Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Share advice, stories and shopping tips!

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!
:)

Coat business eh?

Scuttlebutter · 29/05/2012 21:43

Yes, Betsy Blush We all know there are lovely collar companies out there, but I felt there was a gap in the market for luxury coats. Lots of nice, functional coats out there - but they are all rather, ahem, dull. And since we know that pointies are natural aristocrats, they are ideally suited to the smoking jacket in the library approach... Grin So we are going to be doing two types to start with - a range of beautiful fleece housecoats, and a nice range of cotton walking out coats in beautiful eye catching fabrics, with a complementary range of bandanas. I particularly wanted to improve on some of the housecoats on the market - so ours are lined in cotton flannel and beautifully bound so they will keep their shape and not go baggy. Can also say that every single size has been tested on real dogs (including some MNetters - Grin ) and that a key feature of the site will be support for rescues. I have also been learning about less exciting things like VAT and Class 4 NI contributions - Smile I don't want this to be an advert, so I will PM you if you like when the site is up. I will also be attending events - big dog shows, greyhound gatherings etc.... Have just ordered my mobile PDQ machine from the bank - actually it's very exciting.

TheCunnyFunt · 29/05/2012 22:02

Oh bandanas! Cool! Sprocket would look fab in a bandana :o it sounds very exciting Scuttle, fwiw, my sister gets very excited about VAT. She's doing accounting at university. You'll have to let us know when you're up and running although I can already hear my bank balance groaning and saying 'computer says no' :o

Betsy that's like Sprocket! He has 4 white 'trainer socks' with a kind of arrow going up his heels, white chest and throat, and also a white arrow up his nose :)

TheCunnyFunt · 29/05/2012 22:07

Oh wrt the hound having a toe off, I'm not entirely sure why tbh, she has a recurring cut on that paw so maybe that has something to do with it. She has a fab bandage on it though, it's yellow with monkeys all over it :o I just found out the other day that her whippets parents belong to one of DPs workmates girlfriends stepmum. If you got that? :o

MissBetsyTrotwood · 30/05/2012 06:29

Excellent. Soon his Lordship will need his own dressing room and 'man' to select carefully the most appropriate outfit for the occasion. Grin

How lovely the diaspora all look so similar!

BehindLockNumberNine · 30/05/2012 07:40

Ooooh Nice, how exciting, there is nothing like the anticipation of being your pointy home.... Grin

Cunny - when we first brought Sam home I too discounted the idea of ever getting another dog. But we have had him nearly a year now and for the last month or so I think...well it would be nice...
But then my brain takes over and we shelf the idea for wee while longer!
But I think Sam would love some canine company...

Will read through rest of thread later as I am sure I have missed lots but need to get dc and myself ready for school now.

Have a fab day Smile

MissBetsyTrotwood · 30/05/2012 08:30

I'm ready for another dog RIGHT NOW but I fear our garden and car boot are too small and DH will leave me if I do.

I'm holding out hope that when we pick Billy up from the kennels after our camping week he will have become inseparable from some lovely little black girly and we'll have to take her home with us.

LostInWales · 30/05/2012 08:31

Morning, welcome NCOT, pointies are a far superior type of dog Grin

I hanker after a second dog in some fantasy world where they play together nicely and snuggle together on the sofa. In reality I am on my last day of babysitting whippety pup's brother and they have (play) fought constantly for the last 10 days and have had to take it in turns to sit with us in the evening because even when they snuggle they are biting at each others faces. If I could have a second dog that didn't ever poo I think I'd contemplate it.

Is is possible to restart obedience training? We were doing quite well but then he got a bit hormonal and I didn't trust him to be let off, now he is calming down I want to let him go for a nice run again because he loves it so much.

I am just itching to buy my first nice dog coat now he has stopped growing

LostInWales · 30/05/2012 08:31

Grin MissBetsy

NotMostPeople · 30/05/2012 09:59

Cunny that was what I say, Pointy No1 is just twelve months and last week pointy No2 arrived and it's bliss to see him so happy with a friend to play with, whilst giving a loving home to her.

NCOT as I'm back in puppy mode I've found the best way to deal with accidents is to fill a bucket full of water and disinfectant each morning so it's on standby for any accidents. That way you can quickly soak it up with kitchen roll and then mop/scrub the area with something smelly to get rid of the urine smell. We came downstairs to a dry house this morning, not bad after four days.

NiceCupOfTea · 30/05/2012 12:37

Hi - quick update: We passed the house-check, yay!! The girl we want is just over 4 years old and in foster at the moment, so she's used to housey machines and small farty boys. Goodness, I want a dog so much it feels just like when I wanted to have kids (so many moons ago Grin), like an ache...

