On Friday and Saturday our lovely rescued whippety cross, Sam, had a bit of diarrhea. Still playful and eating, drinking etc.
On Sunday he started to be a bit lethargic and felt sorry for himself. I had decided to starve him for 24 hours from Sat night as diarrhea was not clearing but he was off his food anyway on Sunday. Had rang lady at rescue where we got him from for advice (she is fab like this, always ready to help and was a vet nurse so a bit knowledgeable too). By Sunday night there was a steak of red blood in the diarrhea. Rang emergency vet who said Sam had probably burst a blood vessel due to contstant pooping. Keep up giving him water and keep an eye was the advice.

Early Monday morning Sam was pooing pure blood and looking very very unwell. We rushed him to the vets.
He was admitted, put on a drip and IV antibiotics. Severe Gastroenteritis or Hemorraghic Gastroenteritis was the diagnosis.

On Tuesday morning he was still no better. They decided to put him on a second type of antibiotics as well as the first one.

This morning he is a bit brighter and whilst he still has diarrhea there is no more blood.
However, his liver enzymes have rocketed to over 1000 and he is jaundiced.

We are going to visit him this evening and the vet will tell us more then.

Please please knowledgeable mumsnetters, can you give me an idea of what is happening to my lovely boy. Am very very worried.

We only adopted him from the rescue centre two months ago but we love him to bits.

Thinking of you and Sam and hoping today brings more positive news. xxx

BehindLockNumberNine · 31/10/2011 12:22

Was back at work today (half term holiday is over Sad) so have not yet spoken to the vet.
She did however leave an answerphone message on my mobile this morning saying that the liver appears to still not be working and they are sending him off somewhere for an ultrasound.

Not sure how much further we should perservere with this, I love Sam dearly but don't want him to suffer Sad

Will keep you all posted, thank you for all the paw-holding. Dd has bandaged all her stuffed toy animals up - well, their legs - and Coco the rabbit even has a drip (fashioned out of a Nintendo ds charger cable).

Will get there, thanks again xx

GalaxyAddict · 31/10/2011 13:57

I have been following your thread about Sam, and just wanted to say, fingers and paws (from Maisey the cat) crossed for a better Sam soon.

BehindLockNumberNine · 31/10/2011 14:54

Hello,

Just come back from visiting Sam. He has been referred to a specialist vet, luckily still local to us. He has had an ultrasound done on his liver and all looks well, there are not obvious signs of a chronic liver disease. There is a lot of fluid in the abdomen though.
Had a long chat with the specialist vet who has taken over his care. She thinks that because there is no obvous liver damage whatever is going on with Sam is not due to a chronic liver disease.
She is thinking it is due to a (perhaps chronic, perhaps acute) gastro problem.

She will run a liver function test tomorrow and then we will know more.

So, that is the latest. By the time this is finished Sam will literally be worth his weight in gold! My poor doggle.
But the vet thinks there is a good chance of a full recovery. So there is still hope Grin

I've been following this thread.
It's good news that the vet thinks he can make a full recovery. Lets hope they get it all sorted soon.
My Spaniel went to a specialist center too, very impressive but slightly overwhelming places!

kid · 31/10/2011 16:37

thats great to hear that the vet believes there is still hope and thats what you need to hang on to. Thank you for taking the time to update us, I've been checking back here on and off today.

bumpybecky · 31/10/2011 17:42

oh that does sound like good news, fingers firmly crossed here :)

he's a lucky dog to have found you :)

BehindLockNumberNine · 31/10/2011 18:57

Thank you all again xx.

Frooooots, I never even know these referral places existed. I had driven past this one numerous times but as the logo incorporates some blue wiggely lines and the name is one of the local river / area I had stupidly assumed it was something to do with the waterboard / waterways. [hblush]
It is indeed an impressive place, and the care Sam is receiving is second to none Smile

Tomorrow they are doing a liver function test, we will know more then. We are seeing the vet (and Sam) tomorrow afternoon so will get test results then. Will keep you all updated.

Thank you again for your support and handholding, you are all brilliant [hgrin]

That sounds more positive tentativeSmile Sending huge pats and love. My doggle went to the vet referral centre you're describing (hip problems) and I too drove past convinced it was the water board Blush Very confusing! They were great though!

MAS thank you. Not going well ATMSad Did you get my PM??

WitchesBrewIsMyFriend · 31/10/2011 22:08
