Anyone else finding the Graham Norton and Madonna interview uncomfortable?

OMG this Graham Norton / Madonna thing is embarrassing. Anyone else feeling like it's just uncomfortable and almost scripted.

There was something odd about the atmosphere, though hard to pinpoint. As someone else said, it was almost dystopian, and Kylie briefly dispelled that! So many awkward silences, and something oppressive about the room they were in?! I guess we are more used to seeing Graham Norton make seemingly easy connections with interviewees and being so buoyant, but he seemed unusually awkward here. I can’t work out whether that was all down to Madonna being inscrutable, or something else, but it all added up to being an uncomfortable watch.

Didn't know this was on but I always find her an awful interviewee. Takes herself so seriously and appears to have no sense of humour. I'll watch on catch-up to see if anything has changed.

I didn’t find her to be humourless but think perhaps her humour is very dry? I did find the interview uncomfortable though.

I think she came across as someone who’s not very happy. She’s had a great life but I’m not sure she has much personal happiness despite her multi millions. She spoke about her daughter being openly resentful of her. Graham and Kylie were so positive towards her and she gave nothing back and was openly rude, calling GN a time waster and a teenager , he looked really embarrassed for a split second but handled it well. She seemed really happy when she was married to Guy Ritchie and looked the best she ever had, she was ageing gracefully then but since he left she has reverted to the tried and tested overly sexualised image. It’s not shocking anymore it’s just tired and a bit sad. We’ve seen it all before and she could have done so much more. The new material, singing about being free when she’s dancing she was doing 40 years ago (Into the Groove). It’s like she has nothing more to offer. I’m disappointed she didn’t reinvent herself by growing old more naturally if she really wanted to empower women by showing it’s ok to age, we are all ageing, we are still valid, but instead she has given into the pressure and ruined her face, it doesn't even look like her. When you see the old footage her face was beautiful and had so much character and now she’s like all the other Hollywood waxworks. She seems to want to be 25 forever. And I used to love her but I feel a bit disappointed and just sad for her now. I like others was also rooting for her to evolve.

As women, we’re conditioned to be like Kylie: bubbly, cute, friendly. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Kylie. But that’s just how it was back in the day, when I was growing up.
Part of me admires Madonna for being the antithesis of that. She didn’t give a fuck about keeping GN sweet or giving him an easy ride 😄

There’s a piece in today’s papers about how her daughter - Lourdes - is harbouring some strong issues against her.
You don’t have to think to hard about that!

That’s interesting I was wondering if she was a grandmother yet. About 10 years ago she was kicking off in the press because her teenage son had decided to move to the UK to live with his Dad Guy Richie. I wonder how the children she adopted are doing now.

She rarely gave interviews but when she did she always had everyone on eggshells and was sneery like a mean girl ready to insult. I remember the ‘In bed with Madonna’ film and she was cold and scary throughout.

So why give an interview? She certainly doesn't need Graham Norton to advance her career. She can remain humourless and difficult in total privacy.

It will have been promotional maybe organised by her record company or management, i think she thinks "difficult" is her brand.

Lomonald · 30/06/2026 09:17

Oh i had had to turn it off it was excruciating, Graham Norton is a total pro.

Sounds like she brings that dismissive attitude to her personal relationships as well - and look where that has got her with her own children.

I think she is emotionally stunted and stuck at a moody, vain, teenage girl stage.

Her physical image was / is everything to her - she must be absolutely devastated how her face has turned out over the past few years - that would wreck her already fragile ego.

DJPJ · 30/06/2026 09:53

I’m not sure it showed GN in a bad light. Madonna would have known he said she was difficult and rude and she probs did the interview to punish him and make him squirm - but his sycophantic shtick may have been deliberate in allowing her to be herself - which just highlighted her dullness, meanness and preposterous vanity - so maybe GN got what he needed and Madonna what she wanted but inadvertently she was exposed. So well done Graham!

Why not do it? I agree that it wasn’t worth a watch, but that’s the viewer’s choice I guess!

Because it clearly wasn't in any way enjoyable for her, and she wasn't in a position of needing to promote something, like the vast majority of GN's guests, other than some safe old stagers who regularly return to the sofa to be reliably funny or draw out more uptight celebrities?

She is bringing out a new Album this week and tbf to her she is all about self premotion, I don't think she would have been particularly forced to do the interview.

Lomonald · 30/06/2026 12:42

Oh dear me, I meant Promotion obviously 🙄 😀

susiedaisy1912 · 30/06/2026 21:29

Watching it now and I don’t think it’s too bad. She’s always taken her career very seriously and why not she was a trend setter in her day. I also think she’s got a dry sense of humour. I mean she’s probably used to getting her own way and people pussy footing around her for years so I guess she’s a bit of a diva. Reminds me of Joan Collins watching how she conducts herself.

Actually, yes. She's very like Joan Collins in that way!

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 03/07/2026 18:49

I'm surprised she did it really. It would have worked better if to offset the frozen look she'd been more engaging personality wise, as she can be, from old YouTube uploads I've seen.

I think people used to be slightly in awe and fawning to the mean girl sneery types back in the day - now with more understanding of psychology we know that these types are deeply insecure and emotionally unsophisticated and deserve a swerve socially.

I think we’ve regressed to worshipping mean men while insisting women always be kinder than kind.

Personally I prefer allowing dominent women to be themselves instead of trying to neuter them into pretending they’re everyone’s BFF.
