Does anyone have a Kokoni?

I've recently discovered that my gorgeous rescue dog is a Kokoni, an ancient Greek breed. Not common in the UK by any stretch but quite well known in Eastern Europe apparently.

I'd love to know if anyone here has one so we can exchange tails tales about this lovely and little known breed.

I have 2 Kokomo’s, rescue dogs from a shelter in Paphycos, S.Cyprus. Lena I had first, at 18 months of age, she had been abandoned in the shelter with 3 siblings at just a few weeks old. Sammy I got a bit later, when I returned to part time work and it became apparent Lena had separation anxiety and after trying everything else the vet here suggested, a furry companion for her was the final solution. Poor Sammy had lived with an English Family in Cyprus but when they were returning to the UK they decided he wasn’t coming with them ( at 8 years old) and took him to the shelter. Perfect timing for Lena and I so he came to make our little Family complete. Love them both so much. They’ve rescued me far more!

Hey there everyone,
my friend has a beautiful Kokoni dog and I really want to get one myself.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Breeder or rescue? x

wherestheweightlosspill · 22/08/2023 06:56

Hi L1ttlefoxxx, you won’t regret it, they’re wonderful dogs. They’re not bred to my knowledge, all that I know of have been rescued from Greece/Cyprus/Romania/Macedonia etc. if you join this Facebook group they share adoption posts regularly and the charities charge a few hundred pounds to vaccinate them and travel them to the uk

I'd be surprised if you could fine a Kokoni breeder. They are usually rescues from Europe so will have been neutered.

Welcome to the Kokoni club! They are such delightful dogs. Sadly my boy passed away last year at the ripe old age of 17. I still miss him so much. He was my heart dog.

I'm so sorry GinBunny, our gorgeous boy passed away last week at 16.5 yrs old and we're devastated, have spent the last week as a family sharing our photos and videos of him. He was such a special soul and leaves a big whole. They're amazing dogs

Rebelmaw · 30/01/2024 07:09

He looks very similar to my kokoni cross after his brushing! 😀

I have a kokoni from former Yugoslavia she’s a lovely gentle floof, they are excellent pets. Mine is a TDN therapy dog sharing the love. There are several Facebook pages for them eg kokoni xs in uk and kokoni rehome. She was a rescue, her sponsor told me she was a kokonut

Hi, I have just rehomed a Kokoni! He is a gorgeous male, 3 years old and has been in the UK since he was a puppy.
He seems quite timid at the moment and worried about people but hopefully it’s just because he’s settling in.
Does anyone have any tips please and also advice on level
of insurance cover?
Thanks x

@cleowasmycat he's just gorgeous. We lost our kokoni about 18 months ago at the grand old age of 16.5. They're a truly lovely breed, soft, gentle but playful and cuddly, full of personality.
Re insurance, I can't advise tbh. We gave up on insurance after a few years (we adopted him at 9 years old) and just paid as we went which proved to be far cheaper as he was a very healthy boy. Enjoy xx

hi, Thanks for the reply. He's so timid at the moment. Not really sure what else i can do to reassure him. Except time I suppose.

Will you get another?

wherestheweightlosspill · 01/04/2025 10:42

Almost definitely. My mother in law has terminal cancer and my f-i-l has dementia so will need to go into a home soon, so now is not the time, but I miss him so much and would absolutely go for a kokoni again. We hadn't heard of kokonis when we got him, just thought he was a mongrel, but once we'd discovered what he was, I joined FB groups etc. and would totally get one again .

https://www.facebook.com/ukkokoni
And several rescue ones, but you won't need those now

Cookie81 · 02/04/2025 07:07

He looks just like ours did. We still have our girl but after shaving her hair one very hot summer in the UK, her hair never grew back the same. She is still gorgeous and very fluffy. Ours is now 9 years old and we can't take her for a walk without being stopped by the public to ask what she is and how beautiful she is. Everyone thinks she is still a puppy. She was rescued from Surrey from Chimney Farm Rescue who's name changed twice and now no longer exists. Originally from Greece who was dumped on the street in a sack with 3 other puppies. Even after 9 years of having her she won't walk in crowded areas, she won't walk unless we all go and she won't walk if there is anyone behind her. lol
