Hi, anyone seen the first 2 episodes of Apparitions? What did you think? Anyone else thinks it is too gory and a little bit silly?

I am, I am!!

Can't wait for the finale now!

lucysnowe · 12/12/2008 12:46

ooh, Jacob went bananas! am loving this to pieces. Loved the freaky anti-exorcism. And the bit with the pig.

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 12/12/2008 12:54

I was saying to someone it only works because they have played it totally straight, with Jacob as the 'safe' central figure.

I was totally spooked by the bit in the confessional, and that only works that way because you do totally trust Jacob.

I do love a good battle between good and evil, me.

GColdtimer · 18/12/2008 21:22

watching this weeks now but missed last weeks. Can anyone tell me what happened because we are a bit lost. how did father jacob become so, er, lost.

Ta

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 18/12/2008 21:38

Oh arse, I forgot it was on.

Father Jacob performed a black mass I think, which let out from hell the demon who had previously possessed Michael. The possessed Michael then forced Jacob to shoot him, and Jacob was powerless because he'd let the devil get a foothold to his soul by desecrating the mass. I think. And now I'm off to try and catch the last of it

GColdtimer · 18/12/2008 21:43

thanks for taking the time! that helps. hope you catch the rest of it.

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 18/12/2008 22:01

Good gracious me, that was marvellous. Never thought I'd live to see the day when a believing Catholic priest was the good guy and right all along. Good on 'em, I say. I really, really enjoyed that. Nothing like a walking corpse levitation and a shock immolation of Cherie Lunghi to make a good finale.

GColdtimer · 18/12/2008 22:19

Absolutely - they pulled out all the stops at the end didn't they. In the words of my dd "I was a little bit scary" but it was great.

southeastastra · 19/12/2008 08:17

blimey fab wasn't it! and sort of scary in a silly way

lucysnowe · 19/12/2008 09:57

Nun on fire was v. v. scary.

I was a bit disappointed tho - hoped that Michael would be redeemed and for a great big DEMON ARMY but maybe they are saving that for the next series (if there is one).

And the ending conversation with the therapist - if I were an athiest I would definitely be a bit about it...

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 19/12/2008 10:51

I know, that's why I'm a bit to hear that religious believers have complained about it. From my perspective, it seemed like a very sympathetic portrayal of certain forms of religious belief. Nicely ambiguous in places, but still played straight-down-the-line that Father Jacob was right.

But, he wasn't a raving nutter, and his religion was actually, despite the wacky element, a really nice open sort of religion. I wasn't too fussed about the therapist being left like that, though, I didn't like her at all. I mean really, how would stopping the priest praying have actually helped Father Jacob? Her atheism didn't bother me, it was her snotty bossiness.

sparklyxmasfairy · 19/12/2008 10:56

It is fantastically bonkers am I am hooked it helps that MS plays it straight

LoveBeingAMummyKissingSanta · 19/12/2008 11:31

OMG loved this have just finished watching last nights, hope theres another series

Squitten · 19/12/2008 12:32

Loved it - I really hope that they make another series.

I'm Catholic and I have no idea why religious types complained about it - religion won in the end!

I thought the shrink was a demon, particularly when she got thrown unceremoniously out of the church. Brilliant series, I do hope there is another one. Or another series of Judge John Deed for that matter.

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 20/12/2008 17:01

I think the point was that you weren't sure who was an who wasn't, and that anyone, even Jacob himself, could be faked by the devil. Which was something which creeped me out beyond reason...

cornsilk · 20/12/2008 17:14

I thought therapist was a demon type also. Loved this programme.

southeastastra · 20/12/2008 17:15

i thought they may have bought in the therapist as a sort of scully figure

cornsilk · 20/12/2008 17:28

Hmmm yes I could see that as well.

cornsilk · 20/12/2008 17:29

She was incredibly annoying though. Are therapists really like that?

HeadFairy · 20/12/2008 17:32

I really enjoyed this series, scared the crap out of me though, convent education leaves one with a gibbering fear of this sort of thing

I think the Catholic church have been a bit of it because they're trying to distance themselves from the more sensationalist aspects of Catholicism. They don't deny the existence of the devil and demons of course, but they also want to emphasise that the day to day workings of the church are more accessible and less scary than that. I haven't actually spoken to anyone at church about this, I wonder what our priest thinks of it, I bet he watches it.

Martin Shaw is terrible casting though, just too damn sexy to be a priest surely?

cornsilk · 20/12/2008 17:34

That's exactly what I was thinking but didn't like to say! He is a hot older man!

HeadFairy · 20/12/2008 17:39

Oh My God he's gorge! I would have to leave any church he was priest in.... Phwooooar!

Penthesileia · 20/12/2008 17:41

Therapist clearly a demon (or in cahoots with demons) as she knew about the other priest's fantasies and dreams which she said Father Jacob had told her; but obviously Father Jacob is too honourable to have done so - so how did she know? Like that creepy little girl in the confession box.
