On Friday and Saturday our lovely rescued whippety cross, Sam, had a bit of diarrhea. Still playful and eating, drinking etc.
On Sunday he started to be a bit lethargic and felt sorry for himself. I had decided to starve him for 24 hours from Sat night as diarrhea was not clearing but he was off his food anyway on Sunday. Had rang lady at rescue where we got him from for advice (she is fab like this, always ready to help and was a vet nurse so a bit knowledgeable too). By Sunday night there was a steak of red blood in the diarrhea. Rang emergency vet who said Sam had probably burst a blood vessel due to contstant pooping. Keep up giving him water and keep an eye was the advice.

Early Monday morning Sam was pooing pure blood and looking very very unwell. We rushed him to the vets.
He was admitted, put on a drip and IV antibiotics. Severe Gastroenteritis or Hemorraghic Gastroenteritis was the diagnosis.

On Tuesday morning he was still no better. They decided to put him on a second type of antibiotics as well as the first one.

This morning he is a bit brighter and whilst he still has diarrhea there is no more blood.
However, his liver enzymes have rocketed to over 1000 and he is jaundiced.

We are going to visit him this evening and the vet will tell us more then.

Please please knowledgeable mumsnetters, can you give me an idea of what is happening to my lovely boy. Am very very worried.

We only adopted him from the rescue centre two months ago but we love him to bits.

sorry you are going through this.
Jane wanting to care for him is no reflection on you, take care and fingers crossed for good news.x

Elibean · 16/11/2011 14:29

BLNN....I am going to PM you as soon as I get the chance. Meanwhile, glad Sam is with Jane who has all the necessary equipment (heat lamps etc) and, tbh, glad that you do'nt hvae to do all that work on top of dealing with shock and grief. The guilt is all misplaced, but it probably doesn't help to hear that at this point......big hugs.

Hello, just a quick update on the Pointy One for those of you still following this thread...

I went to see him at the kennels today and he is looking much better. J obviously has the magic touch. She did say it was still early days but for now she is really pleased with him. He is eating (but being picky and taking the chicken but not the diet food), he is weeing normally and his poo is normal too now. He is happier and brighter and his tail is wagging.

Had a lovely hour on his bed with him, snuggled up under the heatlamp (it was so snug and cosy I nearly fell asleep)

So, fingers crossed we are getting somewhere...

Oh, that is lovely news. And if he is getting a bit of appetite back, that's excellent. The heat lamps are lovely, arent' they? V cosy. You might find that he is very picky when he comes home Grin - he will be getting used to the VIP treatment, and liking the hand fed chicken....

So pleased to hear this - you deserve a bit of good news. Sending another hug.

Elibean · 18/11/2011 14:01

Hurrah for Sam! We shall have to call him VIP-Sam now....Smile

He sounds soo much better than a week or two ago. Very good news.

BehindLockNumberNine · 18/11/2011 16:22

Elibean, J did say that it would have been cheaper to have him gold-plated and that he is the most expensive dog she has ever come across!! Yikes...

Will try and get some pictures of him when we go and see him tomorrow :-)

Elibean · 18/11/2011 18:53

Ooh yes, please, pics!!

Gold plated Sam...now you're talking Smile

BehindLockNumberNine · 18/11/2011 20:26

Have just come off the phone with Jane.

She is very pleased with him. He is lively, his tail is wagging and he is interested in the world around him Smile

He is starting to eat the diet food but only once he realises that you are not going to hand feed him chicken. (cheeky boy obviously thinks being handfed chicken is the way to go!)
She had him out in the field with her just now and she said his poo is soft but formed which is what she would expect at this stage.

