clem was a funny one, wasn't he? what was all that about, that he'd had a scottish accent and then woken up with the same one as Egg's dad off This Life? what was the point of the accent change? (or was i not paying attention again, i was chatting to the fonz at the time).

BlackLetterDay · 10/07/2009 23:07

Ooh that vaguely rings a bell UD, I'm sure I would have watched it, would have been 10!, watched all the other CBBC drama type things, Archers Goons etc.

cornsilk · 10/07/2009 23:09

So he doesn't have a personal axe to grind.

Realistically if Jack was sacrificing his only grandson (and also his relationship with his daughter) he would have been a bit more emotional than a few tears.

UnquietDad · 10/07/2009 23:09

Century Falls is brilliant stuff, well worth getting on DVD - and its companion piece Dark Season. Both moody and atmospheric and frightening and funny (well, Dark Season has humour - CF less so) and occasionally silly - much like early 90s Doctor Who would have been!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 10/07/2009 23:10

Oh I see what you mean Fluffy I was a sucker for it now I have children. 10 years ago that plot would not have bothered me half as much.

AitchTwoOh · 10/07/2009 23:10

thought that too, cornsilk.
and scriptwise better if the daughter had kept shouting 'no dad no' rather than just no.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 10/07/2009 23:10

I remember Dark Season... I think

RustyBear · 10/07/2009 23:11

Well, RTD started off in Children's TV - his first TV writing was a children's sci-fi series, Dark Season (which incidentally was also Kate Winslet's first major role)

BlackLetterDay · 10/07/2009 23:11

I'll see if I can download find it on amazon

cornsilk · 10/07/2009 23:11

Lara woman looked more emotional then he did.

UnquietDad · 10/07/2009 23:12

Crossed with you, RustyBear!

Before that he wrote for the Chuckle Brothers. Hence the nod in Torchwood ep. 1 this time....

AitchTwoOh · 10/07/2009 23:12

to me, to you.

UnquietDad · 10/07/2009 23:14

There is a theory that he used to recycle old Chuckle Brothers plots for early Torchwood. There's one about evil garden gnomes which is basically the "fairies" episode from Series 1...

cornsilk · 10/07/2009 23:14

He wrote for the Chuckle Brothers!! The ds's will be so impressed.

AitchTwoOh · 10/07/2009 23:15

well if it works...

RustyBear · 10/07/2009 23:15

From what I can gather about Dark Season there was more than a slight resemblance to both the Demon Headmaster and School Reunion. Of course, RTD didn't write School Reunion, but he does have an editorial hand in most of the episodes.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 10/07/2009 23:17

yes Kate Winslet et al I loved that and had no idea till tonight that RTD was behind it! Want to read the books again now

UnquietDad · 10/07/2009 23:17

There was. I've got it on tape (from the 1994 repeat). Computers, schools, mind control - it's all there.

UnquietDad · 10/07/2009 23:20

If there is a "Demon Headmaster" similarity though it's more with the third series, the one with "Hyperbrain".

Not sure when Gillian Cross wrote the original book of that one. Some of the Demon headmaster books and scripts were written very close together, almost in tandem. So could have been pre-Dark Season, could have been after.

SammyK · 10/07/2009 23:21

That was horrible, still feel sick, physically sick from watching it. I posted on the SN thread last night, tonight was even worse.

I really enjoyed 'gwen' in this 'series'I have to say but the theme involving children was just too stomach churning for me.

Fruitbeard · 10/07/2009 23:23

Well!

Emotionally drained... really, really upsetting but quite brilliant.

Was I the only one who wanted someone to tell that Yank General to fuck off? I'd like to think that if something like that ever happened in real life () that there wouldn't be so much 'we own you' stuff from the USA - especially as the rest of the world was in exactly the same position - what exactly did he/they hope to achieve, it wasn't like they had any good ideas... just felt a little off.

DH made the interesting point that all the hundreds of kids who were involved in the filming are probably too young to be allowed to watch the finished product...

edam · 10/07/2009 23:23

UQD - going back a few posts, I think Sketty is quite nice. Have the impression it is or was a well-off surburb. (Not that I've ever been there personally but from parents/FIL.)

RustyBear · 10/07/2009 23:26

First Demon Headmaster book was mid 80's I think - DS had it passed down to him by his older cousin.

edam · 10/07/2009 23:27

Fruit, that did happen in Doctor Who, RTD did a great 'fuck YOU Mr Yankee President' when the Master became the PM. But in this story, our government were creeps and the Yanks were no better (I thought 456 were talking to all the kids in the world, but appeared the only kids being lined up were British - were ours being taken out first or something?)

RustyBear · 10/07/2009 23:41

There was a mention at one point about what was going on in Germany, but I've forgotten exactly what they said.
