The doghouse

My dog is missing, and I am sad.

That's it, really. I got home from work today and after a few minutes I noticed my dog hadn't rushed up to greet me. I looked all over the house and then the garden, checked the shedsnothing. Called hubby to make sure he hadn't taken him outhe hadn't. We've asked the neighbors, called the dog warden, called the vets and shelters, searched everywhere and put up posters. Apparently someone saw a lone dog walking down the road near our local shop while we were out searching, but they hadn't seen the posters yet and didn't pick him up. This will be the first night he hasn't been with us since we brought him home as a puppy, and I'm worried sick.

Thanks Happy. We've hit the dog wardens in both counties and I'm now going to go for the breed rescues as well. Then I'll start notifying the vets a bit further afield, in case someone has picked him up in a car.

Nothing yet. We've started searching further afield and ringing vets in all of the neighboring towns, and using local radio. DH is not coping well at all. He won't talk about it (in typical manly fashion) but he hasn't slept in the last two nights and when he's not working he's out combing the streets. I know it might sound a bit extreme, but the dog is like an extension of his identity. All of his leisure activities revolve around the dog (walking the dog in the forest, walking the dog at the beach) and the dog sleeps at the foot of the bed. It's just heartbreaking to watch him go through this.

If anybody would like to share the link on twitter/facebook etc. it's here: www.doglost.co.uk/dog_blog.php?dogId=40761

I have shared on facebook, although I am far away from you. He looks such a sweet dog, I so hoped you had found him- it says on the link that he was seen at 6p.m.? Was that far from you?

At 6pm he was reported seen on the opposite side of the river, maybe just over a quarter mile away. But the person reported to the owner of the local shop, not us, so we couldn't ask any questions to confirm that it was really him.

Would he go into the river? Could you poster near the banks so that dog-walkers there might spot him if he's got wet and cold and so is holed up somewhere? (have no idea what your river is like but here lots of walkers take dogs there) . My friend's cat was missing for nearly 10 days, in the end she found her because she literally knocked on every door locally, just went house to house asking everyone, and she was found on a windowsill (stuck and trapped, thirsty and thin but fine).

I don't think he would have gone into the river, but I think he would have been spotted if he had. The banks have just been trimmed and so the view into the water is clear. I got a (fairly blunt) email tonight from a coordinator at Alfie's lost dogs saying that somebody probably picked him up and kept him, which is my worst fear. So I'm crying and can't sleep. I want to believe that he'll be found by someone who would treat him well and do everything possible to get him back home again, because that's what I would do. I want to believe that people are like that. So the thought that he's been picked up by some opportunistic bastard who thinks "hey, free poodle" and keeps him, regardless of the fact that there's a family tearing their hair out and two little girls crying for him... That's just more than I can take. I really need my faith in humanity to be restored right now.
