There are eerie echoes of the real-life murder of Billie-Jo Jenkins in Lucy Gannon's new three-part ITV1 thriller, when a child is found murdered on the patio of her family home and those that are supposed to care for her come under suspicion. But this is more than just a murder mystery. Gannon casts her net wide to look at how children can get lost in marital break-ups and how moving on to new loves can make adults selfish. Kevin Whately is a headmaster who's dumped his wife (Lesley Sharp) to move in with a younger woman (Geraldine Somerville) and her small daughter. But, caught between his mother's anger and his father's preoccupation with his new family, Whately's teenage son falls through the cracks. As you would expect with the accomplished Gannon at the helm, The Children is a taut, chilling, almost ruthlessly involving story. Told in flashback from the moment the child's body is found, the awfulness of the death is both horribly real and very visceral.

Lucy Gannon's taut thriller ends with the unmasking of eight-year-old Emily's killer. It's a slightly woolly conclusion, even though we're left in no doubt as to who hit Emily with such ferocity that she was propelled into a glass door. But the identity of the culprit doesn't really matter because The Children is much more than a whodunnit. In fact, it's one of the best mainstream dramas I've seen all year - tightly written and very well acted (particularly by young Sinead Michael as lonely, manipulative Emily, who does a brilliant job of eliciting both anger and sympathy). After Emily dropped her bombshell last week, she's now driven a wedge between her mother and her mother's new boyfriend (Geraldine Somerville and Kevin Whately). It's Emily's misfortune that she's surrounded by selfish adults forming new relationships. Each refuses to recognise the shortcomings in their own behaviour, so instead they focus on Emily, the scapegoat.

What? So did the baby's mum kill her then? Why?

What a sudden ending.

shinyshoes · 15/09/2008 22:02

So who did it then?

Her dads partner, the one with the new baby?

I'm confused. I even rewound as i was watching thru SKY+. Did the Dad's partner do it, or was this just another scenario to consider?

EightiesChick · 15/09/2008 22:12

I think we are supposed to conclude that it was the dad's new girlfriend (with the new baby) without it coming straight out and saying so. Quite disappointing really - the first episode seemed to signal that it was about dysfunctional families, whereas by the end it seemed to me to get caught up with the idea of itself as a 'whodunit', and it became all about throwing in loose ends and making you think it might have been anyone. That kind of took the focus off Emily and what happened to her.

SlartyBartFast · 15/09/2008 22:14

disappointing. all those reenactments of her death were beginning to be a joke!

lisalou25 · 15/09/2008 22:15

I am glad it is not just me i really don't get that ending it had been so good up untill there but i think it could have been finished so much better

SlartyBartFast · 15/09/2008 22:21

oh but she had the barbie doll that her dad gave her, her dad had had it in the car earlier - though i could be wrong.... and wasnt he late for work at ? 4.30.
i reckon it was her dad which was why girlfriend was crying.

BreeVanDeTramp · 15/09/2008 22:27

what shit ending.

so did the dads gf kill her by addicent or on purpose in a rage

Pablop · 16/09/2008 10:18

grrrrr, i watched last night and was very confused at the end, was it her dad then? Whilst laying in bed, I thought the mumsnetters will know, but you all seem as confused as me.
