There are eerie echoes of the real-life murder of Billie-Jo Jenkins in Lucy Gannon's new three-part ITV1 thriller, when a child is found murdered on the patio of her family home and those that are supposed to care for her come under suspicion. But this is more than just a murder mystery. Gannon casts her net wide to look at how children can get lost in marital break-ups and how moving on to new loves can make adults selfish. Kevin Whately is a headmaster who's dumped his wife (Lesley Sharp) to move in with a younger woman (Geraldine Somerville) and her small daughter. But, caught between his mother's anger and his father's preoccupation with his new family, Whately's teenage son falls through the cracks. As you would expect with the accomplished Gannon at the helm, The Children is a taut, chilling, almost ruthlessly involving story. Told in flashback from the moment the child's body is found, the awfulness of the death is both horribly real and very visceral.

I was really disappointed by the non-ending. Made me wish I hadn't sat through 3 episodes. None of the characters seemed to have any redeeming qualities so ultimately I didn't really care whodunnit. I'll stick to BBC in future.

I assumed the baby's mum did it but what was it with all the "possibilities"? Bizarre.

i think it was the other step mum, emily's dad's new missus, hence her bawling at the end - while her baby cried - presumably trying to make out she had PND or something, I was very disappointed by the ending.

i rushed to the paper to make sure there wasn't another episode, very poor ending

I presumed that they wanted you to think it was the dads partner (with the baby). Was very disappointed in the ending though and I also wished I hadn't sat through all 3 episodes.

Wasn't the mums new partner a tosser? Imagine effing the secretary with everything that was going on!

I thought it was the dad. His new partner crying because she was alone with baby?

oh that makes sense, maybe they should have shown him being taken away in handcuffs then but wasn't his wife saying 'sorry' over and over again.

well if that was the end, it was bollocks! if i was to take a wild guess, i would say emilys mum. the reason for this is, she seemed to be really needy, and hence the awful shot of kev shagging the seceratary part
also all the way through, she didnt seem to have time for her 'baby' eg, the sponsered walk.
i dunno im probably wrong. however maybe just maybe, it was a gang of drugged up charvas who saw the gate was open and fancied robbing the big posh house... then the kid got in the way, so they killed her.....
who knows........ we will never know.
i actually thought it was good, but am gutted that THAT was the ending.

I thought it was an unusual ending, showing how it could have been any one of the suspects and how that would have played out. Then simply ending on the real killer. I thought it was clever. Seems I'm the only one tho!

this was really gripping viewing

i thought it may have been girls stepmum,orpossibly brothers mum(lesley sharpe)

when i watched kevin w kill her, i thought OMG

but as they showed all the adults killing her, the only one they didnt show was step mum who was sobbing at end, holding doll which you see flying through air when girl is killed

though fantastic thriller

Hi, thanks to those who sent kind messages for Sinead. To tell you the truth, I didnt know who did it til the end too. I think that it was definately the dads girlfriend.

That's what I think too. WE all know it wasn't Kevin as he came home after was killed. I also think that Paul knew that Tash killed her because he was not at the sration right away, either that or he was trying to calm her down.
