Am I the only one who thinks wtf is this & degrading towards women?

The first series is horrendous for unnecessary sex scenes…

… but they tone it down and it gets REALLY good.

I promise.

Series 1-6 were excellent

series 7 poor

series 8 was diabolical and the end was farcical

Whoops75 · 03/08/2026 13:46

Stick with it.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 03/08/2026 13:46

It’s not like that all the way through. The women characters certainly get their revenge.

Yes, the ending was rushed.

But it was still one of the greatest television programs I’ve seen.

IwanttoWFH · 03/08/2026 13:50

I’m also starting out and thought the same! Really violent and lots of unnecessary sex scenes. I’m now halfway through season two. I don’t think it’s getting any less violent. Still scenes of rape/attempted rape etc. Hoping it’ll tail off.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 03/08/2026 13:57

Cynical me thinks the excessive sex was to get viewers when it started but then they realised that it was actually good enough without it they stopped bothering.

It is brutal and violent, but loads of shows are.

latetothefisting · 03/08/2026 14:04

I love it but wouldn't agree that the unnecessary sex and nudity is toned down that much in later seasons tbh. It was joked about as tits and dragons for a reason!

Maybe less sexposition in Littlefinger's brothel but the nudity and threat of violence, including sexual violence towards women carries on pretty much throughout (series 5 and 6 with Ramsey and Littlefinger and the walk of atonement for example - trying to avoid spoilers).

On one hand the middle ages (which it is a fantasy replication of) were violent and women were treated badly in many ways.

However, on the other hand Westeros does seem to be even less feminist (for lack of a better word) than the 'real world' at that time - things like GRRM killing off so many female characters in childbirth (yes it was a danger but nowhere like the extent he represents it!), no representations of non-upper class women in positions of power (e.g. female craftswomen or members of guilds or the equivalents of nunneries), minimisation of the role religion played in people's lives which would have protected women to some extent, etc.

He's also very gung-ho about dealing out SA towards his female characters but it's hardly ever/never mentioned in relation to any of the male ones - in reality a war/army environment or somewhere like the Wall would have been rife with it.

It was something the series was criticised for even when it aired, and it's unsurprising that 15 years later, post me-too etc. it's off-putting. In fairness the spin off series seem to have learned from it and the SV isn't as gratuitous imho.

If it bothers you more than any enjoyment you are getting I wouldn't force yourself to watch it OP.

eveningprimrose74 · 03/08/2026 15:14

So its definately worth sticking with it.

I signed up for a years on Now TV in order to watch Sopranos & Game Of Thrones,
I gave up today & watched Ann Droid instead 😁
Sick day x

I think I might be giving up on it.

Series 1 was quite slow to get going

Anarchy99 · 03/08/2026 17:29

Some of the sex scenes in S1 are questionable but the overall premise of the show is actually about women taking power.

If you can’t get past the issue though, just give up. No point in wasting all that time if you aren’t into it

If you enjoy Ann Droid then GoT may be a bit heavy going!

Plus season 8 is universally agreed to be crap (and after watching 7 previous seasons, a bit of a cop out)

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/08/2026 18:08

I enjoyed the books and couldn’t get on with the show

LaurieFairyCake · 03/08/2026 18:37

Really struggled with series 1. It got a lot better

RedRiverShore6 · 03/08/2026 19:42

If you are struggling I would give up with it, I enjoyed it but struggled with The Sopranos and gave up on that.

I would probably watch Heated Rivalry instead

Specialagentblond · 03/08/2026 20:59

Season 1 requires effort but after that, you’re sucked in.

blanketsnuggler · 03/08/2026 21:07

I've just returned from visiting Dubrovnik and feel compelled now to give GoT a go. But I can't find it anywhere? How can I watch it (for free?)

NoraLuka · 03/08/2026 21:10

I tried watching it when it came out but I always skip sexual violence and violence in general so there were a lot of episodes where I was watching the opening and end credits and hardly anything in between! I gave up before the end of season 1, there’s so many things to watch/read there’s no point in wasting time on something that you really don’t like.

You can’t watch it for free. You can subscribe to NOW or HBO or buy the DVDs.

2016 called, it wants its discourse back.

This 100%. I was so disappointed with the last series although the bit where Danaerys addresses the Dothraki and the dragon opens its wings behind her so she really does look like the Dragon Queen was quite impressive.

PuppyMonkey · 04/08/2026 22:22

You know nothin’ OP. GrinWink

oatsotoga · 05/08/2026 00:24

Im with you OP, I didn't watch at the time for this exact reason.

minimuffs2651 · 05/08/2026 00:33

It's made to be shocking esp at the beginning. They try to balance it out by having powerful women too (so to "please everyone" sort of thing). But if it's not for you, it's not for you! I do think shows are unecessarily violent these days. Even kids ones. And if you've seen video games lately...
