Hi, anyone seen the first 2 episodes of Apparitions? What did you think? Anyone else thinks it is too gory and a little bit silly?

Ooh I've recorded this to watch. I hoped it might be good. Sort of like an English version of 'Supernatural'? Is it no good then?

Mind you Supernatural got a bit silly and I lost the thread of it in the end. I'm not good with series' that go on and on. My attention wanders.

susue · 21/11/2008 13:20

I've watched them both so won't give the story away! I love Martin Shaw and I think he plays a very believable part in this. Yes it is gory but I don't mind gore and the story I suppose was going to seem far fetched, demons that can affect humans behavior, but I still think the story-line is good and I can't wait till next week again.

InLoveWithSweeneyTodd · 21/11/2008 13:21

oops, I won't give any more details then! By all means watch it and see what you think. I cannot compare it to Supernatural, because I've never seen that one. But I compare it to movie "The exorcist" where the topic was treated a little bit more seriously and I think it was better researched.

Hmm ok, well I'll give it a try. I do love spooky things anyway.

Please do go ahead and discuss it on your thread though InLoveWithSweeney! I'll not peep now!

ingles2 · 21/11/2008 13:25

I love Martin Shaw and watched last week. Tried to watch last night but was on my own in the house and had to turn over after the first 5 mins as it was just too gruesome.

InLoveWithSweeneyTodd · 21/11/2008 13:32

:-) TsarChasm, make sure you come back and tell us what you think. I have discussed it here at work and there are people who love it and people not impressed at all...

It is a load of hokum but none the less watchable for that!

jesuswhatnext · 21/11/2008 16:23

i love 'spooky' stuff, watched last week and started to watch this week, frankly, i just got bored and turned it off, very 'samey' iyswim.

Penthesileia · 21/11/2008 16:26

I've been watching this. Very daft, but very watchable. I heart silly religious horror stuff (like The Exorcist & Stigmata & End of Days - makes me giggle so much).

In its favour, though, it must be said that it is genuinely drama - that is, they clearly didn't have a budget for special effects (barring the gross part which I won't spell out for fear of spoiling it), so the people in it actually have to act. In this respect, I've been quite impressed.

PortBlacksandResident · 21/11/2008 16:41

I'm enjoying it.

InLoveWithSweeneyTodd · 21/11/2008 16:48

I actually thought martin shaw is not at all convincing as a catholic priest, let alone as an exorcist. Can't say why though... it's just not him. IMO the reason why "the exorcist" works and "apparitions" doesn't is the main character: whilst father karras has got a guilty conscience which can be exploited by the demons during the exorcism to make him lose his faith, martin shaw's character is cleaner than clean and you don't see any real inner fight. It's like superman in priest clothes , no real vulnerability.
The other unrealistic thing is how people who are agnostic or atheists readily believe him when he tells his story. In RL, he would have been taken to a police station as primary suspect and accused of child abduction!!

Ports - we also thought the killer had done an exceptionally neat job given the instrument used .

Have to admit I'm quite enjoying it though I think they need to move things along and not just have an 'exorcism of the week'storyline.

TsarChasm · 22/11/2008 00:03

Ok watched now. I quite like it. It's quite restrained in the scary bits. Doesn't get too loud and ott. Didn't find it especially gory. Well, the obvious bit was I suppose, but as a veteran of Silent Witness I am quite resiliant.

Dh lasted about 10 minutes, announced 'It's not exactly Father Ted, is it?' and promptly fell asleep.

I really like this. Martin Shaw is fab.

roundcornvirgin · 07/12/2008 23:46

Anyone still watching this apart from me?

Squitten · 07/12/2008 23:58

I am! Love it - totally silly but that's great!

Curious to see how it will end and where the grand finale will end up. I'm assuming Michael will wig out at some point...

I read an article that said before it was sent out, Apparitions was slammed as being the bloodiest TV drama ever seen! They had to tone it down before they sent it out.

TheChristmasArmadillo · 07/12/2008 23:59

I've just found it on iplayer (well yesterday) and watched the first 4 episodes.

I like it though the 4th was a bit disturbing.

Formulaic in the characters and the ideas behind it but a good take on it imo.

It's scary in a good way.

TheChristmasArmadillo · 08/12/2008 00:01

x-posted.

TBH I liked the restraint when it came to the gore. However they obviously paid alot for that flayed corpse - you could tell by the number of times they showed it

I think Dexter was much gorier - to the 100th degree.

I'm really liking it. Be interesting to see where they take it.

roundcornvirgin · 08/12/2008 00:03

Yes the corpse got a good outing! I like a good exorcism in my weekly TV viewing.

KittyFloss · 08/12/2008 01:10

I really like this series, I love exorcism and catholic stuff for some reason (must be the upbringing) at least it's something a bit different to watch. It is really daft but I enjoy going along with the storyline.

I disagree when you say that Martin Shaws' character is cleaner than clean, shown in the episode when something or other required a virgin and he said he wasn't a virgin. Surely shows some kind of past, which enforces his mad beliefs.

KittyFloss · 08/12/2008 01:19

I did love dexter too btw, I should really order the next book from amazon, but apparently the third? or maybe fourth? features him being possessed by a demon, which is a bit weird. Kind of negates the story so far. but I'm willing to be surprised,

TheChristmasArmadillo · 08/12/2008 09:26

yeah I heard the dexter books go weird around the 3rd one cos the author freaked out and wanted to provide an excuse for dexter's behaviour - which kind of negates the previous books in a way.

I love the catholic and exorcism stuff as well. It's good escapist stuff with enough to leave you a bit jumpy afterwards (or is that just me - I am a big wuss though )

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 11/12/2008 23:46

Please tell me someone is still watching this? I practically wet my pants with fright at the final scene - poor Jacob!
