I don't watch the show but 3 friends all emailed me a link to her performance and it blew me away. Moved me to tears and songs rarely do that to me. Such a difficult song to sing as well.

Anyway, DH's cousin (they're in Scotland) just told me to check out her singing cry me a river on youtube. Apparently she recorded it for a local charity years ago and it's been all over there local paper this week.

I've just listened and WOW! Cannot believe the clarity in this woman's voice. So anyone interested just check it out on youtube.

Oh and apparently (so said their local news) ITV have struggled to keep up with the phenomenal amount of interest there's been in her this week.

im torn with being happy that she has been recognised for her talent, she does have a remarkable voice. and being uneasy that she is only a phenomenon because of the way she looks.

had she been a nice slim blonde in trendy clothes no one would have even noticed other than to say, yeah go through to the next stage.

it really is a very sad sad indigtment of society that we are all so shocked that someone who is less than a glamour model can have a talent.

but i do of course, wish her every success

StercusAccidit · 17/04/2009 12:19

I watched it and cackled at the look on simon cowells face.. 'twas as if someone had come up and given him a wedgie.

FAB!!!

rumdontbotherreplyingmum · 17/04/2009 12:22

you got a link to it?

myredcardigan · 17/04/2009 12:23

You see I don't think the looks have much to do with it. Ok, maybe some of the 20 odd million hits on youtube have been people wanting to be amazed that a woman who isn't glamorous can be so talented. But I was blown away by her voice. My friends who emailed me simply said, 'you've got to her this womans amazing voice.

I remember on one of the Andrew LW shows, someone auditioned with that song and he said the range and emotion made it one of the most difficult songs to sing and that only the best of the best should attempt it.

I don't care what she looks like. And frankly and not in the least shocked that someone not slim and blonde can sing. I just think she was breathtaking.

It makes every hair on your body stand up when she starts to sing doesn't it

StercusAccidit · 17/04/2009 12:42

Oh and HA one in the eye to all the face pullers in the audience who soon had their tiny minds blown

thumbwitch · 17/04/2009 12:43

I agree, her voice is phenomenal, regardless of her looks. I was saying to DH as we were watching it, the range required for that song is immense and she was managing it beautifully; and yes, it got me a bit teary-eyed too.

I really hope she goes on a long way, even to win, but I bet she doesn't look like that at the next stage of the comp!

loved her sense of humour as well, and the look on Simon's face!

omg that's fanastic - I'd read the news reports but hadn't heard - the looks on their faces when she started singing

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 12:52

oh god and I love that song as well.

and the Cry me a river is amazing too. Gosh I wish she was a volunteer in our church..........could do with a voice that in our (non-existent) choir

MrsMcCluskey · 17/04/2009 12:53

HEr voice is amazing.
I think it is dreadful that people are so 'shocked' that she can sing because she is 'ugly'
She is not ugly at all, she's just ordinary looking like the rest of the country.
I can just see all the 'makeover ' programmes lining up to get their hands on her.
I hope she doeesn't change, she is very refreshing.
They may as well end the show now, they have found their winner for this year.

myredcardigan · 17/04/2009 12:55

I agree. There's many good even great singers. Just every so often you here someone who makes you go, wow.

OP posts:
FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 12:55

I don't think it's because she's "ugly" - just because - well it's not everyday you here any average Joe Bloggs off the street (and I'm talking day job not looks wise) stand up and be able to sing like that.

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 12:58

think it also goes to show how true it is that you can have all the talent/intelligence/whatever in the world - but if you never get faced with the opportunities to develop them then they can go wasted.

MrsMcCluskey · 17/04/2009 12:59

I wasnt saying that any one above had imlied she was ugly, sorry if it came across like that.
On R5 this morning the discussion was along the lines would you rather be good looking and boring or ugly and talented, whsich i think stemmed from Susan.
Hopefully it will make people think before they judge others by their appearances.

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:03

no I didn't think you meant you thought she was ugly. But it is so easy to judge - the looks of the judges and the audience before she started singing were thinking

"oh god, another "wannabe" housewife that does karaoke"

Just listened again and it sent shivers down my spine (again) and DS1 said "wow that's amazing who is she".

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:04

and as far as the discussion on R5 - ugly and talented would do me just fine

MrsMcCluskey · 17/04/2009 13:08

I have played it on you tube over and over, it is so wonderful!
Just to be good at something would be nice, talented would be amazing!
I am so Mrs Average even down to my bra size!!

cornsilk · 17/04/2009 13:11

I don't really like her voice. I wouldn't choose to listen to it anyway. Obviously she's talented though.
