There are eerie echoes of the real-life murder of Billie-Jo Jenkins in Lucy Gannon's new three-part ITV1 thriller, when a child is found murdered on the patio of her family home and those that are supposed to care for her come under suspicion. But this is more than just a murder mystery. Gannon casts her net wide to look at how children can get lost in marital break-ups and how moving on to new loves can make adults selfish. Kevin Whately is a headmaster who's dumped his wife (Lesley Sharp) to move in with a younger woman (Geraldine Somerville) and her small daughter. But, caught between his mother's anger and his father's preoccupation with his new family, Whately's teenage son falls through the cracks. As you would expect with the accomplished Gannon at the helm, The Children is a taut, chilling, almost ruthlessly involving story. Told in flashback from the moment the child's body is found, the awfulness of the death is both horribly real and very visceral.

It bugged me that they talked about the Geraldine Somerville character as being "the younger woman" when she's only three years younger than Lesley Sharp

I remember Lesley Sharpe in Rita, Sue and Bob Too in the late '80's and she looked 20 years older back then.

ok I am really odd then. I thought it was irritating shite. The production values were good, the characters were interesting, I thought the boy was acted really well.
But is it really drama to have a whole load of totally disfunctional adults treat their children in what seemed to be a 'lets give a stereotype version of marriage break up where the adults behave in every dumb fuck way you can think of'.
The actions of each of the parents were almost designed to be as child damaging as possible. It was just unbelieveable.

I am sure there are really bad selfish disinterested parents out there. But to portray these self obsessed and apparently oblivious adults as supposedly average caring parents .
And Keving whately snogging. Seriously no.

I felt so sorry for the teenage boy.His parents just could not see that they were to blame for his behaviour.
