Hi all. I'm a long time lurker but first time joiner and poster.

I have three young children (ages from 16 months to 4 years) and we've just purchased a gorgeous gold pedigree labrador bitch. She is arriving on Monday and at the moment she is six weeks old. The breeders told us that she has been eating puppy food and drinking whole milk as well as feeding from her mother.

I've had dogs before but this is the first time I've had a labrador and the first time I've had a puppy of my own. What do I need to know? I thought I'd ask here as you all seem to be the most experienced I've read.

Thanks for any answers.

Ok. It's an hour before her EDT. I'm starting to feel anxious.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/04/2012 17:02

Oops - that was meant to be envy and a Smile.

revolutionconfirmed · 02/04/2012 17:13

She's cuddled up in my lap asleep. She is amazing. She'll probably pee on me to let me know how amazing she is.

Well - one of the things that swung our choice of labrador puppy when we went to meet the litter for the first time, was the fact that Coco peed on ds3! She licked dh and fell asleep on me, then wee'd on ds3 - and that was the clincher!

revolutionconfirmed · 02/04/2012 17:24

I am a bit snap happy but you have GOT to see the new asleep photo!

omg!!!!!!! Beautiful

revolutionconfirmed · 02/04/2012 20:20

charlearose I'm with MORETHAN on a policy that insures her for life up to £7,000 per condition with an excess of £70 that you only pay once a year rather than at every appointment and you only pay 10% of the treatment costs (£30 eardrops would cost £3 etc). It was the best deal I could find and her cover starts from next week at her 8th week.

Is this decent?

She's squeaking (almost like a squeaky bark) and light growling in her sleep. I assume that's normal?

batsintheroof · 02/04/2012 20:59

She is lovely!

Please please please don't follow that pack leader crap. Read In Defence of Dogs and The Culture Clash. It's all rubbish.

herladyship · 02/04/2012 21:14

should....not....have....looked

now i have puppy envy! Envy Grin

revolutionconfirmed · 02/04/2012 21:16

So, she's had a feed of wet food. Her stools seem to be mainly solid but a little runny. Normal?

Also, should I buy dry puppy food tomorrow when I go to pets at home and just use a little water to mush it until she's used to it or should I keep her on the breeders choice of Pedigree Chum for a few more weeks?

batsintheroof I have downloaded The Culture Clash and I'm mid way through it. I won't be following the pack leader advice until I've read all that I can both for and against. I'll look into downloading In Defence of Dogs too, thank you.

Cool! :) Clicker-training is a great way to train dogs btw- Even my thick greyhound has mastered it. A lab puppy could be trained very easily!

She's a beaut

revolutionconfirmed · 03/04/2012 07:58

So, we survived the first night. She did two little poos in the travel cot but nothing substantial and was up and fed by 7am. Now she's hyperactive :o.
