On Friday and Saturday our lovely rescued whippety cross, Sam, had a bit of diarrhea. Still playful and eating, drinking etc.
On Sunday he started to be a bit lethargic and felt sorry for himself. I had decided to starve him for 24 hours from Sat night as diarrhea was not clearing but he was off his food anyway on Sunday. Had rang lady at rescue where we got him from for advice (she is fab like this, always ready to help and was a vet nurse so a bit knowledgeable too). By Sunday night there was a steak of red blood in the diarrhea. Rang emergency vet who said Sam had probably burst a blood vessel due to contstant pooping. Keep up giving him water and keep an eye was the advice.

Early Monday morning Sam was pooing pure blood and looking very very unwell. We rushed him to the vets.
He was admitted, put on a drip and IV antibiotics. Severe Gastroenteritis or Hemorraghic Gastroenteritis was the diagnosis.

On Tuesday morning he was still no better. They decided to put him on a second type of antibiotics as well as the first one.

This morning he is a bit brighter and whilst he still has diarrhea there is no more blood.
However, his liver enzymes have rocketed to over 1000 and he is jaundiced.

We are going to visit him this evening and the vet will tell us more then.

Please please knowledgeable mumsnetters, can you give me an idea of what is happening to my lovely boy. Am very very worried.

We only adopted him from the rescue centre two months ago but we love him to bits.

You guys are beyond wonderful, thank you thank you. This is definately the silver lining in Sam's illness - the wonderful kindness of virtual strangers. (I say virtual because I feel as if I sort of know you allSmile)

Dh says a massive thank you too. (acutally, he is saying nothing, he is speechless. Which for him (Mr Chatterbox) is unusual.

Btw, he came home after an hour and a half last night. He went to his mums for a cuppa. His mum is fab and fair and lovely so that is a good thing Smile
He then came home, made me a coffee and we went to bed without saying too much to each other. Then, at 4am the wooden venetian blind in the hallway fell down (rubbish diy skills too Wink) and that woke us up. We then sat in the kitchen with a cup of tea having a proper talk and all is well with the world. He is lovely, just stressed and worried about Sam and worried about me getting in a state. He was also not blaming me for running the vets bill up but commending me to his mum about wanting to try all for Sam. So actually, he was being fair. I grabbed hold of the wrong end of the stick and swung for him with it Blush

Anyway, have had a lovely evening carving pumpkins with the children. Tomorrow morning the vet will ring again. I am really really hoping Sam picks up and the blood test show signs of an imminent recovery. And then hopefully, sometime next week we can bring him home. I dare not hope too much but am feeling much more hopeful. (never thought an abscess on my dog would make me happy [hconfused])

Thanks again to all of you. You are amazing and I will forever be indebted to you all. And I will post new pictures of Sam once he is home (fingers crossed).

first time i checked your profile. sam is gorgeous. wow, he is a lucky dog to have you as his family

unexpected big bills are stressful. add on to that the worry about a dog and enough for anyone to get very stressed. i am currently on a wait and see for a week (on vet's advice) after finding a lump on my dog. i have insurance, he has not newly joined our family, but i am still very stressed about it. its natural and shows how much you all care about him

love the pic of the lock. we love walking by the canal and thought that was why you chose your name. me, i have chickens so didnt use any imagination when thinking of a name for myself Grin

Elibean · 29/10/2011 22:35

Will look for news in the morning...

WitchesBrewIsMyFriend · 29/10/2011 23:05

just found this thread. wishing Sam well and sending lots of doggy and human love and hugs your way. I know how distressing having a very ill dog is. Sheesh, just go look at some of my old threads on Loofa.

Happy to chuck some money in the fund too. Let me know how and I will do it.

I am so sorry about this mornings news. Everything crossed here to hope that Sam who sounds a delight and a fighter will perk up soon. If you need more blood one of mine donates and would be willing and eager (does anything for a biscuit)

BehindLockNumberNine · 30/10/2011 11:17

Hi guys, this is an amended copy of my post from earlier which I have asked to be deleted. So at some point both messages will be up. This is the update: After the euphoria of yesterday, the phonecall this morning was much less hopeful.

He has had more diarrhea, so this is still not clearing up. The proteins in the blood are way too low.
They are concerned his liver has permanently packed up as there is no change in the blood tests and the fact the diarrhea is still present.
So, the plan now is to do a blood transfusion. Because his blood is too toxic due to the liver not doing what it should. If the new blood, within a matter of time (don't know how long) has been destroyed (as in plasma and protein levels are low) then we know the liver is not functioning at all and has in fact 'ruined' the new blood. Then we are looking at ... well, I don't know.

In addition he has started collecting fluid under the skin.

So all in all things are worse.

Jane as been fantastic in offering support and advice and she is adamant 'all is not lost' and Sam still has a chance.

So please carry on keeping everything crossed for my beautiful doggle.

Have sent a PM to all of you lovely people on this thread. But am not too great with computers so please let me know if you do not get it and I will try again xx

Oh, and the thinking now is that he never had gastroenteritis but that his liver has been failing right from the start. All the symptoms fit. Every single one (have been googling)

So now I guess the question is - how bad is the liver damage, why does a liver fail in an appearently healthy 18 month old dog, can the liver repair itself or is the damage to extensive.

They now think the abscess is just a coincidence.

Bugger Sad

I'm sorry the news is less positive today :( can't think of anything helpful to say, but will be thinking of you and Sam xx

peggyblackett · 30/10/2011 11:43

BLNN, so sorry to read this. I will send some money tonight once dcs are in bed. Sending you and the lovely Sam lots of positive thoughts.

KatharineClifton · 30/10/2011 15:00

To those who have donated, if you go to the webpage and then 'Donate or volunteer' you can download the 'Make a one-off donation' page and fill it in and email it back. If you do this then the donation will be gift aided and add more to Sam's fund.

WitchesBrewIsMyFriend · 30/10/2011 15:04

oh no blnn that is so sad and upseting. I will giftaid the donation so will do it under DH name.

Elibean · 30/10/2011 15:10

Goodness, I'm so sorry....Sad I was honestly expecting better news, as per the abcess info. I suppose, if Sam has liver problems, he would be more prone to developing infections....but it does sound unusual for such a young dog to have liver problems, which makes it even sadder.

Sending strength and hugs, Behind, and hoping the wise Jane is right.

kid · 30/10/2011 19:09

My lips mum had liver failure. The breeder thinks it nay have coincided with the dogs booster but there was no evidence to back that claim up. Her dog remained on antibiotics for 6 months and after a huge vet bill, the dog made a full recovery.

BehindLockNumberNine · 30/10/2011 20:42

Thanks kid, that is something to cling on to Smile

We went to see Sam this afternoon. He is one sorry sight. He has shaved patches on each of his front legs, where the drips went in. He has a drip in his rear leg, and the whole leg is bandaged up. He is wearing a 'lampshade' because he nibbled his last drip out of his leg. He has a massive shaved patch on his shoulder with two holes where the abscess was. He has blood and diarrhea stuck to underneath his tail. His face is swollen up with oedema. And he looks very very miserable. He is also still jaundiced and has a temperature.

My poor little man.

The vet will phone tomorrow with an update. Will keep you posted. Your support means the world, thank you all xx

My previous message was sent on my phone so you'll have to excuse the spelling mistakes and try to figure out what I was meant to type!