Thanks everyone for the fab advice: Scuttle Thanks you are most definitely a total grund-guru of the highest order and should be worshipped as such. At least I now know where to get my girlie's coats from [ticks off coats from long, long shopping list].

Promise to keep you all updated - hoping to meet grund girlie at her fosters' soon (fingers crossed it all goes well) Smile

TheCunnyFunt · 30/05/2012 14:19

Congratulations NCOT! I'm so excited for you! GRWE do some lovely collars, that's where I got Sprockets collars from, both his house and walking ones. There's loads of other websites too, you can even get Swarovski crystal collars Shock

Ordered my ring today :o it has to be sent off for re-sizing (just by half a size!) and won't be back until 15th june!! The day before my birthday :)

DD took her first steps yesterday too :)

MissBetsyTrotwood · 30/05/2012 14:25

Yessss, the double poos Lost ... that might put me off!

It's all go Cunny ! Is DD going to be a bridesmaid? Have you thought any more about Sprocket's starring role?

New dogs, walking tinies, the sun's shining, how lovely. Smile

BehindLockNumberNine · 30/05/2012 15:37

Oooo Scuttle, I can't wait to order some dodgy pyjamas from you (for Sam you understand, not for me)

Please do let us know as soon as you have your website up and running...

TheCunnyFunt · 30/05/2012 16:26

Dodgy Lock? I don't think scuttles products will be dodgy :o

Scuttlebutter · 30/05/2012 16:54

Shock at the "Dodgy" PJs..... Grin

I LOVE the idea of Sprocket being a ring bearer or otherwise involved. And v exciting that DD is now walking, just in time to toddle down the aisle leading a beautiful greyhound, both looking adorable. Smile

I am such a romantic - really love weddings and can reliably be found, hanky in hand looking all gooey, standing next to DH looking stern and manly and slightly embarrassed. Grin

BehindLockNumberNine · 30/05/2012 17:20

Oh fuck!! Sorry!!! Doggy pyjamas is what that should have said... Doggy!!

BehindLockNumberNine · 30/05/2012 17:21

Gah! Can't embolden either.

Off to burn cook dinner...

BehindLockNumberNine · 30/05/2012 17:22

Have just gone slightly misty-eyed at the idea of little P toddeling down the aisle with Sprocket bearing the ring....

Awwwwwww....

TheCunnyFunt · 30/05/2012 17:52

Awww they'd be so cuuuuuuute! So going to tell DP that has to happen when we eventually do tie the knot.

Still :o at dodgy pyjamas :o

MissBetsyTrotwood · 31/05/2012 07:26

Anyone else having another moult? I think the very hot weather has brought it on and he's looking all sort of fluffy.

Annoying as he's going back to his kennels next week for our camping trip and I was hoping to have him looking absolutely tip top. Grin

I don't want to say goodbye so DH, the man with the heart of stone, is taking him up there. Although, and I do feel guilty saying this, I'm quite looking forward to the break. I know that's an awful thing to feel and I am already looking forward to going to pick him up afterwards. It's a bit like when the children go to nursery for the first time!

MissBetsyTrotwood · 31/05/2012 07:28

Also, can I put pics on my profile on here but so they can only be seen by you lot?

TheCunnyFunt · 31/05/2012 07:35

I know exactly what you mean Betsy, you love them a lot but it's nice to have a break once in a while. I feel like that about DD (or little P :o) but that's ok because MIL takes her every wednesday from 12 till teatime.

Wrt pictures, don't think you can do that on here. But maybe you could set up a flickr account or something like that and just post a linky on here?

loobylou67 · 31/05/2012 10:47

Hi, been lurking for a while: we have a little whippety girl, who thinks she is a princess Smile, we haven't the heart to tell her otherwise!
Scuttle please could you also pm me when you have got the website for coats up and running? I am hoping you will be doing little whippet sizes, the cotton walking out coats sound fab!

Scuttlebutter · 31/05/2012 13:03

Hi Looby, yes both whippies and iggies will be catered for!!

Much much cooler here today - actually looks like it might rain. Dogs much more energetic and bouncy as a consequence on their walk this morning. Boola was doing his patented "I am a 12 year old spring lamb" vertical hop/jump while scampering about - it's so lovely to see. All now reclining on various beds/duvets etc for that all important early afternoon power nap.

I felt like that when we had a break up in London recently - I really enjoyed doing all the resolutely nondoggy stuff and was happy as I wasn't thinking about them. However, it all fell apart if I saw someone with a dog. We saw a lovely dog and his owner on the South Bank near Boris's lair and I got quite overcome as the lovely dog was playing with his owner and looking v happy, which made me miss ours. Once I couldn't see them, though, strolling round Borough market or downing an assortment of gin based cocktails became very much easier Grin