She took him to the vet this morning for a check up. The vet was very pleased with him and they decided to postpone the blood test until Monday as all the signs are good so far.
Jane said he loved travelling in the car. She had one of her own houndies with her as it too needed vet attention. Her own houndie was in the boot so she put Sam on the front passenger seat. She said he spent the entire journey gazing out of the window and being interested in the outside world Grin She said when they got back to the car after the vet appt she opened the boot, Sam hopped in and clambered through the car to the front seat Grin

Jane has apparently also spoken to one of her other vets, a specialist in IBD in dogs and who is going to send her info on alternative treatments for Sam. Additives to his food etc.
She really is going all out to fix my little boy and I am speechless and humbled and in awe of what she is doing.

We are going to spend most of the day at the kennels tomorrow helping out and seeing Sam. Will take some pictures Smile

really pleased to hear your update, he sounds much happier :)

stleger · 18/11/2011 20:53

Glad he is perking up - I read the early part of this thread...you have had a lot to cope with, I'm sure Sam will be glad to get home Smile Look after yourselves.

BehindLockNumberNine · 19/11/2011 20:54

We visited the Pointy One at the kennels today. We were allowed to take him for a little walk at the nearby woods.

As soon as we arrived at the woods he had diarrhoea even though J said his poos had been normal in the past few days. We had a lovely gentle stroll and stopped for a cup of tea. All was well. Sam appeared interested in the world around him but definately not as energetic - which is to be expected. When we walked back to the car he was sick twice.

We mentioned this to J when we got back who said the diarrhoea was probably due to excitement and the being sick due to him having had a biggish meal not long before we took him for a walk. She is not overly concerned.

She has just rung, dh spoke to her, and Sam is fine. His poos are still runny but he has not been sick again and has eaten a little bit.

So we keep going...

aw,bless him...

Elibean · 19/11/2011 22:57

He is an absolute poppet - a very handsome lad, no wonder VIPness comes easily to him Wink

So glad he's doing well, and hope today's runny poos are a blip. He looks like a dog who intends to recover completely...

...and I did laugh at his jumping over to front seat from boot!

Scuttlebutter · 19/11/2011 23:45

Seeing the pics gave me a lump in my throat. You can see he has really been through a tough time and still looks poorly but as though he is turning the corner. So thin, darling boy. Hope Jane continues to work her magic and he begins to keep food down and put on a bit of weight and gain condition. Hopefully, he'll be able to enjoy being home again with you soon.

kid · 20/11/2011 00:03

its lovely to hear an update and it does sound promising that he is improving. I hope he continues to get better and that he is back to full health soon.

BehindLockNumberNine · 21/11/2011 16:03

Sam is home!!!!

I had a half day at work today so went straight up the kennels to visit Sam.
Had a lovely cuddle with him and walked him round the field.

Then J asked me if I wanted to take him home. So I did Grin Actually, it was not as simple as that - Sam is still poorly and is still very much recovering. He needs to be on 4 small meals a day, which he needs to be tempted to eat (ie hand fed) He has 3 different types of meds which I need to administer up to 3 times a day. And he has to go back to J's vet on Friday for a checkup. And back to either the vet or to J for a B12 injection. So we are not there yet, but I am now in charge of doggle's health...
J is just on the other end of the phone though, should I need it.

Thank you for all your handholding over the past month, you are a fab lot!!

yay !! terrific news -he'll soon be perky and bright under your care, you'll see x

Scuttlebutter · 21/11/2011 21:24

Oh, this is such fab news. Remember to take lots of pics. When you have time between hand feeding chicken and administering emergency cuddles. Wink Grin

kid · 21/11/2011 21:30

so glad to hear he is back home with you, thats great news Smile

BehindLockNumberNine · 21/11/2011 22:15

Thank you all Smile
Am feeling a bit weighed down by the responsibility of it all but that is completely outweighed by the absolute wonderfullness of having him home. The kids have not stopped stroking him all afternoon, then I had him on my lap for the first part of the evening and he has now moved to the sofa dh is on and is snuggled up and wrapped in a blanket (soppy dh is taking the 'keep him warm' advice very seriously Wink)
