I don't watch the show but 3 friends all emailed me a link to her performance and it blew me away. Moved me to tears and songs rarely do that to me. Such a difficult song to sing as well.

Anyway, DH's cousin (they're in Scotland) just told me to check out her singing cry me a river on youtube. Apparently she recorded it for a local charity years ago and it's been all over there local paper this week.

I've just listened and WOW! Cannot believe the clarity in this woman's voice. So anyone interested just check it out on youtube.

She's only 47 but looks about 67 on that show. I can't believe they haven't tampered with her to make her look more dowdy than she actually is.

HolyGuacamole · 17/04/2009 14:18

Wow, she is fantastic, I love 'I dreamed a dream', beautiful song. Regardless of her looks, she is just an ordinary person (like us all) and I hope she makes a great success of herself. Most of us can only dream of having natural talent like that and I think it is amazing that she now has the opportunity to share it and follow her dream of being a professional singer

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 14:21

"I can't believe they haven't tampered with her to make her look more dowdy than she actually is. "

I can - but then I know my mum

georgiemum · 17/04/2009 14:25

What a lovely sweet voice, really clear and sharp. I wish I could sing!

Yes, they probably will do some weird makeover on her but isn't that what showbiz is all about?

I am really really happy for her - it seems like she didn't have the chance to try before and now she has. Inspirational for the rest of us who dream and say 'if only'.

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 14:30

oooo blimey - all this talk of talent got me googling the lad that sang at our wedding........he sang as a soloist in the Carnegie Hall on Easter Sunday with John Rutter conducting >>

He's gone a long way since I knew him - playing the part of Yum-Yum in the (all boys) production of the Mikado

poshsinglemum · 17/04/2009 14:32

I just find it sad that she hasn't been discovered before now with that amazing voice. It makes me wonder how much hidden talent lies in Britain's public who just need the confidence to go for it because they don't look like a stereotypical singer. She's great and I think that her story is interesting.

Ronaldinhio · 17/04/2009 14:34

poshsinglemum....are you simon cowell?

jujumaman · 17/04/2009 14:49

LOL Ronaldinho

StercusAccidit · 17/04/2009 14:56

Ok for the more cynical among us could it be they have picked and downsized someone NORMAL to make us all feel instead of worrying about the recession

jujumaman · 17/04/2009 15:00

No way Stercus

myredcardigan · 17/04/2009 17:02

Tish! I think you're a bunch of old cynics.

Why is it hard to believe that she is just who she is? I've seen a few women of her age who have never married, been their mother's carer and basically lived a narrow, sheltered life. My aunt was one of them. They all look remarkably similar.

Anyway, I don't give a toss what she looked like. If she'd been a pretty teenager turning up at an X-Factor audition and signing like that I'd have been equally stunned by the power of her voice. Though I do think part of the amazement is that someone so talented can get to 47 without making a living from that talent.

Thank you myredcardigan. I'm with you on this - it's her voice that blows me away. I could listen to her anytime!

Re: the looks question...hands up, I was totally expecting it to be one of those jeery, piss-take candidates, you know the odd one they chuck in to these programmes for the great braying public to snigger at?

I think the fact that she is ordinary-looking it what makes it so extra special. You don't have to be a 'stunner' to make it!

midlandsmumof4 · 18/04/2009 02:06

She is the female version (visually) of Paul Potts-anyone remember his first appearance on BGT? (although Susan has said she is better looking). Her rendtion of Cry Me A River about 10 years ago was lovely. I could quite imagine her singing the theme to a Bond movie-reminded me of Shirley Bassey

I was reading this morning that she was starved of oxygen at birth and has resulting learning difficulties. I wonder if the judges were aware of that before she came on? I mean, what if she couldn't sing? What ridicule would they have heaped upon her?

I think she's amazing. She's been on the local news most of this week and does seem to look exactly like she did on BGT. She also mentioned that she put on her best dress and shoes for the audition. She has come across as being very polite and totally shocked by all that has happened to her.

Demi Moore has linked her youtube clip to her website and she's been asked to appear on Oprah. She won't need to win BGT or even get through to the next stage. She's done it already. She's broken the States and is apparently talked about constantly out there.

Good for her IMO. I hope she makes millions and she lives happily ever after with pebbles the cat!

ruty · 19/04/2009 19:22

that boy - Shane? - last night was a real natural talent. [dh watches it not me ]

thumbwitch · 19/04/2009 22:29

I loved the sax player as well - he was great. Excellent breath control - I used to "play" the clarinet and was gobsmacked at how long he could keep notes going for!

Was Shane the boy singer? SO glad Simon made him sing a different song - MUCH better.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 19/04/2009 22:51

Apparently, Simon Cowell already knew about her, had heard her sing, and had been going on for weeks about how people would be blown away by her.

It's TV show!

wannaBe · 19/04/2009 22:56

she is a disaster waiting to happen.

She apparently has ld's, she has never been married or in a relationship. She is vulnerable and is about to be catapulted into the public eye, and people think this is a positive thing?

She is a target just waiting to be preyed on.

Just look at the big stars, and look at how they cope with the stresses of stardom. Drugs, mental illness, rehab. And look at the people waiting to take advantage. Family, so-called friends, agents. How much worse is that going to be for someone who is already vulnerable?

I think it's wonderful that she will get the chance to sing. But I think that turning her into a star is really, really wrong.

wannaBe · 19/04/2009 22:59

oh, another one simon cowell already knew about? another fix then.

Oh and the lad from last night already has a career - he's in grampa in my pocket or something? and has apparently appeared in a michael jackson stage show? so not exactly a coincidence that he had another michael jackson track at the ready then?

So this is hardly a show discovering new talent is it, given simon cowell seems to be hand picking the auditionees beforehand... the string quartette from last year had also been invited to audition after they appeared at the xfactor after party.

Remotew · 19/04/2009 23:23

I've read about Susan Boyles ld's etc. I never saw her auditon on BGT last week but couldn't help noticing her in the press so checked it out on Utube. I cried my heart out at her singing 'I dreamed a dream'.

Told DD to watch it and I cried again. Not because she is ugly, which I don't think she is, but because her voice and talent moved me.

I wish her well and hope they don't try to change her look too much, just a little more make up and a nice hair do. She has that scottish accent in her singing. Think Moria Stewart except much better.

ruty · 20/04/2009 09:32
