I don't watch the show but 3 friends all emailed me a link to her performance and it blew me away. Moved me to tears and songs rarely do that to me. Such a difficult song to sing as well.

Anyway, DH's cousin (they're in Scotland) just told me to check out her singing cry me a river on youtube. Apparently she recorded it for a local charity years ago and it's been all over there local paper this week.

I've just listened and WOW! Cannot believe the clarity in this woman's voice. So anyone interested just check it out on youtube.

i thought she was ok on the show but I was shocked by how surprised we all are at the idea that a normal looking person can hold a tune.
Is this what we've come to?
It made me really uncomfortable the way everyone was so surprised.

Also I'm not sure that they are the same person singing in "cry me a river" and "I dreamed a Dream" although perhaps that's because she is also a decent vocal mimic.

Perfectly decent performance totally blown into something else because she doesn't look like Christina or Britney.
How odd we are becoming

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:19

ermm that's a lot more than "holding a tune" - I have lots of good singers at church in my (occasional) choir, including some that have done solos at schools choir competitions - and they're not a patch close to her.

Comewhinewithme · 17/04/2009 13:22

You could see the pound sign glazing over Simon's eyes when she was singing .

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:25

hmmm there's some nice looking fella's in Flawless

MrsMcCluskey · 17/04/2009 13:28

I thought that CWWM, you could almost hear his brain going 'ching ching!'

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:30

The lad in this family I think has got potential once his voice has broken I think - I reckon he's going to be a lovely baritone/tenor

myredcardigan · 17/04/2009 13:32

Everyone I've spoken to about it is just so amazed by her voice not the combo of her voice and looks. Nobody I've spoken to has said 'can you believe she can sing like that'. I also read through some of the youtube comments and very few were worded like that.

I think she does sound different on cry me a river partly because she has such good range and partly because it was 10yrs ago.

she phrases the music very nicely on that youtube clip. She doesn't just belt it out as she does on the BGT. Much better.

TheBolter · 17/04/2009 13:38

Her voice is amazing. Some voices you can just listen to over and over again. For me hers is one of them.

cornsilk · 17/04/2009 13:41

The way she stood suggested to me that she may not be a complete novice. She's extremely confident. Haven't all these so called 'finds' on Simon Cowell's shows really been shipped in for the occasion?

twinsetandpearls · 17/04/2009 13:43

Yes once agaon one of these so called novices isn't what they would seem.

She does have a nice voice though.

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:44

well no she doesn't claim to be a "complete" novice - she sang in choirs and school concerts and then later in clubs............but there's lots of people who sing in clubs that are simply cringe worthy

twinsetandpearls · 17/04/2009 13:45

Fair enough FAQ.

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:45

and no doubt with a voice like that she's been drafted into amateur performances of musicals etc - so by the grand age of 47 (or whatever she is) you're bound to get a bit of confidence (one would hope)

Ronaldinhio · 17/04/2009 13:45

Simon Cowell is a cynical old hag...I think he roughed her up on purpose to shift loads of mawkish cds over Christmas or whatever

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:47

now it's blokes like that one who won the Joseph BBC competition that irk me - he'd been an understudy in the West End before - he WASN'T a novice, he was already a professional (imo) that simply hadn't hit the "top" of his career

cornsilk · 17/04/2009 13:47

Agree Ronaldinho. I bet she arrived wearing Hobbs and Cowell put her into the little number she ended up wearing.

twinsetandpearls · 17/04/2009 13:47

Have to admit Ronaldinhio I think the same.

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:51

oh I don't know about the clothes have a look at this video (there appears to be no sound?) her clothes in that aren't exactly "modern" iykwim.

(although she's tone deaf and admits it so thankfully I'd never have to see her on TV)

Ronaldinhio · 17/04/2009 13:51

wasn't pol pot the dictator also a recording artist before he was discovered... as if by magic?

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 13:54

you know I'd bet the rest of my pack of baccy (and it's p*ssing down with rain so I don't want to go to the shop to replace it ) that she has no formal background in the industry other than what she's stated.

Unlike lee THAT'S HIS NAME - the twat that became Joseph, and Connie Fisher who both had formal experience in the field.

Flo23 · 17/04/2009 13:58

Wonder if she'll be on next time with restyled hair and plucked eyebrows?

I watched it and wondered how long it will be until the story is made into a movie..

Think its fantastic to watch though. Was so delighted that she was able to sing.

jujumaman · 17/04/2009 14:06

I find this whole phenomenon stomach churning

She was patronised beyond belief on Britain's Got Talent. Simon saying: "You're a little minx" or words to that effect. Yeeurch.

IMHO she can sing fine but is nothing extraordinary. Whatever you think of her voice, she is being marketed on the strength of not looking like a singer should is sickening and depressing.
