On Friday and Saturday our lovely rescued whippety cross, Sam, had a bit of diarrhea. Still playful and eating, drinking etc.
On Sunday he started to be a bit lethargic and felt sorry for himself. I had decided to starve him for 24 hours from Sat night as diarrhea was not clearing but he was off his food anyway on Sunday. Had rang lady at rescue where we got him from for advice (she is fab like this, always ready to help and was a vet nurse so a bit knowledgeable too). By Sunday night there was a steak of red blood in the diarrhea. Rang emergency vet who said Sam had probably burst a blood vessel due to contstant pooping. Keep up giving him water and keep an eye was the advice.

Early Monday morning Sam was pooing pure blood and looking very very unwell. We rushed him to the vets.
He was admitted, put on a drip and IV antibiotics. Severe Gastroenteritis or Hemorraghic Gastroenteritis was the diagnosis.

On Tuesday morning he was still no better. They decided to put him on a second type of antibiotics as well as the first one.

This morning he is a bit brighter and whilst he still has diarrhea there is no more blood.
However, his liver enzymes have rocketed to over 1000 and he is jaundiced.

We are going to visit him this evening and the vet will tell us more then.

Please please knowledgeable mumsnetters, can you give me an idea of what is happening to my lovely boy. Am very very worried.

We only adopted him from the rescue centre two months ago but we love him to bits.

Hi guys,

I won't be updating this thread for a while as my mum has just phoned and my dad (who has terminal lung cancer) has been rushed into hospital and is not expected to survive the next day. So I am rushing off to Holland now. I have left Sam in the capable hands of the vets and Jane will be making the decisions as to what needs doing in conjunction with dh.

Thank you all again for your continued support and handholding.

xx

I'm so sorrySad thank you MAS for letting us know. xxx

BehindLockNumberNine · 08/11/2011 13:20

Hello all,

Thank you all for still being here Smile

MAS is right, my dear dad passed away early Friday morning. We had been sitting beside his bed and sleeping in the hospital since Tuesday night. I can honestly say that it was a very traumatic experience but I am glad I was there.

My mum, dsis and I are busy making funeral arrangements (which is also very harrowing, the loss of dad has not really sunk in yet...) and the funeral will take place on Thursday.

Sam came home on Friday, with a supply of easily digestible diet food, antibiotic tablets and probiotic tablets. He is definately turning into a stubborn little whippety boy as he point blank refuses the diet food, demanding instead to be hand-fed bits of boiled chicken breast, and spitting out even the tiniest crumble of tablets. So dh has a bit of a battle on his hands.
Apparently he also looks like a bit of a raggedy-dog as he has shaved patches on 3 of his legs, one on his neck and one on his shoulder. And that is before we even look at his entirely shaved tummy!
So glad we bought him a fleece lined wintercoat a few weeks ago - he is going to need it!!
He had a follow up appointment at the vet this morning, I have not yet spoken to dh but I hope all is well.

Elibean, out of curiosity, how did you have good news of Sam? Smile

Right, better go. We are off to the photographer to collect the enlarged and framed photo of my father which is to go on the coffin on Thursday.

Thank you all for being here, you are brilliant and I wish I knew you all in real life xx

maybeyoushoulddrive · 08/11/2011 14:23

Lovely news about Sam - not behaving himself is a good sign I think!

You must be so so grateful to have been able to be with your Dad and the rest of your family. I can't imagine how hard all this must be for you, but am sending as much strength to cope as I possibly can. Thinking of you all the time, but especially on Thursday. All my love xxx

Elibean · 08/11/2011 16:49

Welcome back, lovey Smile

I'm glad you got to be with your Dad, though can only imagine how awful at the same time. Lots of love to you, and here's to hugs with Sam xxxx

ps will pm you

KatharineClifton · 08/11/2011 20:00

I'm really sorry for your loss NumberNine.

oldqueenie · 08/11/2011 20:41

very sorry indeed to hear about your dad. will think of you on thursday.
good news about sam. so pleased to hear sam's on the mend though.

oldqueenie · 08/11/2011 20:42

that came out a bit oddly... but i hope you got the idea Confused

BehindLockNumberNine · 09/11/2011 16:59

Sadly the euphoria was shortlived. Dh said Sam was not himself on Monday and Tuesday, and on Tuesday the oedema returned, as did the diarrhea.
Back to the vets he went and they are keeping him in.
It is suspected the plasma he received allowed him to function normally but the liver was obviously damaged to the extent it could not maintain healthy blood levels. I am not sure if we are able or if we should put Sam through biopsies etc.
As I am still in Holland, and dh and the children are now on a plane to come over for the funeral we are leaving Jane in charge. And I don't know how this is going to end.
Everything is a bit crap tbh, but am sure we will get there.

Thank you all for your continued support, and in light of the other threads (which I have not fully read) I hope DBF is ok.

Petra xx
