Am now wishing that they'd gone with the Doctor's Daughter as the new Doctor. If we have to have a child playing the Dr, at any rate!

WilfSell · 03/01/2009 18:48

No but Christopher Ecclestone is the thinking northern woman's crumpet [am one] and Tennant is just, erm, ratty.

Not that this is the most important factor to you geeks. But to me, it's the deciding factor in watch/not watch. Do we know yet? Can't be arsed reading thread.

Tidey · 03/01/2009 18:49

As long as they tidy him up a bit and lose the emo hairdo so he doesn't have to keep flicking it out of the way all the time, I think he could be an interesting choice. My first thought was that he looked like he should be in a band that I've never heard of and that he was far too young, but you never know...

At least it's not a woman. I think that would've been a terrible error.

motherinferior · 03/01/2009 18:51

I liked both. Like Winnie the Pooh with condensed milk and honey.

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 18:51

I'm a thinking Northern woman Wilfsell - and I adore DT - especially when he's talking in his native acccent - mmmmm!

I've a sneaking fear they've cast teendoc because of the floppy hair.....

motherinferior · 03/01/2009 18:52

I'm an unthinking posh southern slapper.

I think the new boy has an interesting bashed-in sort of face. In about 20 years he'll look a bit like Bill Nighy. That can only be a Good Thing.

D'you think he's got a dad ?

KayHarker · 03/01/2009 18:53

Poor sod, though. Damned with faint praise springs to mind, not even the DWF is exploding with joy, everyone is 'Well, Moffat knows what he's doing...'

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 03/01/2009 18:54

Noooo. Find his home address and I'll go straight over with the scissors. That'll sort his fringe out. Ha!

wintera · 03/01/2009 18:55

Russell T Davies is not an idiot. I think his casting choices are always interesting, and he hasn't gone wrong yet. I think this guy has a certain something about him. Just like DT and CE. They all have a certain je ne ce quois as the saying goes.

I thought he was good in both Ruby in the Smoke and Shadow of the North. But I remember him most from an episode of The Street, which he was brilliant in. I am looking forward to seeing what he does with the role.

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 18:56

oooh motherinferior - 'does he have a dad?' - now thats what I call a pressing question....

RustyBear · 03/01/2009 18:56

But was it RTD who cast him? - Stephen Moffatt's in charge now & the first thing he said about him on that Confidential was 'great hair'

motherinferior · 03/01/2009 18:57

Pressing being the operative word.

So to speak.

stitch · 03/01/2009 19:00

mi, lol
rofl

wintera · 03/01/2009 19:01

Surely Russell would have the last say though? I would be surprised if they would go with someone he didn't approve of.

I like floppy hair though! I'm a sucker for it actually! I liked that guy in Heroes who plays Peter Patrelli - Milo Venti-whotsits, until he cut his hair in the second series. Went right off him after that!!

KayHarker · 03/01/2009 19:01

Yes, it was the Moff and the weeping man who cast him. RTD's credentials as a caster mean precisely zero when it comes to this.

I want to like him. I'm willing myself to like him. One day, I am quite sure I will like him.

But right now, he just reminds me of all the snotty students I went to drama college with, who were very deep and into poetry and painted their nails. Which is a bit of a hurdle to overcome, really.

motherinferior · 03/01/2009 19:01

He looks like a vampire. As do both CE and DT.

Again, this can in my book only be a good thing.

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 19:03

My choice of words was deliberate

KayHarker · 03/01/2009 19:06

Oh, he does not. He looks like a drama student pretending to be a vampire.

motherinferior · 03/01/2009 19:07

Sorry, I was being so very puerile that other people's intelligence was going right over my head

Pixel · 03/01/2009 19:07

Dh just rang me from work to say 'who on earth is Matt Smith?' so I googled and found he's been in a couple of things with Billie Piper. Pays to have connections I s'pose .

LackaDAISYcal · 03/01/2009 19:09

erm....who is he? I've never heard of him until now and am wondering why such a young and untried actor in what is one of TV's biggest roles.

Missed the programme unfortunately and have googled but I don't recognise him at all.

And it looks like all the "maybes" out forward by the beeb were just there to throw everyone off the scent. Was he even on any of the published lists?

oggsfrog · 03/01/2009 19:09

I've had a think about this whilst eating my cordon bleu evening meal and have come to a few conclusions;

  • nobody can replace DT. Nobody. Not no way, not no how.

  • I've resolved to begrudgingly give emo-doc a chance - I initially hated the casting of Catherine Tate but I have to admit she grew on me. Somewhat. Eventually.

  • nobody can replace DT. Nobody. Not no way, not no how.
  • I'll be saving up all my spare pennies to buy myself the set of Dr Who's starring DT so I can lust after him admire his superlative acting skills whenever I feel frisky the need.
  • nobody can replace DT. Nobody. Not no way, not no how.

Off now to consume alcohol (it's good for shock don't you know?) and dig out the videos of Ruby in the Smoke and Shadow in the North.

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 03/01/2009 19:09

I'm getting that you don't really like drama students all that much Kay?

Right, I'm off to watch that new vampire thing about to start on tv. Kay, I'll let you know if it includes drama students playing at it.

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 19:10

MI -

paolosgirl · 03/01/2009 19:35

DD (officially Dr Who's biggest fan) has just said "have you seen the new Dr Who" in a tell-me-they-are-joking voice. I said yes, that I wasn't impressed. She then said "yeah, he's not even handsome".

Out of the mouths of babes...
