Puppy Survival 2020 - let's talk about something other than Covid-19

I know a non-coronavirus thread will quickly disappear down the active list, but these Puppy Survival discussions have been popular in the past - God knows I could do with one now, not just because all talk tends to be limited to CV at the moment while we're all stuck indoors, but because I have so many puppy questions which aren't necessarily answered just by googling.

Any takers - has anyone else just got a new puppy and wondered what on earth they've done? Why does he pee every 3 minutes? What do you DO with a puppy all day? Am I doing everything wrong? Etc.

Here's mine, he's an 11 week old border terrier. I'll come back with more posts and questions to bump the thread at peak times, see if we can't get it going. If not, oh well - I tried! Thanks to Biteyshark for the suggestion.

I’ve been watching this thread for a while and now I can finally join Smile

Our puppy Skye arrived at the weekend. She’s nearly 9 weeks now and is settling quite well. She seems happy. She sits on command now really well. I am sleeping downstairs with her (she’s in her crate) and she whines for a wee around 4/5 so I take her outside. She then will sleep stain till around 6ish. So not too bad.

She’s a mini labradoodle.

Hi all. Me too!

Meet Barley the miniature poodle.

I have been feeling slightly overwhelmed the last day or two after having had him for 10 days ( he is 9 weeks) for all of the reasons others have mentioned above - so I'm so pleased it is not just me 🙂

Hi all! This is Archie, he is a 9 week old black lab. We've had him two days. He's getting on well with peeing and pooing outside. He's quite bitey but I know lab pups are renowned for that!

Hi all, our pup is also very bitey!! I’m getting better at distracting him from my feet which he is obsessed with!!! We got a flirt pole on amazon which we carry around with us outside and use - it’s great!

We’ve managed to get him to sleep downstairs in the hall after spending his first few weeks in his crate in our room. He will sleep there 11-4 then wants a toilet break and then will go back there till 6 then we usually let him up to our bed so we can sleep on till 8ish. Hopefully he will start sleeping through soon. He’s 14 weeks now.

He can sit well and do touch. We’re working on ‘leave it’ and need to work on his recall too.

He only poos 3-4 times a day. We have him on very good quality nuts - Canagans - mixed with some fancy semi-cooked food ( I think similar to butter box). His poos are very good consistency too. We haven’t had any accidents inside in a while - he has never pooed inside but he did pee. We’ve figured out it’s cause his cues are so subtle! He will look at you and then walk out of the room. Apparently that means let me out! We’ve started leaping up now whenever he does it!

How’s everyone getting on with socialising the pups? We’ve been harassing other dog owners on walks. Letting our pup run over to them etc.

Here’s what we got if anyone is interested! We won’t go outside without it now. Very handy if you’re going to bins or hang out washing and he’s usually running alongside us biting our feet. Plus it’s useful to tire him out - he loves trying to catch it!

Hi all, I've been reading the puppy threads for weeks in preparation for bringing our sprockerdile home. This is Chester and today is day 3 of him being home.

He is sleeping well, and eats well but he definitely has a foot fetish! Shoes, slippers and feet are all very exciting. He's really really bitey but I was braced for that, him being a sprocker. The DC are fairly wary of him still on account of his tooths but we are working on that.

Most toileting is happening outside, just a few puddles if I'm not quick enough to let him out after a drink. He's not giving us any cues yet, it's a case of spot the signs and whisk him outside but he's only 8 weeks so I'm guessing that'll come in time.

I did a bit of hand feeding yesterday which went well. Tried it again later and went not so well but he was having a mad bitey five mins so I think that was just badly timed. Will keep working on that.

Any tips for the jumpy snappy biting? And can he have carrot etc at 8 weeks?

So many gorgeous pups!

Fitz is great at toileting outside but he walks back in and wees with excitement and can't be arsed-ness! He will use the puppy pad in the night

He's lovely and like everyone we are working on mouthing and biting.
We yip if he bites us a little harder than he should and that helps

He is hilarious if he catches us sitting on the floor and burrows into our clothes or our crossed legs, we can see we will be on the riverbank while he hunts for rats 🐀

What are people doing about the spot weeing?

Just bought a 'flirt pole' thanks to you, @MissMarplesParcel I've spent an absolute fortune on this spoilt dog Blush

We're getting our miniature poodle on May 30th! Less than two weeks to go then I can join in with this thread.
