I'm not far away either, do you still live there? Is the whole of Corus closing? I heard it's only certain parts? Very very sad either way

DrNortherner · 29/03/2010 17:11

I love watching The Secret Millionaire

ToccataAndFudge · 29/03/2010 17:16

really - oh what time is that (I rarely watch TV but know Redcar pretty well, my cousin lives there) and other family dotted around.

Corus closing will kill the place

BuzzingNoise · 29/03/2010 17:18

It's usually about 9pm. What is Corus?

SPBInDisguise · 29/03/2010 17:23

why's it sometimes called Corus and sometimes TCP?
I also have family and live in the area

nappyzoneloveslindor · 29/03/2010 17:27

ooo really - my dad worked there when it was British Steel - what time is it on?

AmeliaCordelia · 29/03/2010 19:24

I must admit i didn't recognise the Leicester of a few weeks ago. I'm guessing this is becasue i've been lucky.

kittya · 29/03/2010 23:18

I cried all the way through it. At first I wasnt keen on the millionaire, thought he was abit self-centred. Liked him by the end though. Why didnt it show you him giving the cheque in the hospice? I still dont beleive that people dont cotton on.

MummyDoIt · 29/03/2010 23:19

Oh, I wish I'd seen this. I grew up in Redcar and still have family there.

CarGirl · 29/03/2010 23:20

I'm from Teesside too, I was very irritated that the narrator couldn't pronounce it properly red "c" rather than red car.

It's so so sad 1600 jobs lost when the furnance shut down

SinninHinny · 29/03/2010 23:22

I'm about 10 miles away and have friends who worked there.

It's bloody depressing.

kittya · 29/03/2010 23:23

MDI its repeated now on one of the other sides. It shocking the amount of jobs.

CarGirl · 29/03/2010 23:24

Part of me things is Redcar going to become another Hartlepool, no work, no hope, early parenthood the only option of something to "do" with your life

It frustrates me when people where I live now SE moan about the lack of work opportunities they truly have no idea how it could be.

kittya · 29/03/2010 23:29

It irritates me when people have such a grim view of the north full stop. Its very sad that people have to move from what they know and love just to find work.

MummyDoIt · 29/03/2010 23:29

Kittya, so it is! Might try and catch it online, though, so I can watch from the beginning.

The area was depressed enough when I left more than 20 years ago. Lack of job opportunities was a big part of the reason I moved away. It must be truly desperate now.

CarGirl · 29/03/2010 23:33

I went back in the summer for the first time in 10 years it's just so beautiful and cleaner and friendlier if you have a job up there you truly have a much much much better lifestyle IMO

kittya · 29/03/2010 23:39

The coast is amazing. Its like that in alot of places. Its job opportunities plain and simple. Although if you were in a government job were the wages are the same, you would be laughing.

CarGirl · 29/03/2010 23:41

kittya don't remind me. We live in Surrey (not a nice part tbh) dh (and I when I worked) got a whole £500 per annum South East living allowance I haven't seen any property under £175k here - and by that I mean 1 bed studio!

kittya · 29/03/2010 23:46

And I bet those terraced housed could still be picked up for less then 50 grand. Its so not fair. I dont know what the answer is. Well, maybe we should all start living in a commune and buy a place between us!!

HerHonesty · 30/03/2010 14:41

i reckon that bloke from the kids centre had clocked it was the secret millionaire. he really seemed to milking it. but yes it was a very poignant programme.

poshtottie · 30/03/2010 20:38

I'm also from Redcar and still have family there.

I left many years ago and haven't been back since 2003 when my father died.

I often look at properties in the area and I could probably buy a large 6 bedroom detached house for what I have here in the south. It is not that cheap though and I don't think you would get a house for £50,000. If you travel further up towards Billingham (Wynards estate) there are some extremely afluent homes. Not sure who buys these houses.

I used to think the houses on the top of Redcar Lane were posh! If you are from Redcar you will know where I mean.

CarGirl · 30/03/2010 22:39

Wynards estate is full of footballers and the like! I'm from Yarm/Eaglescliffe and I have to say equivalent properties are half the price and in a "nicer" area than where I currently live.

BythewayItsBratley · 30/03/2010 23:37

Curiosity has grabbed hold of me and I'm dying to know if I know any of you lot!

I was only watching it at first to see if there was anyone on it that I'd recognise but it really grabbed me. I haven't really given the closure of Corus much thought, 'I don't live round there anymore so it doesn't affect me' kind of attitude but, my god, I didn't realise quite how many people are affected by it.
Its really sad to see the area just breaking down, older generations losing the only jobs they've ever known and younger generations affected by the lack of prospects in the area. What are the options now?
Is there a way to stop the effects taking hold? Or is it too late?

Where was the millionaire living? I didn't recognise it, was it Dormanstown?

I wondered why they didn't show him giving the cheque at the hospice?

poshtottie · 31/03/2010 09:21

Was the hospice in Redcar? I think it used to be the Stead Hospital. My dad died there.

Maybe its a good thing I didn't watch it.

Not sure if anyone is old enough to remember the Top deck nightclub. Highlight of our week.
