corner.

Lovely to see the picture of Billy at the agility demo @LadyCatStark. He looks like he's in his element.

Autumn101 · 26/07/2022 23:54

Hope the poorly pups get well soon. Mine has his third bout of kennel cough…… He’s vaccinated and so well in all other areas but it’s a real pain in the behind! I think we might need to investigate a bit more as I don’t think this is normal for a not even 8 month old pup?? We do live in an area with a lot of dogs but he’s not bothered by them on walks so rarely even sniffs let alone close contact playing

Oh yes, I seem to remember from many threads ago you have family in Lytham? That’s where the agility demo was at the weekend

SirChenjins · 27/07/2022 08:30

How's your pup today @certainshepherdpups ? Hope he and the others are feeling a bit better.

We've been making good progress with ChenPup and his recall - he's been coming back the majority of the time (lured in by the treats) and I've been playing a game with him where I get him to touch the ball or touch the rope, again for a treat. He's getting it right about 70% of the time - everyone says dogs are really intelligent, but I think he's missed that memo.

tizwozliz · 27/07/2022 10:47

Sometimes I think Ada is quite intelligent and picks things up quickly and then at other times I think she's incredibly stupid - like when she's waiting for me to throw the ball that's in her mouth!

OP posts:
certainshepherdpups · 27/07/2022 14:27

Thank you so much for asking @SirChenjins. He was having odd throat spasms that sort of freaked me out so I called the vets. They asked me to send a video so they could evaluate what might be going on. After looking at the video the vet said it was probably reflux and most likely related to his ongoing issue. They recommended feeding him a small meal and giving him another tablet of his medication. Fortunately, that seems to have resolved the spasms. He hasn't thrown up since Monday so I'm hopeful that we're starting to get a handle on things.

It sounds as though ChenPup is making excellent progress with recall. I have read that 100% recall can take up to two years to achieve.

@Autumn101 I'm sorry your pup is poorly. A third bout of kennel cough must be really worrying. I hope he feels better soon.

Nugg · 27/07/2022 15:19

Joining as my pup arrives this week. Thought long and hard and have been unable to rescue as they wont rehome with a resident, dog friendly, cat.

So here goes, its been a few years since I had a puppy... but I remember it being hard work :)
