Hi all. I'm a long time lurker but first time joiner and poster.

I have three young children (ages from 16 months to 4 years) and we've just purchased a gorgeous gold pedigree labrador bitch. She is arriving on Monday and at the moment she is six weeks old. The breeders told us that she has been eating puppy food and drinking whole milk as well as feeding from her mother.

I've had dogs before but this is the first time I've had a labrador and the first time I've had a puppy of my own. What do I need to know? I thought I'd ask here as you all seem to be the most experienced I've read.

Thanks for any answers.

I'll check the photos out on my laptop as the link isn't working on here for me.

I'm so glad life is better for you, Gilly. Has she had her vaccinations? Sadie has her second and microchipping on Tuesday. A week later she'll be going on her first walk! :D

Second jab a week on Monday then a week later off we go

She had a puppy play date today with a friends whippet. Hilarious stuff

revolutionconfirmed · 22/04/2012 15:41

I can't seem to click on your name to find your profile, Gilly but I've just been.on.the laptop and saw her. Oh my God! So adorable. I want another! Wink

How was the playdate? Sadie has seen other dogs but has not been down around them or played yet.

I can't believe how lab-like she is!

cannot see the pics!

Gillybobs · 22/04/2012 19:40

I know she is extremely lab-like at the moment but I think she will grow a pretty shaggy long coat in time. She is charming the pants off everyone she meets. Puppy play date went mostly well, friends whippet is fast and stronger than her so we had to keep an eye on their rough "play" but she loved it, her tail was wagging like crazy. She also had a quick play with a neighbours full grown labradoodle today which was fun to watch!

Pics should be visible on profile now Allergic

Just got on your profile and am now jealous of your hair. Thanks Gilly! :o

Just had a real scare with Sadie. I came home from picking up DD1 from nursery and turned around to tell her to come in and shut the door when Sadie went out, out through the open gate and (luckily, ever so luckily) was sniffing at a man's feet right outside the gate. We live near a road. It's a one way street that isn't very busy but opens on to a large main road a few meters from the house. I picked her up, brought her inside (the poor man must have thought I was very rude), plonked her on the floor in the hall and gave DD1 a very stern telling off.

Now I feel awful. I've sat down and explained to DD1 what happened and how it could have meant Sadie was hurt and that when mummy tells her to come in she has to but I still feel awful.

I just started freaking out. Not the best move and I shouldn't have been so rude to that man or as hard on DD1 as I was.

Don't be hard on yourself, your reaction is perfectly understandable

She just fell asleep on the sofa, thought the duvetwas the edge and rolled right off. Almost as funnyas her eating chicken from DP's hand while asleep earlier and waking up totally confused.

Vaccination #2 and microchipping tomorrow! Hope it all goes well.

Sadie has just had vaccination #2 and has been microchipped. I know she needs to be wormed at 12 weeks and every month thereafter but is there anything else I need to do? Any more vaccinations or treatments?

I'll be booking her in to be spayed in a few months time. Will she have to stay overnight at the vet or is it a one day surgery? Does anyone have information on spaying a young dog?

just read your latest blog. She has got so big!!! What a beautiful dog Smile

Gillybobs · 25/04/2012 08:29

Latest blog is very sweet. SHe is just gorgeous.

Its amazing how quickly theyve both settled in. Amber has her jab next Tuesday. Cant wait. SHe has been an absolute gem at nights which is making her all the more adorable. Wen I come down in the morning she does a little squeal then rolls on to her back for a good tummy rub : )

revolutionconfirmed · 25/04/2012 13:38

Aww bless her! I'd have a house full of dogs if I had the money and time. I adore them. I've always had two together so it's odd that I only have one but one with two children is enough :o.

Quick question, does anybody know when labs get hairy as in hair loss. Our 4 mth old is not shedding yet. Just wondering when it starts.

AllergicToNutters · 26/04/2012 20:52

Just be relievedGrin

lulalullabye · 26/04/2012 23:53

We are but we are maybe wondering if all labs do. I am presuming so.

AllergicToNutters · 27/04/2012 07:30

wouldn't it be great if yours didn't Grin

revolutionconfirmed · 27/04/2012 07:48

Not sure if they shed noticeably. Google?
