Puppy Survival 2020 - let's talk about something other than Covid-19

I know a non-coronavirus thread will quickly disappear down the active list, but these Puppy Survival discussions have been popular in the past - God knows I could do with one now, not just because all talk tends to be limited to CV at the moment while we're all stuck indoors, but because I have so many puppy questions which aren't necessarily answered just by googling.

Any takers - has anyone else just got a new puppy and wondered what on earth they've done? Why does he pee every 3 minutes? What do you DO with a puppy all day? Am I doing everything wrong? Etc.

Here's mine, he's an 11 week old border terrier. I'll come back with more posts and questions to bump the thread at peak times, see if we can't get it going. If not, oh well - I tried! Thanks to Biteyshark for the suggestion.

@midnightstar66 my vet did her microchip at the same time as her injections so you might be alright. They won't however, be doing a kennel cough vaccine.

@MortyFide it must be really frustrating for you Flowers

The breeders are farmers and horse trainers so their vets have given them the vaccinations to do themselves as they are well used to administering injections. They are still hopeful for getting the chip done though, normally she'd never ever allow a pup away without one but may make an exception for me as she knows me so well. I'm sure my vets will do it when they do the second ones though as they are going to be handling the pup anyway.

@midnightstar66 it's great they've lifted the vaccine rule, our breeder does their own microchips so we can still get that, I'd assume a vet could do it at first vaccine time under the current rules?
Haha yes a supermarket pick up/drop off seems the best way at the minute. I think the rules say the breeder has to do all drop offs, not sure how that will work for those across country.
I know its fairly minor in the grand scheme but not being allowed a blanket that smells of his mum and litter is making me feel sad for the poor pup already, might just need some extra cuddles during settling in time Smile
Though some of the posts on here are making me think twice about the decision to get a puppy Shock

We actually took Trev for his final jab last night - he had his first one (and a microchip) at 6/7 weeks with the breeder, and his second at 10 weeks when we brought him home, which was the week before lockdown began. But our vet recommended that he also have the Lepto 4 (in addition to the standard Lepto 2) which is the one which covers a couple of extra water borne diseases (I think). So he had the initial one of those at 10 weeks, and he could go out on walks, we were just advised not to let him do any river swimming and he needed a follow up, which is what he had yesterday. He's also had the kennel cough vaccine.

We just went along to the surgery, parked in the car park and called to check in - they come out and collect when they're ready, so you have a little consultation outside and they go in with the dog.

They also discovered he has an undescended testicle yesterday. Sad There's still time for it to emerge, but they felt it should probably be there by now! It's no big deal, he'll just have to have keyhole surgery when he's neutered so they can go in and find it. So it'll cost a bit more.

Bloody dog, he's got a broken tail, one bollock and an uncontrollable capacious bladder. I keep telling him I'm sending him back under warranty. Grin

@Missmelanier, don't worry, you just have to be prepared! As long as you don't set out thinking it's all going to be easy and sweet fluffy puppy house trained in a few days, you'll be fine. They're wilful, obstinate, bitey, they pee and poo wherever they like, they grab your hands, feet and clothes, they yap, they damage your stuff, they sap your sleep, they're exhausting when you can't take your eyes off them for a moment.

But that's puppies, and even though Christ knows I'm struggling at the moment, it does get better! "Puppy Blues" is a real thing, I'm having a touch of it today! Smile

Trevor is snoozing on my lap and I know he's going to be a lovely dog, even though I going to have to try and wash my duvet today and I've washed our back door mat 5 times.

He's just a bit of a dickish puppy. Wink

My last puppy (13 years ago) was a dream pup so I'm probably going to get a big shock lol

I keep comparing this one to my last puppy 13 years ago, I was convinced she was an angel as a puppy (just a horrible adult) and really easy to train.

Then I was trawling back through all my posts on a once popular dog forum - OMG I was remembering it all wrong, she was pretty awful too!

We got lucky, it was the start of a warm summer and we lived rurally in a bungalow with a huge garden (and basset hounds are generally laid back) she never chewed a thing, never actually needed toilet trained as we were outside so much it came naturally and she didn't chew a single thing. I'm not expecting the same with a terrier in a first floor city flat at all haha.

A new joiner here
My pup is only 8 weeks old but I just wanted advice on cat chasing.
We have a family cat and after losing our last 16 year old girl in January we decided to get another of the same breed.
The cat is totally fine with dogs
Or at least 16 year old ones Haha.

The cat does actually really love the new pup but he just can't stop chasing her
Or being overly rough when they play ( although she doesn't mind this weirdly)
He is a terrier so I want to try and gain control with the cat. I know terriers chase but my last two never did with the cat as they had always grown up with cats.
I'm hoping this turns out the same but I have the new puppy angst.

He is a total cutie though and we are all smitten.

Our golden retriever is 11 weeks now and is generally amazing. She’s so loving normally but is driving me potty with all of her biting of hands and feet and clothes whenever she gets excited. I know it’s a play thing and have tried the usual turning my back etc when she does it but it’s hard to do it when she’s hanging on your arm with her teeth!! I don’t remember our lab being this mouthy! Just wondered how everyone else is getting on with this and any top tips? Thank you!

This is Bella. She’s 8 weeks and we picked her up on Saturday. She’s mostly adorable, definitely has the Zoomies for about half an hour after every nap and we have to take her outside to burn off some energy. She loves to bite our toes and has definitely decided DS6 is her favourite!

Oh she’s a shih tzu x toy poodle by the way. And shit poo is definitely what I’d describe her as! She’s done 4 poos so far today, but three of them were outside at least. She doesn’t like being in her crate at night but it’s only been two nights so I’ll let her off.

Hi gang. I'm so happy this thread exists. I've read back through the old puppy support threads and was hoping someone would set up a new one!

LBee pup is a 10 week old black lab who is gorgeous but definitely testing our patient. He is super intelligent and learns commands well, he is also pretty reliable for sleeping through the night (waking once for a wee) and toileting outside. HOWEVER the nipping, biting, generally hanging off my clothes constantly is very waring. He is pretty clingy at the moment but I'm hoping he will gradually grow more confidence in being left along for short periods.

How has everyones day been with their pups?

Hi LBee2020, congrats on your new house member. Our day has been mainly good, puppy has done two poos in the house and a wee which is annoying because yesterday she didn’t do anything in the house at all!! Puppy has been nipping at the boys today too (6&18m) which they’ve not been impressed with!

Report
LBee2020 · 12/05/2020 11:10

Does anyone have tips for trying to settle puppy to go to sleep. Hes clearly tired but generally needs soothing to sleep which comes with many nipping attacks and is not sustainable!

DrKnickerbocker9 · 12/05/2020 13:19

I’ve been waiting until she’s been awake about 2 hours with lots of running in the garden then I shut her in her crate and ignore her. She usually climbs into her bed and goes to sleep!

I have an 11 week old french bulldog.

She is gorgeous and I absolutely adore her BUT....

She's so needy!!!!! If you don't give her attention she barks at you or follows you around OR heaven forbid you are busy for quite a while because then she turns loopy and naughty!!

She's a toddler. An actual toddler.

😭🤣🤣🤣

Mine is the same. I'm really trying to get him used to having some minutes to himself but he seems completely unable to occupy himself or go to sleep without my full attention. It's exhausting

Seriously how many times a day do these puppies poo?! I’m wondering if it’s her food maybe... she’s on the wainwright’s puppy food from pets at home. Anyone got any food suggestions to stop her pooing every 2/3 hours
