Am I the only one who thinks wtf is this & degrading towards women?

This 100%. I was so disappointed with the last series although the bit where Danaerys addresses the Dothraki and the dragon opens its wings behind her so she really does look like the Dragon Queen was quite impressive.

Maybe don't talk about the later seasons of a series on a thread started by someone who hasn't watched them yet??

Normally I would agree but those aren’t major spoilers and in any case it’s the risk when starting a show so long after it’s release (it has happened to me before!)

It's just really unnecessary

Game of Thrones, both the books and the HBO series, are my absolute favourite entertainment ‘things’ in the world. I watching them on repeat and I have read them so many times I could probably write it from memory.

I’m also a woman. No, I don’t find it degrading to women because it’s fantasy. There are millions of books, films and series that have characters or plot lines that could be considered degrading but they’re make believe! There are also several very very strong female characters in GOT. I adore it and one day I will go on Mastermind with it as my specialised subject!

I tried watching it when it came out but I always skip sexual violence and violence in general so there were a lot of episodes where I was watching the opening and end credits and hardly anything in between! I gave up before the end of season 1, there’s so many things to watch/read there’s no point in wasting time on something that you really don’t like.

Me too. So I haven't even tried GoT which seems a shame, but....

I’m with you OP. I couldn’t watch it. Makes me sick to my stomach to think of the pathetic male writers just dreaming up the fantasy rape scenes - disgusting.

Unlike, I don’t know? Martina Cole? Have you read the lady killers? Both fiction, both featuring violence against women.

Cynical me thinks the excessive sex was to get viewers when it started but then they realised that it was actually good enough without it they stopped bothering.

It is brutal and violent, but loads of shows are.

I guess that worked for lots. I don't think I got past the first episode - it was just vile for no reason that I could see.

Atschjvkbgj · 06/08/2026 09:11

It’s bloody brilliant with some very strong female characters, much more so than the males I thought

You need to watch it to see, that’s the point, some fantastic story arcs such as Theon, Sansa and Arya and very strong female leads

latetothefisting · 06/08/2026 21:49

Perhaps watch a knight of the seven kingdoms (GOT prequel/spin off) if you want to get a feel of the 'world' without so much VAWG? To be fair there is still a lot of fighty swordy type violence in that but the only gratuitous nudity is male.

BauhausOfEliott · 06/08/2026 22:11

IwanttoWFH · 03/08/2026 13:50

I’m also starting out and thought the same! Really violent and lots of unnecessary sex scenes. I’m now halfway through season two. I don’t think it’s getting any less violent. Still scenes of rape/attempted rape etc. Hoping it’ll tail off.

If you don’t like violence, then Game of Thrones is not the show for you.

It’s grimdark fantasy. Unflinching violence is pretty key to the whole genre. Watching Game of Thrones and complaining that it’s too violent is a bit like watching Star Wars and complaining it’s got to many space ships.

permanently · 06/08/2026 22:20

I have just finished the last book. I take my hat off to the script writers who created such a fantastic series (with at least a resolution) out of a shorten supply of source material. Can’t remember an excessive amount of shaggin, but once your ‘a maiden, flowered’ you definitely need to watch your back.

BEAchDays2 · 07/08/2026 08:06

Hard no for me, I can’t tolerate any sexual violence in programs.

Epoisses · 07/08/2026 08:18

I loved it. Watched it 3 times.
Brienne is the best!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 07/08/2026 12:31

It starts really badly. The misogyny seems extreme. If you can get past the first few eps, though, it really does become more about female empowerment and in the end, I bloody loved it.

Atschjvkbgj · 07/08/2026 13:15

Spoilers !!!

The most odious male characters - Joffrey, Littlefinger, Ramsey etc all meet their fates at the hands of women.

Princejoffyjaffur · 07/08/2026 13:21

there's some good bits, but it's a bit shit, really, when viewed as a whole.

DollopOfFun · 07/08/2026 13:31

It wasn't nicknamed Tits and Dragons for nowt

LadyEnemy · 07/08/2026 13:41

The women start off downtrodden, but they don’t end that way! I can’t even think of that many rape scenes tbh, of course there are some, but they are a part of the story. I would say most of the sex scenes are consensual.

But I also liked the ending actually >>>>>>>> runs from thread

OttersOnAPlane · 07/08/2026 13:48

There are so many amazing female characters but yes, ample brutality as well. The last two series are extremely disappointing, but overall it telks some exceptional and engaging stories across the vast arcs.

maddiemookins16mum · 07/08/2026 14:34

The women really do win in the end, one in particular. Stick with it.

KaleidoscopeSmile · 07/08/2026 15:21

I gave up when (1) they killed off Sean Bean and (2) I realised that there were another 999 episodes to go.
